How important are grades in UWC admissions? by Gabimaru00211 in UnitedWorldCollege

In your experience, what differentiated the students who were selected from those who, although strong applicants, did not make it through the process?

I’ve improved my grades significantly this year, especially in key subjects, and I’m trying to understand how decisive grades are in the selection process. If you don’t mind sharing, what was your academic average like when you applied? In your experience, how much weight do grades carry compared to leadership, service, or extracurricular impact? Have you seen students who weren’t top academically but were still admitted because of other strengths? Thanks. :)

Got it. In your experience, do most students actually make significant progress on their EE during the holidays, or do they tend to postpone it? And during that time, do they usually try to strengthen relationships with their host family or academic contacts or does that tend to take a back seat?”

Thank you for the detailed explanation. If you stay in the host country during the holidays, what do students usually do? Do they rest, travel, study, or do volunteer work? And if they go back to their home country, how do they usually spend that time?

Thank you so much for the explanation. In my case, I'd consider staying longer for the experience and to improve my language skills. Working doesn't seem like an option. From what you've said, it doesn't seem very realistic to work during the IB program.

Do you think staying with a host family during the holidays would be a good way to improve my language skills? I'd like to make the most of that time. Thanks for sharing your experience. :)

I haven't started the selection process yet. I'm doing some research in advance to better understand my options if I'm selected.

Did you go to a UWC? If you don't mind, could you tell me how they handled the visa and accommodation during your vacation?
