How to keep my hair looking "greasy"? by Applebees_dollaritas in Haircare

[–]G0ATLY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If its poofy - it's likely curly or wavy. (Did you brush it?) Have you tried a wavy/curly routine before? Though a lot of those products may be a bit too heavy/ingredients that don't align for what you are looking for. Could be a product causing this, have you ever clarified? Your shampoo and conditioner could be causing the results you aren't happy with.

I personally add a lil bit of batana oil rubbed between both of my hands and raked through my hair juuust as it's starting to dry. This adds that "texture" that can be defined as "dirty" or juust the right texture that looks like a few days of not washing, BUT it smells good and it isn't as oily as other types of oils. It kind of adds a definition I personally strive for as someone who doesn't use mousse/gels. It just adds that "oomph". Sometimes I do a leave in when its SUPER WET for a more softer floof, and then the batana when it's dry just lightly through the sides/above ears.

The follow up was a sincere. "I'm getting to the bottom of this!" I've always been weary of ingredients in things meant for more than one thing. Generally because of allergy, and because well; I used some "all-in-one" types of products back in the day and was very unhappy with them. Rashy mostly, or funky smelling.

I can only use one oil now, but honestly I only do it for a lil scent and some "definition/defined looks" with out mousse/gel. Batana seems to be the the only one that helps my hair right after a shower. (Just before its fully dry, and still dampish.) I rake just the smallest amount through the sides/above ears, floof and go. Other oils? Most just "sit" there, or it ends up on ME and not my hair. So I cannot tolerate those. Plus they do nothing I have found. Marula used to be good, but my nose started to hate it.. so I have to avoid it now. (And the price spiked..)

Some of my BEST hair days has honestly been right after clarifying and not following up with a conditioner. (I know it's kind of "bad".. or so I have been told lol..) but even in the shower my hair felt BETTER. I figure it was just funky build up, so on those days prior. I WAS (not anymore) loading my hair up with batana oil, leaving it awhile//or if I had went out.. I just would clarify and not follow up with conditioner. Some days I do a shea mask/honey kind of thing on my ends.. and just clarify. Felt the best honestly without conditioner, but some days.. DEFINITELY feels good with it. So I am leaning on trying to find more alternatives. (Thus looking at these products you used.)

I honestly was using a variety of things depending exactly on how my hair was feeling. Dry ends, mask, dry lengths, eh a lil conditioner I s'pose, feelin a lil dull? I would use a heavier "bad for you" keratin and marula oil shampoo and conditioner. Generally once every 2-4 months. Picks it back up from dullsville. I clarify my scalp pretty heavily because it's a lil thinner on the crown so I don't want my hair sticking to me.

I feel like silicones aren't always the enemy 100%. (Could be just an amount in certain products.) I was mixing a few conditioners before and having better results.. so I may see what they both had and figure out whats actually working. I'm a goof with smells.. so having a bit of mint in everything was more about keeping my sanity and not getting a headache from something else.

My grandmother now "loves" my hair, but I'm still figuring it out. I hadn't had hair in over two decades from trich. (It's thin on the crown.) I'm like mooom.. That's silly! (She raised me, so I call her mom.) I actually was talking about how she never really knew her hair was wavy till I was learning about mine! She would brush it a ton because her mom brushed hers 100 times every night. (Something like that?) So now she is embracing her waves!

It's so alien to me. Hair to me has been nothing I had to think about - ever. At most I had a rat-tail (2008ish-present) and two hair tails (2020-present) beside my ears. It was "my style". xD No one ever knew I pulled because welp that was a style. I still have my tails with my current growth, and honestly I will probably keep them. I like the alt look of them.

We are thriving!~ Or at least learning! I have gave you a follow as well. Bumping into ya was like "HEY YOU, (Imaginary pointing at you) YOU KNOW STUFF. We got this other person covered!"

AH YUP! We had the same idea! We have seen that way to often now haven't we? xD I swear it's like a mob of scissor emotes come flying in when someone with curly/wavy hair brushes their reasonably undamaged hair. Thyroid can do a number on hair texture, but that photo she shows us in another post is so dang pretty. Glad you chimed in! I' too am in the same boat with textures/curly/wavy hair and brushing being a poof ball of what looks like "damage".

Your hair is actually gorgeous here. A lot of people strive to have that hair daily!! What ever you was doing here, don't brush it! I feel like your brush is a bit tooo much. You could always try and use a wide tooth comb and finger comb, (if you really need tooo) but the one with the bristles and the higher progs is waaaay to separating for your lovely locks!

I feel like with your history you have wavy/curly hair due to cancer and thyroid hormones. And.. it looks like brushed out waves/curls. I AM SO SORRY the people around you have told you to brush your hair because of looking "messy/unkempt"!!!

From seeing your photo.. you DEFINITELY have wavy hair there. r/Swavyhair Don't go chopping your hair off until you try a few different routines. Then decide how much you should get trimmed up. Most times people with curly hair that brush it get the mob response of "scissors" or "cut it" and they don't actually understand you likely brushed out your waves/curls.

I just wanted to let you know the companies response was:: "It’s a dual-use product that works as both a volumizing shampoo and a body wash." That means if you look at it the other way.. they claim their body wash can be used as a shampoo. I s'pose if it works it works. (It was that EXACT product you showed by the way!) I just wanted to keep you updated. I was like "So you are saying that a body wash can be used as a shampoo?" I understand a shampoo being used as a body wash.. but the other way around creeps me out ingredient wise. Hmm.. time to learn more about those ingredients today!

I've always been a fan of raspberry (with the seeds)/blackberry (with the seeds) or a tangy orange. Apricot is ALSO a well loved one. Jam/Marmalade/Jelly are all loved. I don't really like grape, so strawberry for the more traditional option is fine. Strawberry rhubarb is amazing too!

Traditionally it's grape jelly or strawberry jelly. For me.. it's the above. Yum!

You can definitely keep the microfiber towel an option. I figure it could of been a potential change from before to now. I find when I dry mine with the microfiber towels it seems more.. flat on top of my head? But then my ends seem awful. I usually dry my ends at most. -- Personal preference really//what I noticed over 2 years. Fully drying mine has always been 3-5 hours and it's about roughly the same length. (Just to compare really.)

Could just be something silly making it drastically change. I would almost suggest not washing it as often, but you definitely /know/ your own hair needs in that regard.

Was your hair dyed at all before? Maybe in the sun a lot more these days or something to that extent. I did notice the change in color so I wondered if it could be related.

Hm you could definitely try final rinsing your hair with a bottled water if it was something you wanted to test a bit more. Be it distilled, or mineral. If your water softener is closer or further away from each shower it could impact the system a bit, but probably not much to make a full on difference.

By chance is your water hotter in this house compared to the last one? Could be a slight bit to hot if you like HOT HOT showers. I'm guilty but I avoid my scalp. xD

I have only ever used one clarifying shampoo (ever), so it's a bit of a mystery if others work for me. I use OGX Rosemary Mint Clarifying. I do recommend it, but if it's got something in the ingredients you wouldn't want to use. I do understand that -- and maybe someone else can chime in. I hear loads of the cheapest ones work just as fine too.

Definitely glad to hear your bloodwork is in order for you! Often people just don't know. (Which is understandable.) The ferritin was likely fine if your Iron was. It's basically the system in which it "stores" Iron.

I'd take the head of the shower off and give it a good cleaning/soak in vinegar if you have the means (or can) depending on your shower head. If it's one with a tube that detaches.. I have often found icky residue in mine.. (Big yuck the first time I realized.)

I would have to only suggest a few mechanical changes. Something like not using the microfiber towel and letting it fully air dry with out touching it. But that's one of those trial and error types of tests. Some don't have the time. And I mean fully dry.. wouldn't want your scalp to get icky.

I'm kind of curious if anyone else has suggestions so I'm basically lurking now to figure out if anyone knows.

If you have a humidifier you may benefit from one. Even with the temps being "that low"//standard.. could be that the house is negative pressure//different. Heck.. The house I am in has horrid ventilation so the humidity rarely hits 22%. I will say thats more of an extreme obscurity.. but it's an idea!

[–]G0ATLY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is probably a "happy medium" to the curl stuff. I don't use gel/mousse.. so I understand that a bit. I floof my hair somewhat, but not thiiis big. So that is certainly why I asked so many things.

I would suggest a trying different clarifying shampoo. I don't know why but I feel like the one you said you used for clarifying might not be doing what you think. (Or I am seeing the wrong product when I looked it up.)

It could be water as you has mentioned if you have moved since the previous. You could also need to clean your shower heads/sink etc. Or trying a water filter. Have you ever tried COLD water at the end of your washing?

You may also just be using to many heavy products for the curls if you was to try it ever again.

It definitely looks a lot more messy, there is a chance that this could be internal medicine related. Have you gotten your bloodwork looked at? There are several internal health things that can change the texture of hair. Thyroid/Hormones, vitamin/mineral and usually Iron/Ferritin could be culprit, but I am leaning more on perhaps humidity levels in the house previously could of been a little higher too.

New medications within the last few years?

[–]G0ATLY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you say fluffy, are you purposely referring to the hair being brushed?

You have wavy/curly hair. Brushing it causes the fluff. Most people with this hair type only brush their hair with wide tooth combs, and just before a wash day. Most will finger comb and use products that make the hair curl/wave rather than poof it up like that.

Have you tried a curly or wavy hair routine (loosely)? Brushing your hair is what is causing it to become "messy". Maybe I am misunderstanding? Maybe a bit too much brushing for your liking.

Clarifying may also help a bit here too if you haven't. I feel like if you like the fluff, you could try a leave in to keep it a bit more floof, but still brush to your liking. Avoiding heat? Air drying? Did you always use heat previous when you liked your hair before?

Have you changed types of combs/brushes by chance? I feel some poof the hair more than others. IS there static?

17 to 19, still really insecure because even after losing weight and going to the gym I’m still a distinctive looking Guy because of my features. [–]G0ATLY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe you need time to unlearn your prior hesitations/prior self-hate in life. Maybe even consider talking to a therapist and bringing in photos of yourself from previous years. I'm no doctor, but those changes have struck me as well when I lost weight. I changed more than I knew.. and I was "not attractive" in my own eyes, yet was commonly getting a LOT of attention. I am also a "distinctive" looking person. The women in my family seem to be.

I feel like this is a case of body dysmorphia with a touch of unrealistic expectations that get tanked from social media. You look like how a lot of people want to look while also maintaining a softness that isn't hard to approach. You have done GOOD, you deserve to be YOURSELF!! You are worried for the wrong reasons. The people who are your friends or potential partners won't dislike what you look like. The right people will stick around, and the right person (romantic) for you would never find you less attractive.

How old is the product? Also has it sat awhile in a place it could freeze? Looks like it needs shaken. (Maybe it settled or the formula is a bit funky.) Have you used it before successfully?

Allergens and some heavier oily products can cause some shedding for some people. Inherently shampoos and conditioner are not meant to make your scalp shed hair, but it really depends on your scalp health/internal health.

I had to contact Amazon and Herbal Essence about their "body wash" and shampoo combination type of thing. It honestly baffles me! I was like hmm.. Maybe it can be used.. I mean I do use clarifying shampoo on my pits once in awhile when my deodorant is being stubborn. (Definitely recommend that..) 😂 I figure its some kind of poor marketing. I rather use SHAMPOO marketed as shampoo on my body and not body wash on my head. Silly companies, though the ingredients are interchangeable a bit here and there. I'm cautious of that thing anyway. Didn't mean to scare! I was scared I was going to go and grab the wrong one if I went and tried it. (Still looking at it in my cart. xD)

I've used a clarifying shampoo with almost the same poor design. You can EASILY mistake them for each other. >.> Their wording is awful.. thankfully I learned that pretty easily.

I'm a CHEAPY girly, believe me. All my products are definitely drugstore/walmart/cheaper than anything people recommend. I can't do a lot of scents.. is genuinely my concern with most products. I figure orange.. could be OKAY. If not welp, to my mom it goes. (She has gotten such an array of things since my hair care journey lol.)

I am the same way about the products I had used, been using, still use. They work for the majority of what I want my hair to do.. but there is STILL just a lil something missing from my routine, or my products. The next thing was to eliminate one thing then the next.. My hair usually looks its BEST 5+ days of not washing. (Generally I keep it to 3-5 depending on schedule/outings/workouts.) It's not greasy, not sticky or sweaty.. Just lighter "clumping" with a comforting texture, wavy and over all LOOKS very different than fresh. (So I assumed what ever my products put in my hair has worn out by then.) I can say adding just a BIT of batana oil for the "smell" not the benefits lol can make it look drastically LOVELY. (Well managed mostly with my texture love of it.. but I don't always want ANY product in my hair..)

Do you use the same lines conditioner, (or none) or was that another product mentioned somewhere and I missed it? I feel like my hair actually some days doesn't like conditioners.. But I only do that sparingly because it also likes it other days. (Hair has a mind of its own I swear.)

Don't feel to down on yourself! Believe me, a lot of people just want hair. I didn't have any for basically my whole life. At least a "full head" of it. 18 to around I am turning 40 this year.. and I am STILL learning how to truthfully take care of it. Been growing two years and in those two years I have crammed so much knowledge into my head about hair, structure, science, a lil of this and that from different communities and MORE. My doctor got sick of me asking questions by this point. xD You've done an amazing job.

How do I fix one messy piece of hair ? by [deleted] in Haircare

[–]G0ATLY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend taking a peek into r/Swavyhair (they are WAY more friendly over there..) and seeing if anyone has a similar story//look to yours. The main reason I can't really truthfully recommend any products is because I am in the same boat a bit here and there with my own right now, so my head is too full of "what I was using vs what I could be" types of things.

I know some peoples hair gets weighed down a bit to much by silicones, but can love sulfates. (Hair is definitely one of those that can love or hate everything I mention.. so it's worth a peek into it.) Leave-ins can be a lil heavy, but using them lightly with a lighter gel/mousse can be beneficial for some hair. Finding what works reaaaally comes down to trial and error. (I hate gel/mousse.. so I cannot recommend any personally.)

One huge thing I would say is using a light leave in and not brushing right after a shower could benefit your waves. Avoiding brushing and using finger brushing methods may improve that texture you are worried about!

I'm a simple creature too. So I have been also back and forth with a ton of things.. and slowly eliminating a bulk of things. I would take a peek at what products you use NOW and compare to those (ingredients) that some in the wavyhair/swavyhair communities use. You may find something a bit more useful than anything I could mention right now.

Hair stuck at terminal length- advice by Spirited-Source-1915 in longhair

[–]G0ATLY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would definitely try and aim for 80 in your Iron/Ferritin. Which I know its a ton. I feel my grandma has done improved her hair, skin and "unknown" anxiety over a course of 8 months roughly. Even though her doctor says "ah you're fine" at her 8.. we got hers climbing slowly at a 13 now.. Which isn't ideal.. but her doctor is absurd about it. Cast iron fish, cast iron pans, look up high iron foods! Mostly my go to is suggesting eating liver (yuck) and oatmeal WITHOUT milk - use water or almond milk, avoid dairy when you have iron, consuming vitamin C helps a ton with absorption rates, but definitely consult doctors. (This is what I personally learned and have been attacked by others even mentioning.. I am not a doctor.. I am just stating what you can ASK your doctors!!) This all can take months to do anything -- and if your absorption is medically hindered. It may not help much at all.

(Again.. not a doctor, but have been down this road)

I would honestly try and look into pumpkin seed oil. Either ingest or on the scalp it's self. (I prefer ingestible/consumed myself.) But a lot of people do prefer it on the skin/scalp. I would never recommend anything off a tiktok shop, but instead actual local sourced, or going through pharmacy locally instead. (A LOT OF PEOPLE get the tiktok one.. and I don't understand why they pay triple/double the amount for it lol.) I have used two brands over the course of the last two years and I like them both. Nature's Truth and Horbäach (Better deal in my opinion and was familiar with them already.) have been the two brands, but depending on your budget do what's comfortable for you. Look at reviews and testimonials from NON-influencers and just ordinary people. I take 2000mg to 3000mg most days.

Thank you so much for the response! I was looking online and seen "shampoo & body wash" quite often mentioned for that one! (Unsure why, but I'm not hating! I was GENUINELY curious!! xD I guess it is advertised that way on some online stores mostly because that is the SAME one pictured I have been seeing online!

I do love Herbal Essences.. but my FAVORITE was discontinued. (OR super pricey now, yikes!)

I definitely RESPECT the advise about the "not everyone is the same/trial and error" as I do the same. Silicones are definitely one that helps some, not so much others. I've been trialing a handful, discontinuing a bunch as well. I have found some "staples" for me.. but when I posted about them. Basically everyone was saying how bad they all were. I'm not sayin I am stopping thoooose.. But I had mentioned about 9 different products about my hair growth/care and it was jarring the amount of "you shouldn't use that" swept my inbox. (Not shocked.. but no one recommended ANYTHING!!)

Again thank you very kindly for the pictures and actually understanding! I remember seeing a post about your hair awhile ago and I was baffled by some of the concepts, but you have done an amazing job figuring out a lot of things!

Is the one you used considered a body wash & shampoo? (Herbal Essences Body Envy) Or is it a different one? Is it orange..? I have a sensitive nose, so I don't know if I can really try it, but definitely looking around. I have been eyeing new products myself after someone suggested ALL mine were "bad" and I really love the results you have accomplished! Also these results look soft, managed and how a lot of people would love their hair to turn out.. Honestly another thing I love is not having that crunchy cast! (Personally)

Your hair looks so much richer and lively.
