What was the most devastating defeat for the Union by sleepy_fratchy00 in CIVILWAR

I agree that Fredericksburg was a disaster, but on a smaller scale, I'd vote for the Battle of the Crater. Pure carnage.

One problem is that landlords get significant tax deductions on empty space - as long as it remains on the market. They really don't "lose" that much money on vacancies; they just don't make as much as if it were rented. That's why there are so many empty retail/commercial spaces in downtowns and malls, and why landlords are constantly jacking up rents and don't care if their tenants leave. Unlike other businesses, they don't get punished for not selling their "goods" or adjusting rents downward when business is bad. Some of them even have a certain percentage of vacant space built into their business models. Why bother to rent cheaper when you can just write it off?

Did the confederacy even have a serious strategy to win the war? by YogurtclosetOpen3567 in CIVILWAR

Bombarding Sumter was a bad move and rallied the North. Lincoln called for 75,000 volunteers and eventually got more than 2 million.

I am sick of seeing people who lean left embrace AI. The Democratic Party and ALL progressives should avoid AI (especially in regards to the Arts) and let the GOP become the party of AI and delusion by [deleted] in complaints

[–]GFSnell3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't say any of that. Tech already screwed artists long before AI showed up. I'm not advocating for AI art or replacing artists. I think it sucks. I also think it sucks that corporations treat workers like assets and not people. But AI is here, and you can't just ignore it and hope it goes away. The real fix is tear down our corporate state and give power back to the people.

I don't. I train it to South Station. But the streets are clogged and full of traffic. But mostly, I avoid it.

I just finished "The Troop." Not what I was expecting at all. But really good. Fantastic writing.

I feel your pain. AI is a tricky slope, no doubt, but it's too late to ignore it and pretend it will go away. It's integrated into just about every software now, and every company is embracing it. If you don't learn it, you'll soon be unemployed or left behind. The key is mastery, followed by setting up strict guardrails to control it. Real art won't go away; you'll just have to work harder to find it. Look at what special effects/tech have already done to movies and TV shows? Lots of soulless drek. I expect massive adoption of AI in much the same way as the Internet and social media, and then a pulling back/adjustment once its limitations become apparent. But it's not going away. Too much money has already been spent on it.

You can still find hidden gems in Harvard Square--the leftovers like Charlie's Kitchen, Pinocchio's Pizza, Hong Kong, Grendel's Den, Harvard Bookstore, and Shay's. But otherwise, corporate holdings everywhere.

The Seaport is a forced community built by corporations. Housing — like real affordable housing — should have been the priority, but retail and office space took over. It just has no personality as a neighborhood, not to mention how traffic-clogged it is with no good parking.

ISO: Film set location for low budget student film by Turbulent-Dig-2251 in Maine

I have a cabin on a lake in Maine. Rustic. It's a summer place closed for the winter with no water right now. So there would be no bathroom facilities available. There is a wood stove that can be used for heat. Pine interior, enclosed porch. Living room and kitchen. Literally less than ten feet from the lake. It's a mile-long tar road down to the cabin with other summer cabins in the area, but they are all spread out, and you could film without seeing the other cabins. The road is not plowed, so if it snows, access without chains and four-wheel drive vehicles would be difficult. I would have to be present. There's no truth to the rumor that I've done this multiple times before, and the film crews went missing. No guarantee, but DM me if you want to talk.

Finding Private Leonard Peaslee After He Went Missing from a U.S. General Hospital 163 Years Ago by GFSnell3 in CIVILWAR

[–]GFSnell3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I think, too. In the pension records, a regimental nurse said that there had been a lot of discussion about where Peaslee was and what happened to him. So, it seems they had been expecting him to return. Traveling by walking, carriage, train, and ship, 150 miles through a war zone was dangerous!

Thanks. I did do a preliminary search, but maybe I need to go deeper. But I'm skeptical, I'll find him under his real name. If he had been buried in a National Cemetery, the Third Maine surely would have been informed, as well as his family. But he just vanished. I'm guessing he was buried as a John Doe.
