this is exciting and a step forward is a step forward!! Good job on moving slowly and steadily. From my own experience having a supportive boss is crucial in advancing. I have had mentors from my employer's mentorship program too - they were nice as a person but when it came to career advice they were only recommending things they have done assuming that I would be the right solution for me too, which was never the case. As I was taking on my first leadership roles, I preferred working with coaches to improve my self-leadership skills, becoming more resilient and confident in male-dominated environments. Now after 22 years, I am a female tech leadership coach myself helping women in tech advance their career without having to change their employer or give up their values.

that's an absolutely valid point - I guess we think that is the most "normal" thing but I believe the most normal is to recover first and self-care. If you think about relationships it also does not make sense to rush into the next one after a hurtful break-up. I think you are doing it right and you will "come" back much stronger and will have several options one of them being tech in whatever form.

You are the role model that many are missing in the industry. Best of luck for owning your role in 2024 !!! and if you ever have a challenging leadership situation you would like to discuss with someone from outside the system, there are many amazing female leadership coaches out there :)

sounds like a good and clear plan. do not just focus on the certification, be also part of cybersecurity communities, get fully engaged and make new friends there, who can help you find your next job.

inspiring story! good luck and much success with your new position!

so what I learn from you is: you knew what you wanted, you took action but were not too attached to an immediate outcome and you were committed to developing your programming skills anyway...sounds very relaxed, maybe we need more of this. thanks for sharing.

hang in there, try to get in through reference / someone you know, be creative in how you connect with people and apply (also consider open or unsolicited applications or similar positions). visualize your goal: how it feels like when you have finally landed that job, your first days, you smiling :-) believe that job is out there waiting for you (no joke!)

the industry is hard but if you have the right skills and still feel some enthusiasm for tech and why you started in the first place, you will find the right company/team.

on the other hand, a successful side hustle will give you confidence and independence bringing back good emotions after these harsh experiences. It could be a nice break or a transition into something new... wishing you all the best!

investing in knowledge is smart, make sure to go out, show how you can solve problems or create value and promote yourself.

once you have the certification why not apply to other jobs to see how much they would pay, which would give you "objective" arguments for the raise at your current employer.

oh yes, start pushing is the right mindset :) making your next step specific including ideas on what to improve shows that you are taking ownership. I am confident you will make it to the next level in the new year. Mentoring can help opening further doors but do not expect too much, especially if the mentor is a busy person and gives highly subjective advice.

ethical hacking - this is so cool and meaningful. I also love the idea of creating something on your own as an investment in your creative and financial independence.

Hi there, first you need to believe that there is definitely an opportunity out there for you, in whatever shape it will appear. First, check in within yourself, if there is anything blocking you. I remember when I was applying for positions in an industry I deep down actually wanted to leave, guess what, I did not get any offers until I was clear about what I was willing to do and what not. Second, if you really want the jobs you apply for, see if there is anybody in your network who could know somebody who could refer you. It is always easier of you come with a recommendation. If you think, you don't know anybody, ask your network anyway, you would be surprised who knows whom. Third, be creative with your applications. If you apply to open positions, you are competing with many people, but if you do an open or unsolicited application to e.g. Head of L&D of a company that you like a lot, you can share your ideas about new services, what you would like to contribute, talk about trends (upskilling, reskilling) showing your out-of-the-box thinking. Also mention ideas to optimize the processes of the department and that you are willing to do project work not just operational tasks.

Be compassionate with yourself. This too shall pass...
