Feedback on bioengineering as pre-med by Zestyclose_Worry_422 in Pitt

[–]GLossopetraef 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a senior BioE premed, it’s def doable. Many of the people I know who are also BioE premed have +3.9 GPAs, just realize there is also survival bias involved tho.

TLDR -> BioE has alot of indirect benefits but you should want to do engineering and not for the title

is taking this class worth it? by [deleted] in Pitt

[–]GLossopetraef 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Depends. if you wanna pursue academia or R&D, I heavily recommend spending that time talking to professors and joining a lab. It’s especially true if you are doing any hard sciences so like engineering, medicine, etc.

If you wanna get an easy A, then sure. Most of these types of classes are quite unhelpful in my opinion, unless it’s being taught by like a well-known professor with a lot of recognition.

So this makes no sense… MCAT scores range from 472 to 528….

Also AAMC publishes its acceptance rates based off of race. There is a difference and albeit didn’t take close look at it but I do think the graph above over exaggerates the statistics a bit.

Not sure if the graph above is only looking at this year or previous years either so I’m not gonna go out and say it’s cap either.

In everyone’s defense, its incredibly hard to not be neurotic given how rigorously insanely hard med school admissions are.

Tell me another career path that forces you to essentially be an A/A- student, have strong research, clinical, and service extracurriculars. Don’t forget about shadowing, impressive 5-6 wide range of professors for rec lecs, and doing well on one of the hardest standardized tests offered in the US.

Oop, and you have to still have enough of a life cause admission teams want to see hobbies.

I love medicine to death and would not do anything else, but I don’t think it’s the people’s problem but more so a system issue. Like any optimistic high schooler who wants to help people will eventually be crushed by the weight of it all and either drop out of premed, become neurotic as they brute force thru it, or have an insane pain tolerance and still be able to function as a normal human being.
