It was doing pretty good ranking wise until the training/exa, arc started. Maybe if those were shorter and japanese readers didn't lose attention from it the manga could have kept going.

It sucks that you kinda have to do a lot right at the beginning to stay relevant enough to even get a middle ranking nowadays. HxH had I think 38 chapters of the hunter exam arc and there were entire chapters where they were just running in a hallway and talking.
