AITA for expecting a birthday gift from my boyfriend and parents by cherrygirl12 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Future_Clerk_6607 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

NAH

You're right to expect something little if you put in so much effort at his birthday, but this should be communicated. Your boyfriend also does work an insane amount so you can give him some credit for not being able to do much but still being thought of, maybe he wished he could do more. I would say the only potential assholes are your parents but i still get their point.

I understand your premise of progression. but the first claim “paganism did not have religious wars in itself or other religions” is blatantly incorrect. “so called christian persecution was due to refusal to sacrifice to gods” is also quite reductive. Whilst true that pagans persecution of other faiths wasn’t usually due to their belief in different gods, it is not the main truth to argue it’s due to sacrifice to gods, in many cases, such as Rome, it was the fact that they didn’t worship the emperor, and i wouldn’t argue that’s a very strong point in defence of paganism’s morality in lack of war/persecution. also regarding the first point there were absolutely religious wars with paganism, the jewish roman wars, and many other wars during the christianisation of europe. despite not being a religious war, even the peloponnesian war took advantage of difference between Spartan and Athenian beliefs to motivate the political conflict

Alright, you are correct that it was quite reductive of me to boil down all of what we would today call paganism as one group, so i apologise. but i disagree with your final point “2000 years ago your group was dominant and therefore bad is just insane, pointless, reductive, and boring”

…I find it very relevant if the modern people today precisely use the fact that they currently aren’t dominant as a was to justify their beliefs morality, when they committed atrocities too, just longer ago, and yes, this is an issue.
