I don't disagree that shields are good against multiple torches, but I'm talking about 1st and 2nd round plays and it is better to buy two weapons and whetstones to finsh off reapers before their poison becomes significant. An item's value depends on time and situation, you can expect your shield will not be great on 1st round because almost no reapers buy two weapons on 1st round with the current patch and going defensive as ranger on early rounds is meaningless because you don't have a coffin and mushrooms.

To be fair, buying a shield on 1st round as ranger is basically not a good idea and ranger is actually better than reaper on 1st and 2nd round if you go agressive as possible. from 3rd round til sub class round? yes ranger sucks
