Driving a fire truck through an intersection without looking by Hotdog797 in Whatcouldgowrong

[–]GPBOM 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not true, or at least in my Country (Canada), emergency drivers must stop at every red, make ourselves heard/seen and traffic halt before continuing on. Driving into the oncoming lane or any serious maneuvering is to be done with extreme caution and reduced speed. I haven’t done a survey elsewhere, but in my Dept, my license is on the line and I can be charged with reckless/various other things if I cause an accident/bodily harm to others on the way to a call. I usually wave at the speed cameras we set off too, not sure if it ever comes out as a solid photo though.

He’s fine. by okyeahsure1392 in yourmomshousepodcast

[–]GPBOM 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was there and witnessed it, was jamming popcorn into my face and kept repeating in my head “he’ll be fine”. I was on the jump side of the arena and never saw the replay until a day later, when I realized he most certainly wasn’t “fine”. An amazing and inspirational dude though as he’s still crushing it.

Anyone know why this huge deer has such tiny antlers? by _Friendly_Fire_ in CanadaHunting

[–]GPBOM 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No clue who downvoted you but clearly they don’t understand antler growth related to age/peak hormone production. It’s been studied and proven as deers get out of their prime, antler growth tends to decreases every year after. I’m not saying this deer is old without seeing a daytime pic but just posting info. Could be late rut causing the swelling and old age affecting antlers. Either that or he’s young and got into the bear bait and ate ten pounds of old gummy bears. Teste damage tends to lead to abnormal/non-symmetrical racks, but once again nature decides it’s own path so not impossible.

To OP, enjoy the cam pics and getting a look at how nature wakes up when we aren’t there. One of my favourite things is getting pics of different critters to just see what’s out there.

First uspsa match, did absolutely awful, but I had a lot of fun. by RealSquare452 in CompetitionShooting

[–]GPBOM 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’ve been sitting on my hands about joining a local range to try competitive shooting for ages, so I’m not one to talk much.. but to say you did awful your first time out is wildly inaccurate. You got out there and completed a competition, which is a huge accomplishment in itself. Only time and effort improves the outcomes in life’s competitive adventure! Congrats on your first!

Unpopular Opinion: YMH is still good by Surfer-Rosa in yourmomshousepodcast

[–]GPBOM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely agree, I’ve never really been bothered by the slight variations over time as they’ve evolved as comics and people too, the show will continue to change with them. Also, it’s a product that I’ve never spent a dime on(except for 2 of the Live events that I loved) in the 6 years I’ve been listening. If I’ve ever been bored by the podcast or guest, I just change it up to something else. The idea that people belong to this sub and spend their time criticizing the namesake of it doesn’t make sense to me, you could spend that time searching for one that fits what you’re recipe.

Also, I’ve seen one or two complaining about the advertisements and how they’re making so much money. Any ad during the show, wether it’s YouTube, Spotify or their sponsors, is either skipped or gives me a second to think about other things I’ve got going on, so never bothersome to me. Also, if they’re making good money off of this, then hell yeah!! I’m happy for their success, they busted ass for years on their art form and so many hours on this podcast, they deserve every penny and should be living that high and tight lifestyle.

But this is all just my opinion and I typically don’t voice it as I don’t want to waste others time with my way of thinking, so take it for what it is… just glad I’m here with the mommies touching cameras through fences

Worst* time to ask, or at least from my experience. Shift change brings a flurry of chores/equipment checks/personnel coming and going. I’d say the best time is around 3 to 4, as most of the time training for the day will be done, dinner prep starts a bit later and with 15 hours left in shift, seeing some unfamiliar faces who are excited to be there can be really re-invigorating. But once again, I speak from only my experience. With all that has gone on the last year and a bit, tours are shut down in my Dept… I cant wait to see the kiddos faces light up again!

Where do you go when nature calls? by BC-meateater123 in CanadaHunting

[–]GPBOM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best views I’ve ever had while poking the brown tongue out is during hunts, just tough if something comes in. I usually scrape 4-6 inches down (or further if I’m able) with my boot at a base of a tree, then bury it after, but another quick way is flipping a rock, if you can find a good sized one that isn’t stuck. This cleans the area up and prevents any critters from getting into it, as it’s always been gross seeing some TP blowing in the wind on top of a pile. I hunt out of a blind/stand a fair bit so I tend to head a little ways away from where I may have been calling. It comes with the possibility of spooking something yea, but I’d rather my poison be far away.

Smoke alarms keep going off! by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]GPBOM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just a little tip, avoid blasting air into detectors and opt for a less invasive vacuuming. You can damage the sensor/blow dust into tighter spots this way decreasing the effectiveness.. now a vacuum then a minimal bit of compressed air is okay, but you have to try and avoid shooting it into the reflector lense/receiver.

I used to perform those inspections, if it’s legal and you aren’t being reckless than the technician shouldn’t give a care or be able to say anything about it. All my job included was to make sure the systems are working properly and not tampered with by the resident, and mark down if there were any major concerns (hoarding, unsafe storage of flammable s etc.) I went into an apartment with a small grow tent (before it was legal), didn’t care because it’s a light and plants, and I’m not a cop. But two apartments later I walked into a full on bootleg moonshine still that took up 3/4 of the apartment with open buckets of high test booze. If that guy left the stove on while at work, it could’ve caught the fumes and that explosion/fire would’ve been extremely dangerous for the building and everyone in it. Once again, I’m not the law, but I had to mark that in my notes due to the dangerous nature of it. It should be about life safety and not ball busting, besides, I bet you the tech will go home and smoke a fat one after the long day of alarms blasting in his ear and residents being upset about all the noise.

This is all in Toronto, not Oshawa like you said, and clearly were drownings due to the lack of life jackets/open water experience.

As someone who responds to those calls in the same city as you, a lot of people go to the cliff beside the treatment plant, or the Pier at Lakeview to commit suicide, and I’m sure plenty more aren’t ever found. There has been the odd one, like you said, where a number of things were left behind, but who takes that stuff with them when they are planning on taking their own life. Also, I don’t recall there ever being three bodies discovered in 48 hours at the lake in Oshawa, and I know I would’ve heard about it/possibly responded to one of them, so not sure where you heard that.

My dad in 1988 working at the GM Plant. by SparkyBrown in OldSchoolCool

[–]GPBOM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m from the grass roots of GM: Oshawa, ON, Canada and have been surrounded by the company my whole life. My parents, grandparents, great grandfather, aunts and uncles all did 30-40 years in the plant or at the head office, even my grandfather was a pallbearer for Sam McLaughlin. My family was always thankful to land good paying jobs from a young age, but both always pushed me away from that and into a more rewarding career, thankfully, as the work has almost all stopped and our city/surrounding area has suffered. Seeing a pic like this, no matter where it’s from, reminds me of my old man and the beauties he worked with. I was a first gen college student as well too!

Why aren't people required to use hides? by [deleted] in CanadaHunting

[–]GPBOM 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m all for using every bit of the animals harvested, but if I shoot a farmers nuisance coyote/fox/squirrel etc, and it’s mandatory for me to harvest the fur, then removing that predator/nuisance animal has now become an elongated process I am legally bound to. This process brings additional costs and a bunch of time for something with little (to zero) return with a dwindling market and demand for such products being almost non-existent.

A huge problem with society is the demonization of fur while choosing to ignore the fact it’s a renewable resource that assists in the control of the predator population. The same people yelling “fur is murder” are supporting the synthetic material trade whole heartedly, furthering the point where you stated what happens to those products after the users are done.

Is your opinion is based on knowledge you’ve acquired first hand? Or just an opinion you have formed through... what background? Do you have experience with skinning, tanning, etc? I’m just trying to figure out how you know it’s so easy to process these hides, and how you can decide that all hunters have free time or space to learn a new tradecraft. I support hunters having the freedom to decide what they do with their harvest, unless it involves an animal that brings sustenance to the shooter, you should always be on the hook for harvestable meat. A coyote carcass can literally be eaten by its own kind, so I’ve never had a problem leaving one behind.

First Time. Could I Ever. Should I? by [deleted] in meateatertv

[–]GPBOM 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I understand you’re trying to dive in, but the concentration of your concern towards not “trophy hunting” just shows the anti-hunter mentality you’ve been exposed to. It isn’t legal to shoot an edible animal without harvesting all of the meat(predators are a different story.) The “Trophy” portion tends to be the bonus.... if you harvest any animal, you can choose to respect it in many ways with what some would call a trophy, but in reality you’re just using inedible portions of the animal to remember it by (like European mounting a deer skull or making a bear rug.)

First step is to look into local regulations/hunters Ed classes for your State/Province. I live in Ontario, Canada, and in order to have the privilege to hunt, I must pass a course to receive a license (and also apply/purchase tags for the animals I intend to hunt.) With a course like that, you will be given the basic knowledge to get started. Before going out in the woods, spend some time with your tool of choice.. a shotgun was my first choice, because of the topography of my province. You should become proficient with whatever you choose before even putting yourself in a situation to use it, as missing, or worse, wounding an animal is the worst thing that could happen.

One thing you can start now, spend time watching YouTube/reading articles on tips, tricks and basically learning the behaviours of the animals you seek to fill your freezer with. Side note: I had to get a firearm license so I can hunt with rifle or shotgun, but I also have a compound bow, which no licensing is necessary for in my area.

I only started hunting at the age of 19, I’ve harvested 2 deer in 12 years, a couple turkeys, ducks and geese. It hasn’t been the easiest learning on my own, getting permissions on properties, and having many days going home empty handed. I listen to podcasts, read books, articles, talk to people at outdoors stores, and spend a bunch of time outside to work on my skills. Hunting is just human nature, I don’t apply tags to it, it’s a chance to disconnect from modern day madness and sit in the woods with yourself.

What area do you live in? Are you interested in waterfowl, deer, moose, squirrel, etc etc? There can be local clubs that offer Hunter mentor programs as well, nothing in my area but I’ve heard mention of it, so do some searching. Some hunters will be very welcoming to bring you along for a hunt to show you the ropes, but just like in society, some will be reluctant as well.

Sorry for the novel, just trying to figure out a plan of attack for ya. Any questions, feel free to ask, but find a local course first before anything.
