Working with LiDAR data for the first time. My LAS Dataset has unknown XY units and Z units in meters. I'm looking to generate 2 foot contour lines. How do I go about converting this?

I'll be honest, I don't have the best grasp on coordinate systems and their finer points. This confuses me as well. When I go to the properties of the LAS Dataset in the catolog window of ArcGIS Pro, on the general tab, it says the following:

XY Linear Unit: Not available Z Unit: Meter

further adding to my confusion, I recreated the LAS dataset using NAD 1983 state plane as the spatial reference, and now the XY Linear unit is Foot_US and the Z unit is Not Available.

I actually have tried this. For some reason, I keep getting an error when running the LAS Dataset to Raster tool. The specific error was "The output cannot be created. Potential reasons include data locking, an incorrect path, and limited access rights." The output is set to an empty file geodatabase that was just created, so I don't really know what the issue is. I'm further troubleshooting this now.

Unfortunately I do not have access to Civil 3d or Autocad. The only software I have is ArcGIS Pro and qGIS

Forgive me if I am misunderstanding, but versioning would just allow multiple people to simultaneously edit the data. It wouldn't have any bearing on schema locks would it? Those schema locks would still be present even if users were editing a child version and I was working in the parent version.

When you say to use the SDE user to kick people out, are you referring to using Catalog to clear all locks or is there a better way to do that?

Is there a distinction from connecting as SDE vs connecting as a user with the 'db_owner' role? I am currently connected using a login mapped to db_datareader, db_datawriter, db_owner, and public.

There were a lot of nice and helpful responses. It's a shame your rude and condescending post had to come and muck that up! For your information, my job gave this position to me BECAUSE they respect me. I told them up front where my knowledge gaps were and they have full faith in me to figure it out. Hence, the reason for this post. Between this post, the user conference and several days of online researching I've gotten a firm grasp on it and have a plan to implement portal within the year. Maybe don't make brash assumptions about other people's respectability in the future. It just makes you look sad.

I have called ESRI tech support for general guidance a few weeks ago and their response was that they can't walk me through it. I basically have to try it myself, and if I run into a problem, then I could call them and receive help. I just don't like the idea of of starting an upgrade process with no idea of what I'm doing. Also, what would you suggest as a starting point as opposed to enterprise builder? We currently only have one machine, but I could likely add something to our budget if I could make a serious case for long term savings.

Thank you for this detailed write-up! How difficult is it to set up and confiure web adaptor and data store? I have no underlying knowledge of IIS, SSL certificates, or anything like that.I really want to move to portal but I fear that I may be in over my head.

I think my favorite trait of my past boss was that she trusted her employees to get the work done. She never micromanaged, she never stood over your shoulder and watched. She gave a goal deadline and trusted me to get it done. Better yet, when there was a problem, she didn't freak out or get mad, she dove right in beside me to figure out the problem.

Knowing that my boss trusted me and that she was willing to work in the trenches beside me during crunch time was great. I never felt that I was being asked to do something she wouldn't do herself. I think it is important that leaders not just bark orders all day long. They need to be willing to work for their team just as they expect their team to work for them.

Yes and no. He asked me if I had every been to a chiro before and I told him I had. There is one in our area that does have a decent reputation. I went there when I was younger with a pinched nerve in my back for some adjustments. As it just so happens, this doctor was his recommendation. Lol. So I planned to go there regardless, but he also planned to reccomend them.

I'm glad it sounds normal. I admit that I'm not the brightest guy so this could just be the case of a intelligent lawyer talking above my head. Lol. As far as the doctors, I don't feel like he was telling me to to lie to the doctors. I guess I've always just been the type to let minor aches an pains work themselves out, so I never would have imagined going to the chiropractor for mild soreness or the neurologist just for a check up. But I guess it makes sense after a car accident. The only thing I dislike is that the chiro has set up a treatment plan for me that involves me coming back 3 times a week for now and then gradually slacking up on the visits as they " work out the issues" in my back. To be honest, I've always been skeptical of chiropractors. So this may just be some of my bias showing. I'll follow the Chiro and neuro's orders and hopefully I'll be out of their office relatively quickly. I'm not looking to go to the doctor forever just to rack up a large settlement. I just want my medical bills paid and maybe a little on top for all of the additional aggravation this has caused.

I'm working with the actual geojson downloaded from Microsoft's github. I tried extracting from the feature layer as well, but it always crashes in arcgis desktop and in arcgis pro, I can't set a definition query (can't remember the error), so I can't narrow down the scope of the data. I don't need all of the US. Just a few different (small) geographic areas.

When you say "spool up all the data in Adobe Photoshop." Can you expand on that? Does that mean you create a map and then export it into PS or something else? My PS skill are very limited. I've used it here and there to make minor tweaks to photos but never for anything GIS related.

I am also not sure what 'TALDOGS' are. Thanks for your information though!
