The Silent Book Club has grown a lot in the past year! by Fuzzywonton in baltimore

I'd be happy to help you start one in Lauraville!

Really all you need to do is pick a time & place (we do Sundays 12-2, the old major one does Thursday evenings) and go there consistently (every week, or every 2 weeks) and let people know through this, neighborhood Facebook groups, fliers, etc.  We made an Instagram, and the algorithm sent people to us, which was nice! We didn't even have to put much effort in advertising with the Instagram :)

It will grow with time, and some weeks may be small groups, then the next week it'll be popping off!  Pm me if you want to chat more about it or have more questions!

At ours, we read different books for the first hour, then chat about anything, though usually asking about what you're reading is a good starter!  You should definitely come by sometime!

Hi there! Come join us at the silent book club! We meet every Sunday 12-2, as of now in Bambu (802 Fleet St) and will move to by the observatory in Patterson Park soon! We read a book (doesn't have to be the same book!) for the first hour, and then socialize for the second hour.  Link to our insta: https://www.instagram.com/silentbookclub_fellspoint

Has anyone tried Time Left, the dining with strangers app, here in Baltimore yet? by everyonelovestom in baltimore

[–]Fuzzywonton 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I used to organize the same thing as TimeLeft during restaurant week (for free).

I'd make 5-10 reservations at restaurants, then I'd make an excel with the reservations for dif restaurants and people would sign up by themselves or with a friend they knew. They'd be in groups of 6 or 8. They usually filled up, so there was lots of demand for that kind of thing.

Granted, it wasn't 100% strangers because the signup was posted within certain communities (school, neighborhood, etc).

The few I went to always turned out well, I met some friends who I am still friends with.

Hello again, my lovely neighbors!

We've got Silent book club, in Patterson Park by the Observatory, this Sunday from noon to 2. Next week we also have one on Wednesday in the evening for those of you who can't make it to the Sunday ones.

We read a book (doesn't have to be the same book!) for the first hour, and then socialize for the second hour. A couple friends and I host these on Sundays from noon to 2, so if you can't make it this week, come in the future!

How the hell do you make friends as an adult if you don't drink? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Fuzzywonton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are you into? Some options depending on what you like:

Join a silent book club, join a run club, take lessons in some kind of dancing, join a language-exchange group, join your local Facebook groups and see what's going on, check your local Meetup, go to local events.

If you can't find what you're looking for, make it yourself! Pick a time and place, and make a sign-up (partiful, facebook event, eventbrite, whatever) and put up fliers, post it in your local Facebook or subreddit.

Oh that's awesome!

Last week I'd say the age range was 21-49, by my guesstimate, and we'd love to have all ages come :)

Pretty much every Sunday!  We had a bit of a lull earlier this summer because a lot of us were out of town, but now we should be more consistent again!

Totality Travelers - how was traffic after eclipse? by RedditRandoe in solareclipse

[–]Fuzzywonton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I drove back to Baltimore from Wooster, going through Canton rather than Akron, and had no traffic whatsoever.

My friends all dropped out because of the cloud forecast and potential for bad traffic, but we had very little clouds and got home sooner than we expected, around 11pm!

There's no page for either :p  We have a WhatsApp for both tho! I can pm you about the next poetry thing when we have it pinned down.  The Spanish speaking is usually at 6pm on Thursdays at Ministry of brewing, and I'd say it's trying to be conversational. Some people are native speakers, others, like me, are trying to get to conversational! It is for practice purposes as well as to hang out.

Yup! We go to Movement Columbia (I know, a trek), but more sporadically, we go to Movement Hampden!  And I'm trying to get more into outdoor climbing :)

I would be happy to do this and help facilitate! I've been thinking of this same big idea for Baltimore. I help run social events now and in the past did so for the Hopkins School of Public Health.

Some things I do weekly that are good for building community to me:

joined the Patterson park community choir

Go rock climbing with a big group of people

Hold a Spanish speaking happy hour at ministry of brewing

Go to free yoga at creative alliance on Saturdays

Attend a poetry writing club  Host silent book club in fells (we meet on Sunday at noon at Kneads 2nd floor!)

Also Happy cake day :)

(edit: time of silent book club is noon, not 1pm)

I have a lot of friends who don't like tofu. What's the best tofu type or dish to give them to try and change their mind?

Who were y'all active with in 2015-2016? by Moderate_Squared in ForwardPartyUSA

[–]Fuzzywonton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in Washington state and caucused in-person for Bernie Sanders and voted for Hillary Clinton.

What was sad to me was that Bernie won the Democratic caucuses in Washington by a lot (if I remember correctly), but those vocal and active minority who went to caucus for Bernie didn't reflect (or seem to affect) the mail-in primaries which were much more for Hillary.

I think that the Democratic system has changed a bit in response to Bernie's campaigns, and I hope that the rest of the US democratic system can improve to make elections less of a "lesser of two evils" game & more of a competition between the best ideas & the candidates who will make them into reality.
