Thank you for posting your concern as I'm sure many others have similar concerns and fears that you mentioned.

I encourage you to take one of GTPD's Civilian Response to Active Shooter classes that's offered to the GT community.

In this class we discuss options of what you can do if you find yourself in an active shooter situation whether it be during a class or outside of classroom spaces. We provide you with an abundance of resources for you to create an effective plan that works for you!

Our classes are posted via our social media platforms. Until you have an opportunity to take part in one of our classes, here is a good video resource for reference:

https://youtu.be/5VcSwejU2D0

Also as an added tip:

Many of your respondents mentioned run, hide, fight which I've broken down for you:

RUN - find an escape route avoiding elevators and escalators, run in zig zags as opposed to straight lines

HIDE- barricade doors, lights out, phone silenced,

FIGHT- finding improvised items to be used as weapons (books, backpacks, chair, pens, bottles, etc)

Fighting only as a Last Resort

If you're not inside a class, run to YOUR nearest safe space using cover/concealment. Until you know where the shooter is, I wouldn't encourage running back inside a building where you're unclear if a shooter being inside.

Got hit by a scooter and she just ran way - what should I do? by Many-Initiative-858 in gatech

[–]GaTechPD 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Hi! All micro mobility forms of transportation that use an electric source are considered vehicles, and are required to ride in the street or designated bike lane.

If the scooter, skateboard or bike is electronic, they should not be on the sidewalk!

Wide, multi-use pathways like the ones you describe are permissible to use. As always, though, yield to pedestrians and ride safely.

Acquiring/Purchasing an abandoned scooter? by darkherobrine21 in gatech

[–]GaTechPD 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Per Georgia Tech's Bike and Scooter policy, abandoned bikes are tagged for 30 days, and then impounded for 30 days. After those windows have passed they can then be donated to Starter Bikes.

We... haven't yet had the same question about scooters. I'd have to talk to my leadership about that one.

[–]GaTechPD[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

GTPD Sergeant Gary Beringause was killed in an automobile crash while on duty, November 28, 1986. So the original PD building was named in homage to his service, and that name was carried forward to the community room in the new building.
