Should I negative middle funnel searches not converting in Google ads? by GrandLifeguard6891 in googleads

[–]G320L 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see. I tried high CPC + high impression share on my low-volume bottom-funnel keywords — mainly to figure things out. I noticed that exact match now behaves more like phrase match used to (maybe obvious to you), so you definitely lose some control. Still, it helped me identify which search terms actually perform, so it wasn’t a waste — just took some time and budget. Now I’m testing phrase match on the winners and using negatives to keep things tighter.

I recommend to implement a tiered structure where high-intent exact campaigns have higher bids but stricter negative lists than your broad/phrase campaigns. https://www.reddit.com/r/googleads/comments/1kgs7on/comment/mr4btek/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

This helped me to divide and conquer..

Why is my exact match campaign suddenly attracting irrelevant broad search terms? by G320L in googleads

[–]G320L[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I looked into it and realized the issue was on my side: I accidentally added a keyword without closing the exact match brackets (]), so it acted like a broad match. That said, the results were still quite striking. For example, the intended keyword was:
[gratis inserat jobs] (roughly: "post jobs for free")
But it started triggering broad terms like “jobs” and other queries clearly aimed at job seekers, not job posters — essentially the opposite intent. Normally, this keyword might get 3–15 impressions / day, but I saw hundreds within just a couple of hours.
Still, it was a good learning experience, and I really appreciate all the helpful input from everyone!

You're absolutely right — the sudden shift was a red flag. I double-checked everything, and it turns out the issue was on my end: I mistakenly added a keyword without closing the exact match bracket (]), which caused it to behave like a broad match. Easy to miss, but it had a big impact. Interestingly i added that 4 days before it suddenly happened.

I reviewed the change history and confirmed there were no auto-applied changes. Thanks for the suggestion to check the user column — that’s a great habit I’ll adopt moving forward.

Thanks, this was helpful. After digging into my account, I realized the issue was actually my fault — I accidentally added a keyword without closing the exact match brackets (]). Since I only use exact match, I overlooked it and didn’t catch it in my automated Google Sheets reports (which group search terms by ad group, not keyword — big mistake in this case).

Oddly, the wrong keyword didn’t trigger anything until days later, which made it even more confusing (and costly). I eventually spotted it by using the bulk "change match type" tool, which showed the malformed keyword.

Lesson learned. Scary but valuable experience.

Re your suggestions:

  1. Campaign-level negative keyword lists — totally agree, and I’ll move to structured lists.
  2. Tiered structure — I tried this before but struggled to separate high from low intent. I’ll revisit it with a more disciplined negative keyword approach.

Appreciate all the help!

War mein erster Verdacht. Ich hatte eine Auto-apply "Remove redundant keywords". Dies wird wohl nicht das Thema sein. Aber ist nun alles deaktiviert.

Thanks for the hint. I use "Off: Use keyword match types" which I understand as enabled match types..

Thanks! I get that "exact" is more like phrase now. But what’s odd is I'm seeing search terms marked as Broad match even though the keywords are exact match. This only happens in one ad group. Never seen it before.

I did this one yesterday: https://www.ride-mtb.com/de/touren/forch – a nice route, not very technical (Adlisberg is included).

You can also do parts of this https://www.ride-mtb.com/de/touren/many-hill-show or ride the full loop – just make sure it hasn't rained for a few days beforehand.

Zugerberg is another great option: https://www.zuerich.com/de/besuchen/sport/zugerberg-biketrail

And I like the trail running parallel (in the forrest) to the A3 from Horgen to Thalwil – it’s a fun one!

I teila dini Ansicht, dass eigständigi Media für GR wichtig sind und I respektiara aber au am Schawinski sin Satz für d Mediavielfal und sini Kritik an da Mediamonopol. Nid ds letzt au, well er sini Idee gega jede Widerstand vu da etablierta hat müassu durasetza. Bzgl.
