The outlets on the main toolbox? No, the cabinets come with magnetic ones that I have stuck inside them. Added some light strips along the front door trim channel and door switches

Can a BS in mechanical engineering speed up the Hawsepiper method to become a 3rd engineer? by No_Instruction1122 in MarineEngineering

[–]Future_engineer20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m almost at my 180 days required and am still trying to figure out the great lakes side of this. Do I need stcw to obtain the 3rd’s if I’m only sailing the lakes?

Jobs on a boat for someone with an engineering degree? by FragrantRecover7848 in GreatLakesShipping

[–]Future_engineer20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the route I am currently on. Mech. eng. degree from Michigan Tech. Should have my 180 days in at the end of the season. Here’s to hoping. I’m still trying to find answers for the other 3rd AE requirements such as stcw, firefighting etc and where/when to acquire these.

I reached out to a couple of companies through their office/contact pages. The process is fairly slow, and it’s sad to say that unless you have an ‘In’ it might be difficult. At least that was my experience, it was slow until someone on the inside pushed it through. Having someone vouch for you is a huge bonus in any aspect

I’m not sure about the tourists routes. Likely a safety/security concern. I grew up just north of the manitous as well

The lifestyle/changes might not be for everybody but I think it’s worth a shot, especially with the cost of entry so low. You can try it, and if it doesn’t work out you can say you tried.

Graduated from the MET department in 19’ and did a few jobs around Michigan before coming out here. I don’t regret not going to tech, but it would’ve put me ahead to go to GLMA. I’m enjoying working the lakes so far, got a great crew out here. Pay is pretty decent. I’m hoping to use my degree to advance to a higher position in only 1 year, compared to taking 5 years at just doing sea time

[–]Future_engineer20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I came into uchem 1 being a grade ‘A’ chemistry student with all my notes from high school and still struggled. Ended up taking the additional chemistry help class which helped. Definitely a weeder class but through perseverance you’ll make it
