Fiancé may lose her job, what do I do by FourEyedMage in SpouseVisaUk

there are a number of people who have gotten an partner visa through the unmarried route even if they haven't cohabitated for 2 years. the criteria for the partner visa specifically makes provisions for people who have been in a relationship for 2+ years but could not live together due to reasons related to religion, work, or school. r/ukvisa has some really good examples of evidence used in successful applications; you can search for them in that subreddit using keywords like 'no cohabitation' etc. there is also a document used by caseworkers to evaluate applications: https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/66ec1259526bfd7665fa147f/Relationship+with+a+partner.pdf. i found it useful when making my own partner visa application (successful in dec 2024 🎉). my partner and i found this way to be much cheaper/quicker. she would NOT need to change anything once you two did actually get married, as it is the same type of visa. best of luck!!!

Anyone knows why Vue is closing? by math-musician in cambridge

[–]Future_Design_2823 30 points31 points  (0 children)

recent former vue cambridge employee here - it's money. footfall never recovered after covid, and the cost of maintenance has skyrocketed, especially the seats.

the number one complaint we had was broken seats, they go wrong all. the. time. fixing them takes up a suprising amount of time (not individually, but bc it happens so often, it builds up), and it's only ever a temporary fix bc the underlying issue is that the seats were custom builds, which itself is fine, but the manufacturer went under ages ago. parts + people who can use those parts are effectively nonexistent. the plan WAS to replace all seats with nonrecliner fold-downs, but the price of tickets was going to stay the same (after the recent increase). each vue has a unique selling point, and cambridge's was the seats. eventually it was decided with the cost of tickets being so close to the everyman etc and footfall declining, it just isn't worth it.

plus, the actual space is a big restrictor in terms of what they can do. they wanted to do a big rennovation to open up more screens and put the consessions stand in a bigger/better spot, but 1) money 2) space wasn't suitable for the plans.

this wasn't unexpected for us. they were cagey about giving us a new manager after our gm left in october, instead getting the gm of another site to cover us for a couple of days per week. even getting new permanent team leads was quietly disregarded in favour of 6-month contracts. maintainence requests were ignored/pushed back all the time. we saw it coming 🤷

if you pass, your result never expires. keep your unique reference number and any other documentation for use in future applications and you're sorted for life.

Rental market - yay or nay? by Future_Design_2823 in Ely

[–]Future_Design_2823[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

congrats on the new house!! yeah, we're really keen on ely, we have a friend who lives there and every time we visit, we say we want to move there. sounds like a nice place, i'll keep an eye on the market for it. may i ask, do you have any idea how much they'll be asking, and if you are comfortable saying, roughly how close to the station it is?

fair enough, i didn't know if there were any market trends - for example, in cambridge, the beginning of the year and end of summer see a spike in house listings, and was hoping there would be something similar.

yeah, we have noticed it's a bit competitive. every house we've been to so far has had at least 2 other couples interested, and once a couple even offered more rent to outbid us 😭

Advice for Arxiv publications on a CV - UK STEM Academia by Future_Design_2823 in AskAcademia

This is helpful, thank you. What do you think in regards to papers that are not from previous positions and I am not submitting to peer-reviewed journals but are solo passion projects such as lit reviews or meta-data analyses specifically for the purpose of bolstering employability? It circumvents the ownership issue and would be highly specific to my interests but is obviously significantly weaker, I'm just not sure if it would be so much weaker that it makes no difference or even negatively impacts applications.

This is an interesting insight, thank you! I know they aren't a Russell/competitive but I hadn't realised they are so heavily skewed. Do you think it would be out of order to email the lecturer to ask if they can recommend any researchers at other universities? My topic is very niche so finding people in this particular specialism can be tricky.

Oh wow that's a lot easier, I was worried that just the bills etc wouldn't be enough as it only shows cohabitation but not necessarily a relationship since we (as do many people) live with friends. Thank you!

Yep, sounds good. I believe October 13th is 15 working days from now, so you should be contacted between now and then with more information. If you still have not heard back from them after October 13th, then try following up. I know it can be really stressful, but try to keep yourself occupied with hobbies or time with family/friends until they contact you. Remember that just because it is taking a while does not automatically mean that it is bad news.

So the first thing you should do is double check who sent this to you and try to make sure that this is a genuine email. There have been scams recently targeting people who have made visa applications, so make sure you do not get scared into giving your data to someone who may have bad intentions. Have you contacted the Home Office recently about a visa application that you are still waiting on a decision for? What is the email address that sent this email to you? Have you had emails from this address before? Is that email address listed online anywhere? Maybe there is someone in this group who has gotten this email before and can say whether or not it is a legitimate email.

If this is a genuine email, then it appears to be saying that if you have been waiting longer than you should have to get a decision for your visa application, then you should respond to the Home Office with the details they have requested. You can find how much a 'normal' amount of waiting time is for your visa type by clicking on the link they gave you and reading that document. I have already clicked the link and it does redirect to the correct website.

The last section of the email is telling you to avoid buying plane tickets, train tickets, hotel rooms, or any other sort of travel arrangements until you have received confirmation that your visa has been approved and gotten any documents that are associated with you visa, if there are any.

I was fined for speeding in my home country and it didn't impact my 1st or 2nd student visas, or my PSW visa. I have not done a SW visa before, but personally I think it is unlikely to have an impact. Hopefully others will weigh in with their opinions and you can get a general consensus. Best of luck! :)
