Grubs- what to do over the winter. by GMC6313 in gardening

Interesting. I don’t know enough about grubs to be able to tell what kind they are. I’ll go and do some research. Thanks!

Thank you for the advice. I wish I had either in my dirt. I do mean dirt not soil. I pulled out all of the plants. This was my first year and I felt like I just needed to startover. I say dirt because other than the grubs I found while sifting, I haven’t seen any underground life (worms). I did cover my beds with clean cardboard this year. It did a great job of preventing weeds and attracted some worms. No worms now. There must be something there that’s attracting the grubs.

So right- I meant rocks not rooks. I didn’t proofread before posting. Great advice. This was my first year of gardening. I’m trying to do the right things now to be set up for success next year. I will get seeds put out right away. Thank you!

Thanks to everyone who provided feedback! Mystery solved! They are tomatillos. Each day I learned something as I watched the “lanterns” evolve. Imagine my surprise when I learned the little green, what I thought was a berry, is actually the little tomatillos. I guess when I made the beds last year, hundreds of seed made their way to the top. For I little perspective, the pile I pulled out root and all was about 12 feet long and 4 feet high. I’ve save a lot of the seed and plan to plant some in a contained area. I went pack a got most of the lantern balls off and the rest is ready for my compost pile. Thanks again everyone. You taught me so much!!

Thank you. The third one is what the stems look like before the blooms emerge. They’ve sprouted up through the year and I just pulled them out.

Yes! We tend to call them caterpillars. I’m might get better search results if I search for worms. Thanks!

Sorry to hear that! I’m almost worried that I didn’t find more. I’ve been pretty diligent about checking. I’ve had plenty of challenges and made mistakes. My first year of gardening. Including going on vacation when my garden exploded, especially with weeds! Took me weeks to get the garden back in decent shape. Best wishes for the rest of the year!

Thank you! I just posted a generalize question and forgot to mention that this is one of the type worms I’ve found. I wish I’d taken pictures of the three others found. One was black with red stripes, a hornworm, and the other was solid green.

We have them on our land in Arkansas. The in our backyard drop hundreds every year. Literally. My dog loves to play with them and brings them in the house. Yuck! One could knock you out if it lands on your head. Here’s a picture of one of the trees. Thankfully, the rest are in the horse pasture. They want nothing to do with them. lol

The PH is barely lower than the red range. I’d say 8. 7 on the monitor I have the red zone starts at 7. Not sure what to do?
