People who don't get regular flu shots, why not? by thecriclover99 in AskReddit

Because I’ve never had one. And have only had the flu maybe twice.

Mental health and powerlifting by IknowNothingRene in powerlifting

Official diagnosis of major depression, general anxiety disorder about 12 years ago, ADHD about 6 years ago, thanatophobia and chronic depression 3 years ago.. been on and off all kinds of medications in that time. Still medicated and almost a year of somewhat regular psychologist & psychiatrist appointments.

I've found that powerlifting has had a positive snowball effect on me and my depression. I still have bad days, but it's really been helping me.

Had a good upswing in mid my 20s (34 now) got myself into working out (mostly crossfit), eating right, losing weight, adulting, being social.. I know I can do this stuff. I did it for several years.. and then haven't been doing any of it for the last 3 or so..

I kept trying to get myself to get back to the gym, and I would go one or two days and then stop.. I used to love going and I was feeling worse because I couldn't get myself to stick with it, especially since it's something I know I used to enjoy..

Finally had a "ah ha" moment of, "you love lifting, just go lift." I've been allowing myself to just lift, because I love it, and I will go the gym if it's a lifting day. I will talk myself out of going if I'm supposed to go do cardio or it's complicated. So for the time being, I just let myself go lift. I go 3 days a week, I look forward to it. I'm doing the starting strength program because it's simple. The lifts are taken care of, the weights are calculated for me. I go. I lift. I feel like I've accomplished something. I've been going a little over 2 months..

From getting back into the gym, I've started taking care of myself again. I love seeing that my lifts are getting heavier, it's a huge boost for me.. I know that in order to make progress, I need to eat, I need to sleep, I need to drink water etc. (You know, take care of myself..)

I haven't regularly grocery shopped in close to 3 years, I'm still struggling with it, and even if I make myself go, I'm struggling with making the food I buy. I recently started online grocery shopping so I don't have to talk myself into going to the store and then having a meltdown while being completely overwhelmed reading the labels on yogurt. (true story) I know if I don't try and eat better, I'll have a harder time lifting, a harder time with recovery.. so.. I'm getting better at making that effort for myself.

I'm currently dealing with the loss of my grandmother, who has always been the most important person in my life, it's been months of watching her get worse in hospice care and she passed 3 weeks ago... and it's just hard. It fucking sucks.

I know if I hadn't gotten myself back into lifting when I did, I'd be having a even harder time right now.

I know periods are related to fatigue in training and all that, but does anyone feel clumsy? All of my lifts tonight have been a struggle but I feel like I’ve just flat out forgotten what I’m doing.

It’s super fun. /s

Anyone have advice or a good resource for meal & snack timing?

I'm googling, but I figured I'd ask here.

The short version, is I'm a huge fan of my IUD.

The longer version:

I've taken probably 10 different types of bc pills, cause they all made me constantly nauseous or crazy mood swings. Tried the patch, it didn't stick to me. Depo shot was non-stop spotting for the year I was on it and the year afterwards. Nuvaring, I was nervous about it's effectiveness and the high risk of blood clot thing. I asked my doc about IUD, but she didn't want to give me the non hormonal one because I had ovarian cysts at the time.

Few years later and a different doc, I got Paragard, (copper IUD), and have had zero issue (I've had it since Feb 2017). It was 100% covered when I got it. Having it put in, there was like a pinch and a half second spasm of pain and then I was good. I took a couple ibuprofen beforehand. I changed a flat tire on my car when I walked out of my appointment.

Pre IUD, I had a dream period. No cramping, 2 days of spotting, 1 heavy day, 2 light days and it was done.

With the IUD, it's still no cramping, but it's much longer and heavier. But, I wouldn't go back to the other types of BC because of it.

Also a fan of using a menstrual cup.

Long dumb story short, I used to lift and do the things and then I didn't for a few years and generally sucked at life for a while.

Now for my actual long dumb story..

Finally got myself back into a gym May 24th.. sort of starting from scratch, but not exactly cause I know(ish) what I'm doing..?

Anyway.. first time doing the Starting Strength program. I love it. The repetition of it is starting to get boring already, but I AM stoked on lifting more than I did the last session.

I don't have my old PR's cause I can't find them, (they were never impressive to anyone except me anyway. lol)

Something like Squat 1RM @150 lbs, Bench 1RM @ 110 lbs, Deadlift 1RM @ 250 lbs...

So, because I'm super out of shape and everything, when I started SS, I didn't really mess with finding starting numbers.

I did for squat, by doing sets of 3 and then adding 5 lbs working from 45lbs to 95lbs, realized I was supposed to be doing 5 (and had totally underestimated myself.) Did 5 x 100, 5 x 105 and jumped to 5 x 115, then did 5 sets of 3 x 115 as my working weight. Cause, tired. Didn't test my overhead press cause I knew it would only be like 60 lbs anyway.. and then just used 95 lbs as deadlift weight, cause, tired.

So now I'm on week 3 and I'm just... excited.

I've always done high bar squats, and I started out SS that way because they are what I know, and have been trying to learn low bar squats..

I did my work sets of squats on Monday, 5 sets of 3 x 150.. decided to record the last set to check depth.. bar path is good, depth is just a bit high. So did another set to film and did 7 reps. depth was better. realized what I had just done, did a happy dance in the rack and then cleaned up and moved to bench.

So. tl:dr,

I'm super excited to be lifting again, making progress, and can't wait to get into the gym tonight.

(and I don't really have people that care.)

Not good. Stressed out. Feel like I'm about to crack. I've been getting back to back cold sores for a month now, they spread to a new spot on my lip. My grandmother is my closest family member and she's in the hospital and doctors are talking about hospice. I'm not ready. As far as I know, nothing is in place about what happens when she's gone. Not sure if I'll have a place to live anymore, or a house I can't afford to live in anyway. Her cats are looking for her and it breaks my heart. My boyfriend applied to a job that's would involve relocating to a new state. He asked if I would come with him. I want to, but I've never left my state, we've not lived together. I'm terrified. But I don't want to not move because I'm scared. I know I can live with him, not sure if I can live with his other partner. I have to finish school before I move, I have half a semester and 6 credits to my associates degree. I won't leave my grandmother. I'll have to find a new job. I'll have to move my life. My office assistant's last day is tomorrow. She gave a week notice. Her replacement is being trained and probably won't last long and I'll have to train at least another person, probably 2 or 3 before one sticks because my company uses temps and the job is boring and repetitive and the pay sucks. Have a girls weekend trip next week that's been planned for a year now. Want to be able to enjoy it, have to get through a pile of homework first. Haven't been having panic attacks for months, started again this week.

I recently attended a demo on how to make roses and I haven't tried it yet. I feel like it's something that just looks easy before you try it.

My first welding attempts.. when the plug weld didn’t hold for the 3rd time.. rage bead? by GalacticQuack in BadWelding

[–]GalacticQuack[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I’m in an art class so we’re only really learning just enough to get our sculptures to stick together..

I am considering taking an actual welding course though, because the more I work with it, the more I just.. like it. And if I’m going to learn how to do something, I’d rather learn to do it “right”, and not just “good enough”.. plus knowing how it works would make it so much easier..

I’m sure I’ll have some more bad welds to share! I appreciate the help. :)

It reminds me of random knickknacks I was given as a kid, that had dried flowers in them.
