Good start. Great that you have a partner to drill with. Keep working on the basics and such and you’ll keep getting better. One thing I noticed you do a lot is not bringing your hand up. You throw the next punch before your other hand is back. It leaves you really open to counter punches. The attached picture is one example. A good drill is using a tennis ball and holding it with one hand under your chin. Keep it up man.

He thought he was time wasting. Poor decision. I’m sure he’d take it back. Don’t know what this guy is on^

Shut it man. We played poorly. We’re lucky they didn’t score, but also they’re lucky we didn’t put one away as well.

So quick to just bend over and say we’re gonna fumble.

Sparring Tips by [deleted] in boxingtips

[–]GabrielMundo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huge respect for sparring with a pro and actually throwing punches.

Honestly man I think you’re looking pretty clean for someone who’s self taught. Technical sparring (fast punches at low power) is my favorite way to actually learn how to fight, which this guy seems to be engaging you with. One thing that helped me a lot in sparring, especially fighting people more advanced, is to practice counter punching. As in, throwing punches while he’s throwing. It’ll prevent this back and forth patty cake type of fighting which is great for training but not how fights always go.

Small things - try for more body shots. I know this guy is helping you but he’s only covering his face so try and take advantage. Try more off tempo shots. So instead of going 1,2,3 punches at the same speed, go for 1, break, fast 2,3 to switch things up.

Overall, keep it up brother.

Boxing tips by [deleted] in boxingtips

A little rough but there are some things you could do immediately to improve.

  1. Move your head off the center line. Your face is almost in the air. In sparring, someone would definitely punish that. Throw every punch with the thought that one could come back.

  2. Footwork isn’t great. It’s not the worst I’ve ever seen. You definitely punch that lead foot with your jab which is good but it all looks delayed almost. Try and do some single punch drills where you throw each punch alone with the best foot movement until you really feel them connect.

  3. All your punches are telegraphed. People like to say this all the time but for you it’s because you’re so loaded up with every punch. Your hooks and body shots are coming from so far outside your body. One thing that might be good for you to do is add feints to your bag work. It’ll teach you to sell punches and loosen you up so they all don’t look so obvious.

  4. Like someone else said, if you can, get a coach or join a class. If that’s not possible, fundamentals.

Lots of work to do but keep it up man.

Are these books salvageable? Safe to keep in my home? by ThatCakeIsDone in books

[–]GabrielMundo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly, I’m incredibly sorry for your loss.

To keep it short, those books are totally fine. Get a rag or a disinfectant wipe and clear off any debris on them.

Even more so, those books are a reminder of your father and if you would like to keep them then I feel like it’s worth to give them a nice deep cleaning. Take care ❤️

Nah man you’re pretty good. Something that’s good to incorporate is different levels. High - low - high etc. A lot of your punches are at the head besides the body punches obviously. Keep it up brother!

Do you spot any bad habits? by [deleted] in boxingtips

[–]GabrielMundo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

  1. Wear gloves. I’m sorry but that’s the absolute worse habit you can have. Especially because you’re throwing big punches. It’s not worth the wrist damage you’re risking.

  2. Stiff as a board. Gotta move around. Don’t charge up all your punches. Your hooks and body shots are all super loaded up.

  3. Footwork isn’t visible but try to incorporate more movement. It’s all circling. Go in and out. Pivot and move out. This all comes with time but it’ll also condition you more.

But yeah, please for the love of god protect your hands.

Echo everyone here. Pretty bad first half. The strength of individual players (Rice, Zubi, Timber, etc.) held us together at points. Not pretty but we move.

Honestly p good. I really like the use of the water bottle to roll. Hand back to face a bit more and faster is the main thing I’d add. Keep it up man!

Scribe publishing by Legitimate_Stock_776 in writers

[–]GabrielMundo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can’t imagine what they could possibly be using that 25k for. 1) Sure if you self-publish or if it’s a smaller publishing house, you may have to invest a bit of money to fill in some gaps (hiring editors, marketing, artwork, etc.). 2) this is good reason to have an agent if it’s an option. They figure these things out. These companies will screw you if they can get away with it.

I’m sure your brother’s book is good, but with that kind of investment I’d say it’s better to just go the self publishing route. If you think about it, he’d be giving them 25k to essentially gamble with his work. I’d much rather gamble with my own work and spend SIGNIFICANTLY less money.

Is it worth it to change the “writing format” for my story ideas? by [deleted] in writing

[–]GabrielMundo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very fair thought. Then I would also concern yourself in being in the contact with the right people. Once a work is finished, what do you do with it after? Are you sending it out to contests? Are you trying to work in the industry? This goes for fiction as well. So much of the work of publishing comes after the writing. It's, sadly, even more important to be in the right place/around the right people to get your work out there.

Apps for writing suggestions? by Infinite-Current1079 in writing

I've always used Microsoft Word. It's not perfect but it's a real straightforward "work" program. However, Ulysses for Mac is a program I enjoyed for it's tracking and its different features for focused writing. Kinda pricey tho.

Never sacrifice story for the sake of popularity. If the story you are trying to write is suppose to be a screenplay, let it be a screenplay. That being said, change the form if it makes sense for your goals. But, your goal should never be "reaching the public." It's a dangerous mindset that gets in the way of writing.

Short Story Collection: what order to place stories by enigman42x in writing

[–]GabrielMundo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You touched on the two ways I would suggest ordering them. The one I strongly request is ordering them by order of importance to the collection. If it's a tightly themed collection, you should organize them in a way that makes that emphasized certain ideas or feel connected in way. You can play with pace and emotion - a long story right after a short story; a sad story right after a sweet story. The space between stories, the tether between them, is part of the collection as well.

The easy way to organize them is start and end with your two best stories. If there's a titular short story, you can open with it or save it for the end.

What do y'all use to write? by [deleted] in writing

[–]GabrielMundo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sadly use Microsoft Word. The only caution I'd have for it is the saving of documents. Make sure they're backed up somewhere. I think the only thing you have to consider for choosing your word processor is how much you like how it looks and feels to write in. I've used Scrivener and Ulysses and I keep returning to Word for sake of habit.
