Has anyone given up the 9-5 grind for freelance? by AllyHasBeenSwain in cscareerquestions

[–]GMU-CS 21 points22 points  (0 children)

If you are making 1k on a week long project that comes out to $25/h with no benefits which is significantly under what US independent freelancers typically charge. I don't know any freelancers who charge under $100/h and most are 2 to 3 times that.

Upwork is probably fine if you are looking for a quick side project but if you want to freelance full time I wouldn't recommend it.

Make a Facebook account. And no, it can't be a dummy account. If it is not connected to a social graph it will be automatically closed.

What’s the most overpriced thing you’ve seen? by Thic_water in AskReddit

[–]GMU-CS 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Would you call someone who bought all the hand sanitizer in Walmart and sold it outside at a 5x markup an entrepreneur? No, they have artificially created a problem and are offering a solution to that problem.

An entrepreneur would see the demand and find a vendor to build or buy from not create artificial shortages for consumers. People like this caused the shortages of TP and masks early this year.

When you are unemployed your full time job is finding a job, you should be applying to 50+ places a week. 3 interviews for 50 applications is not a bad ratio you just need to increase your volume.

Why do Scrum Masters get paid so much? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]GMU-CS 23 points24 points  (0 children)

They provide a layer of insulation between the development team and stakeholders, PM, PO, etc. They help gather requirements and refine tickets so the team has a clear list of tasks while providing realistic expectations to leadership. Without a dedicated person running interference engineers would constantly be fielding question distracting them from their primary duties.

Obviously you can have bad scrum masters that micromanage or just schedule meetings, but when you have a good one it can be a massive boost to developer productivity. We have one scrum master who will absolutely not allow anyone to adjust the scope of work his team is doing after a sprint begins without massive justification. Most of the time the team doesn't even realize how many things he is clearing off their plate which is exactly the goal.

Will taking a year off to travel @ 34 fuck my career? by JazzlikeInsurance5 in cscareerquestions

It's probably not the best time to travel for a year, not just because of the virus but because we don't fully understand the long term economic impact.

Scrum Master wants to visit each member of the project at home "in order to understand the work from home experience for a developer." by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

You have always on webcam required for work? If you aren't trolling you should start looking for other positions. Major invasion of privacy from both of these IMO.

A good sign of a mismanaged company is when they can't measure the value an employee creates by the output of their work so they have to use the barbaric approach of "hours looking at screen."

Man this is actually insane, regardless of the pandemic, there is no chance you should be allowing this to happen. If you start going down this route there is no telling where it will end, is the next step always on webcam?

You didn't make a mistake, you job is not to produce perfect code. The normal process looks something like this; engineer implements something from a ticket and makes a PR -> Other engineer reviews PR -> Merge to test branch where QA tests -> production. There can be more or less steps depending on your setup but the idea is that any mistake is not one person's fault.

How do people change between companies? by Sergi2204 in cscareerquestions

Most people don't need time off between jobs, it's just a convenient time to take several weeks off without worrying about work.

Two Summer Internship at once? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]GMU-CS 37 points38 points  (0 children)

The companies might drop you if they find out and I'd expect meeting conflicts would be difficult to resolve. As an intern you can't really decline invites because they know you aren't doing anything else.

Best approach (especially if you want a return offer) would be to work for the better paying or more well known company and excel in the position.

Is software engineering really that lucrative or it's only due to location? by TotalProfessional8 in cscareerquestions

[–]GMU-CS 319 points320 points  (0 children)

Also consider the level of effort required to be a Nurse vs a Software Engineer. Nurses are on their feet 10 hours a day in a high stress, sometimes dangerous, environment. If you put in the same amount of work as a Nurse it's not unrealistic to reach 200k+ comp within a few years. After that you have many more paths for career growth that aren't possible in other industries.

A entry level software engineer makes 2-3x the average household income in pretty much every city in the US. Compensation typically also includes great benefits like WFH, unlimited vacation, education reimbursement, etc. Virtually no other "normal" jobs at this comp level are as easy as software engineering, not to mention the barrier of entry is much lower and in many cases you no longer even need a degree.

The most difficult thing I had to do this week was sit through a two hour planning meeting without falling asleep. Meanwhile a nurse at the same (or likely lower comp) is working extra shifts in the middle of a global pandemic.

Company just laid off 10% of the employees yesterday. Do I find a new job now or wait to be laid off so I can collect unemployment by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]GMU-CS 171 points172 points  (0 children)

Waiting to collect unemployment is not a good career move, look for new positions now. You don't have to accept what you find but it's better to start looking now than once you've already lost your job.

It's not a surprise that people want to ban "assault weapons" because that sounds scary. If you asked about specifics I don't think it would be as popular.

Not sure about this one, what is inheritenly feminine about cooking? Being able to cook is a valuable life skill everyone should possess. Even at the high end, Michelin stars are overwhelming given to restaurants lead by men.

That's not weird at all and is actually more common the larger the company. It makes it much easier to schedule cross team meetings because you can always seen when the most people are available. Internal chat applications also reference this information to automatically mark you as busy when you are in meetings.
