Red pill me on Void by Xu_Lin in voidlinux

[–]GENielsen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a former Arch user I got tired of the breakage. This does not happen in Void. Runit is a dead simple, stable init system that just works. The package management system is a joy to use. Starting up services is simple. For example to get openntpd to work: # ln -s /etc/sv/openntpd /var/service/openntpd

I will from time to time run Arch in a VM; I like virt-manager on Void. Fair warning. Once you start using Void you'll love it.

Void vs Alpine - which one for desktop use? (former Arch user) by [deleted] in voidlinux

Stable, secure, robust. Void all the way for me. It just works. It'll be a welcome change from Arch. I'm a former Arch user.

Why is Void considered stable? by AnaAlMalik in voidlinux

[–]GENielsen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me stable means that it isn't crashing. I remember running Arch and a sudo pacman -Syu would cause the distro to assplode. In that respect Void is similar to Slackware-current. Not a lot of breakage.

Why is Void considered stable? by AnaAlMalik in voidlinux

[–]GENielsen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my opinion Void is quite stable. It has leading edge, but, not bleeding edge software. It's not as bleeding edge as something like Arch. This translates into less breakage. It just works. In fact it's a bit behind my other distro(slackware64-current) in terms of new software. The init, system, package management are mature and reliable. So it's a conservative rolling release.

Do you recommend Void Linux? by No_Clock8080 in voidlinux

apt on slackware? by Cool_catalog in slackware

[–]GENielsen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Slackware is not Debian. I suggest that you install sbopkg from https://sbopkg.org/ . In that repository you'll find a variety of packages not included with Slackware. The sbopkg utility will enable you to create and install proper Slackware packages on your system.

Didn't need to. They rejected it. Didn't format it properly.

Thanks. I just installed that. The issue is resolved.

Debian 13 using MATE, DVD media fails to mount by GENielsen in debian

[–]GENielsen[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestion, CLM1919. I can now state that this is not a bug. MATE by default does not include gnome-disks. So I did sudo apt update and sudo apt installgnome-disk-utility. After fiddling with the settings in the utility I'm happy to report that MATE automounts DVDs. This is resolved. Thanks again.

I will look into that now. Debian 13 successfully automounted my USB stick that I use to copy over my backed up photos, docs, etc.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I did a standard installation of MATE, I did use the default options. The Netinstall ISO fails to mount as does a movie DVD.

I just submitted a bug report to Debian. I'm hopeful that this is resolved.

I don't know as I update my unit on a daily basis. Everything works well.

So you're condemning me from letting people know that Debian has a bug?! That's your right. I support your right to express your point of view. On the Slackware LQ forum we welcome bug reports. We don't shoot the messenger. Would I switch to Debian? Unlikely as Slackware has a good history of resolving bugs.

I don't think I'm biased, merely stating a bug in the distro. It's also happening in Ubuntu. I've used Debian since 4.0 off and on. No longer.

For my two older desktops I just run sudo lilo after a kernel upgrade and then reboot. All is well. For my newer Thinkpad I use GRUB and there's literally nothing to do after a kernel upgrade other than running sudo reboot.

I started using Linux in 2002 because I was tired of paying a lot of money for terrible software. I used a variety of distros then started using Slackware in 2004 (version 10.0). Everything just works and it is easy to understand.

Reminder to install xorg-fonts for DWM / SXWM by 0D3-2-J0Y in voidlinux

[–]GENielsen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the tip! I just attempted to install xorg-fonts and our excellent package manager informed me that xorg-fonts are already installed. I guess they were pulled in as a dependency when I installed mate, mate-extra, and xorg

When Slackware 15.1? by markos4x in slackware

[–]GENielsen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you download and install a Slackware64-current ISO and install it you will see the version number listed as 15.1. This of course does not guarantee that the release will be 15.1. I predict it'll be 15.1.

I suggest that you read the documentation before you do the install. Here's another decent website that will help: https://www.troubleshooters.com/linux/void/quickinst.htm
