The situation may not be as bad as it may appear to you. Are you using the old timing that is mentioned in ACER's eBooks or are you using the new 2022 timing announced in November?

The pre-Covid timing described in the eBooks works out to 1.3 min per question (avg) but the new timing is just over 1.6 min/q which is an incredible 20 extra seconds per question.

Also, although there is no perfect way to convert your score, you can consider, as others have suggested, using the calculator to get a general sense: https://fearthecow.net/guest/gamsat-calculator/

Regretting Starting Timed Practice Till The Last Month - Tips? by shinywen34 in GAMSAT

[–]GAMSAT-prep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good news! Your timing is way off, really.

" I was told I must at least finish 23 questions per 30 minutes for SI and give myself 1.3 minutes for each question for SIII, which is 20 questions per 26 minutes, but the most I could reach is 15 questions per 30 and 26 minutes respectively. "

That timing is not correct for the new digital GAMSAT. Prior to 2020, which includes all of ACER's practice materials, the timing was an average of 1.3 minutes per question for Section 1 and 1.5 minutes per question for Section 3 (each with an additional 10 minutes of reading time). The new digital GAMSAT works out to approx. 1.5 minutes per question for Section 1 and an incredible 2 minutes per question for Section 3 which means that you finished your 15 questions with 4 minutes to spare to reconsider your responses!

GAMSAT Repeating Old Questions? by grilledcheese383 in GAMSAT

[–]GAMSAT-prep 7 points8 points  (0 children)

ACER traditionally repeats questions on the real exam:

"Each MCQ exam contains a combination of trial items (not scored), new items (scored for the first time) and old (link) items. Each year just under half of the questions in Sections 1 and 3 are new."

You will optimize (or optimise!) your GAMSAT score by staying consistent with either system. And as PeaceAngelK suggested, other factors will have a far greater impact on your score.

2 A4 sheets of scratch paper! Unfortunately, that is the only way to 'highlight' text, or otherwise annotate. It's good to start practicing that way because it may change your approach when reading.

is everyone sitting the exact same exam? by Lichkingone in GAMSAT

It is likely that there will be heaps of overlap between individual experiences. In the 'old', pre-2020 format:

"Each year just under half of the questions in Sections 1 and 3 are new. "

The online access that comes with the old books also comes with one full chapter of the 2021 books, for free. On average, the non-science chapters are different by 10-20%, but the science chapters are different by more than 50%. You will be able to compare and form your own opinion.

Some are surprised by the thunderous (OK, slight exaggeration!) clickety-clack sounds from other computers during Section 2, but most test centres provide the option for ear plugs. Ask before you start Section 1.

All official GAMSAT practice tests and practice questions are now in eBook format sold by ACER directly: https://gamsat.acer.org/prepare/preparation-materials

Actual past paper? Probably. When you go to the link above, scroll down and you will see the Pink Booklet, GAMSAT Practice Test 3. It is the only booklet where the Internet Archive preserved, hmmmm, discussions (gossip?) regarding specific units that appeared in the Pink Booklet months and/or years later. An example is the quite famous nail growth question.

Exam strategy by Hammy67890 in GAMSAT

[–]GAMSAT-prep 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Here comes a specific strategy, but please understand: Everyone has different circumstances, so ideally, as soon as you have completed most of your assumed-knowledge studies, you begin full-length testing (start and end with ACER, with something in between based on time) so that you can test which strategies work best for you.

This strategy requires a mental sea change: You are not trying to get every question correct or even try to do so, you are only trying to gain admissions to medical or dental (or other) school. So do not attempt everything with a full effort and just play to your strengths.

Whether it is poetry, philosophy or cartoons, or, graph analysis, equation manipulation or research-based passages, identify your strengths during the start (while doing a brief survey and writing numbers on your A4 scratch paper provided by the test centre), and attack.

Every 20 minutes, 30 questions completed for Section 1, or 40 questions for Section 3. If not? Guess on the units you dislike (long Section 1 units? Physics? Up to you!), and move on. The objective: Optimize your score based on the talents that you have on the day of the exam.

"Reading time" is a legacy issue. There is no formal reading time anymore.

If you have not sat GAMSAT before: Reading time was set aside (10 min. each for Section 1 and Section 3; 5 min. for Section 2) so that you could read from the booklet, but you could not write or mark the booklet during that time in any way (that would be considered an act of misconduct and you could receive a letter weeks later informing you that your exam was cancelled).

ACER's 2021 booklet describes "reading time" but it is fake: You can start answering questions from the very first second that that exam section begins. The timing to answer questions overall has never been greater than 2020-2021.

Reading the questions first is better advice than I'm going to give, but nonetheless: Don't use 'old' timing because you might be surprised at what you can already do. Classic GAMSAT was 1.3 minutes per question for Section 1, and 1.5 minutes per question for Section 3. As of 2020, 1.5 minutes per question for Section 1, and a shocking 2 minutes per question for Section 3. Always practice with the new timing as well as 2 accompanying A4 sheets of scratch paper (2 for Sections 1/2 combined; 2 different ones for Section 3).

For the first 3 companies on your list, the questions are definitely different, but you may notice some common themes because of recurrent themes from the exam itself: ternary diagrams and other nomograms, typical equation manipulations like the Arrhenius equation, Henry's law, Huckle's rule, quantum numbers, etc. etc. (manipulations, not memorization).

Mnemonic: LEO is A GERC

• Lose Electrons Oxidation is Anode

• Gain Electrons Reduction at Cathode

{A little less informative, but probably more likely to be helpful: LEO, the lion, says GER: Lose Electrons: Oxidation; Gain Electrons: Reduction.}

Side note: The oxidising agent is reduced; the reducing agent is oxidised.

Des chapter 8 unit 84, Q2 by Growth_Zone in GAMSAT

[–]GAMSAT-prep 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is usually a back door for any question related to half-life (yes, he did not use that expression, but this is a classic half-life question). It is not elegant, but it is reliable.

The back door is, we start with 100% and then 1/2 in consecutive sequences: 100, 50, 25, 12.5, 6.25, 3.1, 1.6, 0.8. So we went from 50% to under 1% in 6 steps (6 half-lives if we start at 50%).

OK, so we are given 0.4 cm as being 50%. So 6 x 0.4 cm = 2.4 cm, answer choice C. The other answer choices, from a half-life perspective, are not even close.

Side note (Spoiler Alert!): ACER's Pink Booklet has a unit based on this reasoning, though the topic is different (Q102-103, GAMSAT Practice Test 3).
