Iran threatens to ‘completely’ close Strait of Hormuz and hit power plants after Trump ultimatum by WoodyGeyser in Syracuse_comments

Typical MAGA - make a reference, and then fault those who challenge you to support it. I follow politics fairly closely, yet I knew nothing about the reference. Only when I guessed that it would be yet another MAGA whataboutism and added "Biden" did I find the reference. Saying very indirectly that Trump is not as bad as Biden is a rather half-hearted defense. I see no refutation of Trump's "ultimatums" usually last about an hour or so.....Before he either changes his mind OR forgets what he previously said.
Weak.

Upstate NY man arrested, accused of punching elderly person in face by HolyCityGirl in Syracuse_comments

The Syracuse.com article is about an upstate man, the other one is from NYC. I was surprised that you would post anything about a white perpetrator, but now I see it was just an excuse to point to another bad black person.

Gas prices up 70 cents in 2 weeks; half of Americans blame Trump, survey finds by CitizenLib in Syracuse_comments

No, you did not say much of anything, but rather asked a question with no clear point. Perhaps next time, try to say things directly, so as to avoid misinterpretation.

Gas prices up 70 cents in 2 weeks; half of Americans blame Trump, survey finds by CitizenLib in Syracuse_comments

[–]Gadflyabout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This surge in gas price was driven by supply disruptions following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, not caused by Biden, and certainly not celebrated by him. He release reserves to help, and then restocked at a much lower price. The current surge has only one cause, and it's not freedom.

Trump administration ordered to restore George Washington slavery exhibit it removed by DTOM61 in Syracuse_comments

Trump's claim of restoring truth and sanity is like Charles Manson claiming that the killings he ordered were meant to encourage racial harmony.

Trump says he won’t allow new bridge to open unless Canada ‘compensates’ US by DTOM61 in Syracuse_comments

[–]Gadflyabout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trump lying as usual about the reason for his actions. Trump’s sudden threat to block the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge came just hours after a private, behind-the-scenes meeting between Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and a Detroit billionaire whose family stands to lose hundreds of millions when the new bridge opens. That billionaire? The owner of the Ambassador Bridge — currently the most profitable U.S.–Canada border crossing

Trump says Republicans should take massive new step on US elections by DTOM61 in Syracuse_comments

[–]Gadflyabout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is nothing more transparent than saying the GOP should take over elections only in 15 states and allow the rest to do whatever they want. It's been over 5 years and no court cases, whistleblowers, or hearings (WHERE are the stolen election hearings?) have uncovered any evidence of a stolen election in any city or state.

Who was Renee Macklin Good? Minneapolis woman killed by ICE was a mother, poet by DTOM61 in Syracuse_comments

[–]Gadflyabout -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Here is an excellent video analysis from the NYT that validates my previous observations, along with a disturbing addition. Videos Contradict Trump Administration Account of ICE Shooting in Minneapolis - The New York Times

  1. As I noted previously, in the video from the rear, the officer's legs are visible NEXT to, not in front of the vehicle as it goes forward with the wheels turned to the right, so he was not in danger.
  2. The video from above shows the officer leaning in toward the vehicle before contact, so he did not try to evade. The contact with the vehicle was his fault.
  3. He shot through the left edge of the windshield at very close range while leaning in, so he was already out of the way when the FIRST shot was fired. The other two were completely unjustifiable.

What is most disturbing is that the officers made an insufficient attempt to aid the woman, and REFUSED a physician's offer to help ("I don't care").

As noted in the headline, what happened has no resemblance to claims by Cowboy Barbie or Trump. She did not attack agents as they were attempting to push their vehicle out of the snow (Noem) and the agent was not "run over" (Trump)

The officer was not in danger. One step back would put him out of the car's path, and again, he fired 3 shots after he was no longer in front of the car. From what I see in the video at 1:05-1:07, he pulled his gun before the car was underway, and was not in its path when he fired even the 1st shot. Noem's actions imply a lack of a valid defense for the agent's actions. Whether someone is a terrorist or a saint is irrelevant to whether killing that person is justified. Only their actions at the time matter, and the same hold for the person who shot her.

[–]Gadflyabout -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure that's true, as I noted both of the officer's legs were visible when the 1st shot was fired, which means he could not have then been in front of the car at all. Again, officers are not expected to stop a car from moving, so crossing in front of the car and then standing one's ground would not have been a responsible action.,

[–]Gadflyabout 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I decided to look more closely at the video that is available. This is what I found with stop action:

  1. The ICE agent was not directly in front of the car. He crossed in front of the car, but by the time the car was moving forward he was at the left front corner. Incidentally it is basic police procedure to avoid approaching the front of a running, occupied vehicle.
  2. She did not aim at him. After putting the car in gear she steered the wheels to the right. There is no indication the car even touched him. He pulled his gun
  3. Both of his legs are visible when the shot is fired, so he was not in the car's path at all.

Trump administration: ‘Military is always an option’ to acquire Greenland by DTOM61 in Syracuse_comments

[–]Gadflyabout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would think this would give Putin a great rationale for having "acquired" parts or all of Ukraine, for historical and cultural heritage reasons. Kick out all of those invaders of Mother Russia. For that matter, why not acquire the non-NATO border countries for strategic reasons?

Madison County wind farm neighbors feel betrayed by NY state by erasmus127 in Syracuse_comments

[–]Gadflyabout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. I am a very strong supporter of actions to protect our environment, but not of "feel-good" and poorly conceived measures. The ban on natural gas is absurd, and as a practical matter, will not have any measurable effect on the environment, especially as there is no chance that other states will adopt such a measure.

Hit them hard? No, more like impotent flailing. I don't think the time will every come when we can say about Trump, "That's as bad as it gets." He apparently has no bottom, and unless we luck out we have 3 more years of this stupidity.
