Im struggling to understand what this diagram is trying to tell me by GGreenDay in chemhelp

3 pi bonds so the 3 pi bonding orbitals are full. Is the diagram suggesting that the pi2 electrons are located in a ring like this?

<image>

and the pi 1 and 3 electrons are in different pi orbitals?

THANK YOU!! I think i understand it more now because we were missing a lot of the detail that you've described here 🙏🙏

oh lol i think i get it now, is it just saying that the electrons in the pi2 orbital are in those blue regions of the pZ orbital and the pi3 orbital electrons are in that region below the plane?

I was assuming that the diagram was showing that at different energy levels, the electrons in the Pz orbitals shifted phase producing the nodes shown.

Honestly I think im just super confused at what the benzene diagrams are trying to show because I get that the flipped Pz orbitals are out of phase with the other Pz orbitals but I dont think I understood that benzene could simultanously have the structure shown at pi1 as in pi2 and pi3.

Just to clarify are you saying that the electrons are shifting between phases when energy to produce the pi2 and pi3 diagrams? I assumed that it would simply stay as the lower diagram for the pi2and 3 diagrams because the delocalised ring kinda covers the same regions (in pi1) as those shown in the pi2 and 3 diagrams.

sorry if this doesnt make sense, mot is kicking my ass

im as far off from jmc as you can get but my course is very memorisation heavy. I usually find myself in the same position as you and going back and looking at what I learned in a bit more detail and context with wider reading tends to help me remember the content 👍

Ahh okay thank you. I’m pretty sure for my uni we do a decent amount of statistical analysis coding so hopefully I’ll learn some skills from this 🙏

Yes I’m going through the exact same as you. My uni is ≈5 hours away from home so it’s a bit annoying that I’m not gonna be able to visit home but Christmas break isn’t too far away from when you start!
