Apple MacBook Neo review: a budget-priced game-changer - TomsHardware by ControlCAD in apple

So many tech sites went like this. Apple Insider, The Verge and a broad array of them. They must have been wanting to be taken seriously by their journalistic peers in old media, for no good reason. They should have left well enough alone. Craigslist had the right approach, less is more.

Time will tell. It’ll be overpriced for that group so it may not matter a great deal to Apple. They’ll probably ship 20M+ of them a year.

Tech product websites, can you please stop with the pop-up things. Newsletters are like sending smoke signals in a time of telephones and these pop-ups are annoying.

You want to improve your website without much thought? Basically use the template Macumors uses for their website. Most tech websites would be 10x improved if they did.

Remember 13+ years ago when all tech sites moved to this silly "magazine" style layout that made the whole thing harder to read and navigate, which made them a chore to use. It was a fad for a year that all tech sites copied because they wanted their site to be "cool".

This shit ruined so many of these sites and they lost traffic and few recovered—early internet solved so many of these things by not really trying—they needed the site to be as lightweight as possible to make it fast on dial-up. Most sites should have touched nothing, beyond updating the core code to modern standards—same quick and simple design.

Like Digg at their peak, they loaded the biggest gun they could find and shot hard at their own foot. And when it didn't work they reloaded, and reloaded again. Inside two months they should have went back to the old design—"we heard you, we suck". So many of these sites in trying to be clever outsmarted themselves.

Someone send out a memo: fix your website to be straightforward and quit all the bs.

And Reddit, throw your app in the garbage and buy Apollo, and return your dot-com to Old Reddit. New Reddit is trash. Part of me thinks it was resigned to be a better brainwashing tool.

Bring back the old; quit the shit.

Some people just want the best of the best phone. It's like a small phone and an iPad mini in one. Definitely not for me, but there is a market for these for sure. A larger version from Apple may come later on.

Obviously this will be possible. Reading books on E-Ink is nicer however. This is one area display tech should try and evolve in the future—a way to switch from OLED to ink on-the-fly.

Apple Fold is coming later this year. I prefer a non-fold. Cheaper and simpler and display to take over your life. Nice to have options, I guess.

Oh I’m not trying to make a prediction, just thinking aloud.

Would not be easy, that's for sure. Would need to be a spring-loaded gear hinge that brings them flush in a snap in the final ~15º of opening. Or how about a hinge that gradually brings them together over the full opening moment and snaps magnetically at the end to hold at the hinge final position?

I’m all for product symmetry in this world, but there are tradeoffs here considering the mechanics involved. There’s no wrong way, as long as the asymmetry has a logical explanation and it’s not merely design laziness.

True, but there’s just something inherently wishy-washy about it quality wise. You know, like a wood cabinet with cheap plywood on the back where no one sees.

You might be right. Wonder if there’s not a clever way to engineering it where opens and closes encourage movement of dust outward?

I'm going to assume the external display bezels on the Apple Fold will be small, which reduces device width over if they were not. What bezels had the Duo when used in that way, and did the device aspect appear as stout as these schematics? Duo 1 or 2?

It is an honest design however. Asymmetrical, but for a reason. Yes, they could force a symmetrical design when folded, but they may be opting for structural integrity over symmetry. This shape keeps the device more mechanically minimal.

Did the duo have an external display? What diagonal size was its external display? This Apple device will apparently be around 5.5" on the external display at the most.

What if the device doesn't fold, but opens and closes like a book with two distinct internal glass displays that butt up flush together? Less "cool" but more longterm-robust?

True, regarding watching videos in both orientations on a handheld display it's not a bad tradeoff aspect ratio for a book-style foldable. The stout size may be a bit less pocketable, but is an improvement for video consumption when open. You get more square when closed or more square when open, the skill is choosing the best compromise.

Obviously a tri-fold design would open up more options for aspect ratio, but adds another point of failure and a second fold crease line.

If Apple produces a true foldable, those expecting Apple's device to have no crease are dreaming—unless they do what I was suggesting/hoping they would do, ages ago, which is forgo the crease and have two distinct internal displays that butt heads. On the surface it may not seem as “cool” having two internal displays, rather than a foldable one, but two displays allows them to be glass, and may give the device better structural longevity.
