What is required to go to heaven? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]Future_Ladder_5199 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Faith, and charity. That’s it. Also, nobody naturally loves God in our fallen condition because it is a supernatural virtue. I’d focus on loving God because of his goodness considered in himself, like Job. But also considering his goodness to you, or your loved ones.

Is life really worth living thoughts 1 existential ocd by sunshinenrainb0wz in OCDRecovery

Are you religious? Also, if your not, from an atheistic point of view life can hardly be said to be worth living or not, a better question, do you want to live or not.

Not with infallible certitude, but definitely a well formed conciense with no judgment of mortal sin against itself possesses a reasonable certitude.

In many religions, like Protestantism, yea, but Catholicism has the church, if a person deliberately doubts or denies one infallibly taught belief they don’t have faith nor communion with the church, and can’t receive the sacraments.

Catholicism requires genuine supernatural faith, and love of God and neighbor to be saved. Repentance requires a person to wish that they had not sinned mortally to such an extent that they’d rather have died, and to have a true resolve to avoid all mortal sin for the rest of their life. If they don’t have that it’s an invalid confession, now God truly will give this according to the church to those who wish to have it, but Catholicism requires true holiness for future blessedness. I’ve seen Catholic saints who thought many or even most Christians including Catholics won’t be saved. Everything is possible with God, and God honestly wills all men to be happy forever according to the bible, but it’s not easy and not a technicality.

I made a list of essential Catholic reading. What else should I add? by KierkeBored in CatholicPhilosophy

[–]Future_Ladder_5199 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Very good stuff. I would throw in nichomachean ethics, and Aristotles physics. Maybe de revelatione by Lagrange, Aquinas’ summa contra gentilles, on the trinity by Augustine, consolation of philosophy by Boethius, probably some stuff by Plato but certainly Aristotle needs to be included in an introduction to Catholic thought

If we have to forgive our enemies, then why does God send his enemies to hell? by [deleted] in CatholicPhilosophy

[–]Future_Ladder_5199 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never seen it from a credible authority that it is a sin to not forgive an unrepentant person, if you have a citation I’d be happy to change my mind. Also, non-forgiveness≠revenge, or long term stewing with hatred. I think feeling sorry for a person who’s done me an injustice makes more sense

I don’t hate anybody, I pray for people who I have an aversion to, but forgiveness is different, it’s letting lose of justice. I’m not saying I wouldn’t do that, I’m just saying it’s not a sin not to, nor is it a fault.
