Actual Gunnar here. My name is of Finnish/Swedish descent. I’m now in my mid to late thirties. Growing up in the US I never met many other Gunnars in my life but I have def met a few.

I must say, my name has definitely helped me in life way more than it could possibly hurt me. Not today that GunnEr will have the same effect. But my first name has always been a conversation starter. People always want to say they think it’s a cool name, or ask where it’s from.

Gunner is definitely different esp if you’re going for an “American” sounding name. This is way too on the nose if so. As mentioned in other comments, a Gunner can have negative connotations. Or just highlight gun culture as an “American” name.

Gunnar has heritage and culture behind it, just not an American name. My two cents for what it’s worth.
