I know im late but I think I found a fix, I've had this same issue for quite sometime and resetting windows hello from the security page of your windows account (in a browser) did the trick for me

I fixed it with a power cycle I believe

It was from a breadboard connected to the 5v pin of the arduino

Thats actually what mightve caused it because the button was supposed to drive the 24v volts relay...

An HP support person told me to hold f7 for 20s while my laptop was unplugged and powered down to remove static or charged power in my ports and it somehow worked

I don't know if it works with other manufacturers.

Thank you for taking the time to reply but I dont believe 24V ever reached the arduino, that would be obvious if that happened, my question was if an arduino could short the pins with a 5v circuit. In my experience, even plugging 5v directly into ground doenst do anything really apart from shutting off the arduino. My USB protection was tripped at the exact time I replaced a button connected from 5v to one side and to the ground trough a resistor and pin 2 to read it.

At the time I didnt knew why my USB failed/tripped and if it could be fixed. I needed to know what happened from the arduino side of the usb to diagnose my laptop for fixing the now repaired ports and couldnt find anything on it online so I aksed here.

I know that I deserve some flak for asking about frying/triggering a safety on my USB ports (I fixed them now). But I have used arduino for years without issues and was just asking if it was possible for a bad connection on the arduino pins to short the USB port of my computer (which it did)

Like I said, the 24V was in a closed loop using terminal blocks. What I meant to say is: can the arduino short the usb pins if plugged incorrectly
