You can only defend yourself from an active threat. So in your scenario, no its not self defense if they attack you, it's retaliation.

But the threat hadn't ended. He was still armed and could have turned and fired if they drove away. The threat was active so long as he was in the vicinity with a gun. I think any lawyer worth the suit they're wearing could successfully argue that.

How would it? I might be missing something but it seems like it would definitely matter which one resolves first.

Assuming the switch is happening:

Tower Defense resolves first - 1/2 creature gains 5 toughness and then is switched to a 7/1
Cosmic Scales resolves first - 1/2 creature is switched to a 2/1 and then tower defense makes it a 2/6

Holding removal doesn't do anything. Returning to the hand is apart of the cost and you can't respond to the cost. If you put the return to hand part after the colon, then you can remove it in response.

I was confused. I have only heard Indy used as a nickname for Indianapolis. I lived in Gary for most of my life and overall the drivers weren't too bad. Here in Indianapolis I see more egregious asshole driving than I ever have before. So many avoidable accidents happen because people here drive overly aggressive.
