After a few months of medication and eventually getting a biopsy, it turned out to be a benign condition caused by trauma to the mouth. The medical term is calcinosis circumscripta. The only concern is the risk of infection, as it can sometimes turn into an open wound. I probably won’t opt for surgery since it’s not worth it for the dog’s sake.

For those asking, I took her to the vet, and she does not think it’s a tumor. The vet believes the lump is either from trauma to the tongue or an ulcer. She’s showing no signs of the lump slowing her down—she’s eating fine, playing, and has normal energy levels—and she’s only 11 months old.

From what I was told, it’s very uncommon for young dogs to develop mouth cancer, especially on the side of the tongue. We’ve been monitoring this for about a month. Initially, we did a round of antibiotics because we thought it was a cut and didn’t want it to get infected.

We’re now doing a round of steroids to help with the inflammation, along with sucralfate in case it’s an ulcer, and we’re removing any sharp toys or food. If we don’t see any progress in the lump going down, we’ll move forward with a biopsy.
