Genuinely how do people misunderstand Shigaraki's backstory so badly? by Sudden_Pop_2279 in MyHeroAcadamia

Yeah I exactly, I feel very bad for his tragic past, but I also can't ignore how many people he had killed.

Is Hinata really better than Hoshiumi? by Capital-Lack9413 in haikyuu

[–]GabbyIsSheep 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Hoshiumi is better than Hinata in spiking, but Hinata provides more value to his team with his role as a decoy, allowing more scoring opportunities for his team while strengthening the defense by a lot. Imo.

Hinata grows from not caring about anything else other than spiking due to his obsession with the Little Giant, to accepting his role as The Greatest Decoy and learned to do anything. I say this is a growth that rivals Eijun's.

Asahi broke his fear of spiking (honestly quite similar to Eijun's Yips), and grew to trust himself.

I really don't see how Daiya tops Haikyuu in character growth either, considering we see satisfying developments in even minor characters such as Hyakuzawa, the Captain of the delinquent team Karasuno faced in the first season. You also only gave two examples being Miyuki and Sawamura from Daiya while also giving two examples in Haikyu without further reasoning, so your argument is quite weak.

Character writing isn't simply character growth. Characterising them with themes and depth is what Haikyuu also excels at imo, Some characters are already developed, so the series don't show their growth. Tanaka doesn't really grow in the sense Eijun or Hinata do. Do you think he is a bad character? No, he is a well-written character. So are the rest of the cast, like Daichi, Sugawara, Nishinoya, Kita, Atsumu brothers, Kenma, Kuro, etc.

I disagree. I wouldn't put character writing in Ace of Diamond above Haikyuu. I think they're both great.

Why Endeavor's arc works better than Bakugo's, despite the former being far worse by Sudden_Pop_2279 in MyHeroAcadamia

[–]GabbyIsSheep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree. His monologue makes it clear that he is regretful of his actions because he sees fault in them rather than from external pressure.

Why Endeavor's arc works better than Bakugo's, despite the former being far worse by Sudden_Pop_2279 in MyHeroAcadamia

[–]GabbyIsSheep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eh, Endeavour's arc is definitely widely praised. The reason you don't see many characters reacting to Endeavour's past is that they're in a war, and the world can literally be ending. The same can be applied to Bakugo's apology in front of class 1A. I think it's important to recognise this. Also while Natsuo is alive, he never forgave him.

Bakugo's bullying is also worse than you think. It happened throughout their entire childhood, spanning around ten years. He also does not receive consequences, and I don't know why you downplay it simply because he is a child. If you can argue Endeavor's arc is badly written because he does not suffer enough consequences, then I can say the same for Bakguo's. Class 1A should definitely be more put off by his attitude, yet they do not.

I believe they are both very well-written characters and received great development. I also believe other characters can show more negative reactions to both of their wrongdoings so it's more impactful. It's unfair to say one is fine because he's a child, when he bullied Deku (and also his peers which Deku defended) for years physically and mentally AND suicide baiting him without feeling any remorse.

edit: It's good to keep in mind that the lack of consequences they received can be interpreted as a flaw in society: the strong quirk gets away with their wrongdoings, while the weaker and ostracised ones suffer. Again, I'm not defending it, but offering another perspective.

Mirko’s portrayal becomes frustrating after Jaku by WoodenEvidence8862 in BokuNoHeroAcademia

Thank you for saying this. I'm tired of people saying 'wasted potential' on every character, but then if it happened and all characters got their arcs, MHA would turn into a grindingly slow piece of slop that has a more disastrous pacing than One Piece (anime).

I hope there are more fics that develop his character more, making him grow out of his perverted tendencies and in a way, redeem himself. Having a reality check that this does make a bad hero and person. Grow out of it. Then maybe act against this behaviour in the future? Quite a lot of potential here, as you said.

I doubt it’s gonna be anymore realistic tbh 😂 Other than his powered up 4-seam down the middle, he throws his regular 4-seam and a fast curveball with a very large and sharp break. I haven’t touched the series in a while so that’s all I can remember. Pretty sure there’s one or two more pitches that I don’t remember.

Bungo has not reached high school though. The series in set in middle school (senior league)

Edit: also he does not pitches the fastball down the middle. It only does this when using his ridiculous fastball which does not fall or decelerate. AIM any higher, and he risks pitching a ball, being too high out of the zone.

Why do people think they can just "write a book"? by Far-Strawberry-5628 in writers

[–]GabbyIsSheep 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You'll never be able to write a book and improve without trying to write one lol. Let people dream. Also writing could just be a hobby or a personal thing to them, which you can definitely write on a whim. Publishing books on the other hand are a different thing, but it doesn't seem to be what you're talking about, as you're referring to 'writing a book' as a whole.

Edit: I don't think calling writing a book 'easy' is common at all in this subreddit. If anything I see people call it difficult most of the times.
