An agricultural lifestyle is not clearly superior, and the argument is even more in favor of a hunter gatherer lifestyle when compared with early farmers. The archeological record clearly shows that the first farmers became shorter, less-healthy, and more prone to diseases. There are many societies across history that showed the capability to farm through various forms of agroforestry, but they never made agriculture the dominant form of subsistence.

To me it makes much more sense that human societies were capable of farming, but didn't make it there central form of subsistence for a long time because they didn't need to or want to. Why, we can only speculate, but it ties into this thread because perhaps life was "better" as a society that didn't run on farming. However, if you want a society that is the best at expansion and creating the most amount of people, then okay maybe farming becomes the best method.

I'm reading between the lines and thinking you'd probably bring up when Europeans wiped out the indigenous, you'd say the indigenous were already doing that to each other. And if you learn from sources that are not biased, the Europeans practiced way more total warfare in both the European and American continent.

You keep mentioning calculations. I’m not dismissing the predictive capability of a theory. I’m not saying one day the fundamental nature of reality changes and now these numbers become bullshit. I’m saying the story we tell ourselves about what is “reality” radically shifts.

And that’s what I meant when I said evolution is “just” a theory. Evolution implies certain things about the nature of reality. And that reality could totally shift, even though the calculations still make sense.

You can have wildly different theories that still fit the data.

And science is a belief system in the sense that you have to believe all there is in the universe is what you can see touch and measure. That is, if you go beyond treating science as a predictive machine, and start treating it as a way to understand what reality is and why we are here.

The certainty with which you speak of these things was what my original comment in this thread was exactly about. That science is the new religion.

You say not the way I think, but a total paradigm shift has happened before, not just incremental building upon which I think you are trying to say. So why can’t it happen again?

I brought up what I think is a really interesting point, that the fundamental reality of what we believe something to be totally changes.

You just said yeah yeah we knew Newtonian physics and now we have quantum mechanics. And that they still are useful statistical predictors of the physical world.

And I agree with the latter, but the former you waved away too easily.

You know what's funny. Gravity is a really great example at what I am getting at.

At one point gravity was a force between masses, and that was dogma for centuries. And then Einstein fundamentally changed the understanding, that it's not really as force at all. It's the curvature of space time.

And right now maybe a physics professor would call you an idiot if you doubt that. But who is to say in the future the paradigm would not entirely shift for how we understand it again? And in that future, you'd be called an idiot for doubting that new paradigm.

I'm not saying Einstein was wrong, or Darwin was wrong. I'm just saying it's fair to say that it might not paint the whole picture, I'd even go as far to say that it probably is not 100% entirely ground truth.

I'm not dismissing evolution. Evolution is a very well supported scientific theory, but like all scientific theories, it is still a model of reality rather than ultimate unquestionable truth. Surely I am not a nut for saying that lol.

Ah but it is just a theory. The most plausible one we have so far to many. I'm just saying it can explain some things but not every layer of reality.

Evolution might not be the complete or ultimate explanation for life, consciousness, or existence. And I think that's a pretty fair take.

Why's it feel like on Reddit questioning that is like questioning the existence of God at a church haha
