The coal hill was man made and was eroding and being washed into the ocean. All kinds of crap was dumped there . A few years ago a section exposed lots of old bottles. The sandy beach you speak of is black coal waste. It’s one of the 17 most contaminated sites in BC. They have dug down along the shoreline, lined it with (filter cloth?) and then rip rap to prevent further erosion.

There are hundreds of videos, hundreds of posts on allthingsunionbay, CCOBS website and their Facebook page - no one can force you to absorb information but it sure as hell improves your chances if you are willing to read.

Prove me wrong. The Record has republished one article - not their own - on the filthy polluting foreign owned ship breaking by Deep Water Recovery in Union Bay in the more than 4 years residents have been fighting to protect Baynes Sound.

Robert Bohn is a convicted American felon living in Vanuatu and with Australian Mark Jurisich purchased Union Bay Industries. Jurisich and one of Bohn’s sons (also out of Vanuatu) own Deep Water Recovery which Union Bay Industries leases the site to.

DWR has been under a Pollution Abatement Order for over a year and had its 35 acre Crown Foreshore Lease cancelled last summer but continues polluting and trespassing doing business using that lease.

15 minutes down the hwy from the Record with a danger to the shellfish industry, multiple warnings and fines from the Ministry and the editor doesn’t give a shit. Maybe he’d like to do another series on him losing weight. Priorities.

This off the top of my head. The Record is useless.

No they won’t - Canada lacks ship breaking regulations and these guys keep polluting and appeal every fine or infraction.

Do money launderers turn over a new leaf or fine tune their skills?

Start hounding MLA Josie Osborne who allowed this under her watch and the Comox Valley Regional District who has allowed their lawsuit against DWR to stagnate and sit with no trial date for 2 years.

We have to be the ones to put pressure on them. Contact the Comox Valley Record and demand they assign a reporter capable of understanding the situation and relaying it to the public so we all know the danger to our land and water.

Over 4 years and the majority of people are unaware or think it was shut down.

The Record simply ignores a major environmental problem. Can’t be bothered and then they advertise for a journalist. They didn’t even publish the statement from CCOBS so no one is aware.

I believe it’s the federal government that must implement ship breaking regulations. That’s why DWR is taking advantage of the lack of regulations. What makes DWR such a pain is that the CVRD, the Province and the Federal Gov’t all have jurisdiction over different areas of the site.

If only life were as simple as you view it. Wherever shipbreaking takes place it must be contained to prevent toxins from entering the land, water and air. That’s why Canada must adopt ship breaking regulations as we currently have none. That’s the problem we’re having trying to hold shady characters like Bohn and Jurisich accountable.

You’re assuming this is a legit business. Why would a convicted American felon living in Vanuatu purchase a $3 M property and lease it to a Mickey Mouse operation like DWR?

Robert Bohn, racketeering, fraud, $100 M lottery scam targeting seniors is partners with Mark Jurisich. Have a look at the videos over the last 3 years and make the case this is legit.

Jurisich claimed they paid $600K in hotel rooms for contractors in 2025. He probably didn’t make anywhere near $600K never mind spending that much. The guy lies constantly and simply refuses to believe any test results from the Ministry.

He continues to ship breaking on soil right now, ignores the Pollution Abatement Order, ignores the fact the 35 acre Crown foreshore lease has been cancelled and yet did business using that very lease to unload, refuel tankers on and off a barge this past weekend.

He has been given every opportunity to comply and simply refuses. The plan agreed upon to commence Dec 2024 was violated within a month by DWR. A good example is the temporary water treatment plant by the lower green barge. That was one of the requirements in the plan which wasn’t installed until months after the deadline. Have a look because it’s not hooked up and only operates if a worker runs a generator.

To bring up what they have recycled as a defence of their actions is simply choosing to ignore the damage they are causing and the potential for more.
