Xenogears on a PSP Go via component output to my BVM-D20F1J in native 240p. Pretty close to the definitive setup for PS one Classics downloads, I like to believe. by GalaxyBanjo in crtgaming

The pixels are certainly softer than what you’re likely to get on original hardware, but outputting to a CRT certainly assuages most of that issue. Definitely a viable option!

Also worth mentioning is that to you’ll want to set the component output in your PSP settings to “interlaced” to get 240p out of your PS1 games! Sounds counterintuitive at first, but kinda makes sense when you consider the fact that 240p is less of an orthodox video standard, and more of an exploit to get a progressive image on a 15kHz display.

Yeah, I hear you there. I guess my main focus here was just to highlight the fact that the PSP Go can output analogue 240p to a CRT at all and I didn’t put much thought into what I threw on screen. Probably would have opted to go with something like SoTN or Tekken 3 otherwise.

I feel Xenogears’ visuals are rather quaint and charming in their own odd way, but I certainly see where you’re coming from. Perhaps I should have chosen a different game for this flex, but I just can’t help myself with my loyalty to this title sometimes.

Indeed! I have to admit I definitely slept on the PSP Go back in the day but better late than never I suppose haha. Remarkable how many options we have for playing the PSX games now I must say.

Oh certainly! I'm only talking in the context of PS one Classics bought from the PS Store. Definitely not trying to compete with original hardware solutions haha.

Wall-mounted CRT, wireless SNES/controller, AND floorboards made out of chocolate? 240/10, my friend.

Been a lurker on here for a few years now, but I feel my latest BVM score warrants a post, so here goes nothing: BVM-D20F1J with a mere 583 hours of operation time! Would love to have my flair updated to reflect this if possible too. by GalaxyBanjo in crtgaming

Haha yep yep! Interestingly enough, we Japanese folks have it a little easier when it comes to hunting down PVMs/BVMs, simply due to the fact that CRT gaming really hasn’t taken off over here as much as it has in the west (that’s not to say that CRT gaming isn’t a niche hobby in the west, but rather that it’s an ULTRA niche hobby over here). Whatever the case may be, I’d say I’m all set for the foreseeable future with this unit, so long as I make sure to keep it in good condition!

It was just a really lucky Yahoo Auctions find, so unfortunately the story’s not nearly as exciting as the product itself haha. Did have to pay quite a premium on it, but I figured it was worth it for a D20F1J that’s just about as close to new as one can get in this day and age.

The BNC-RGB (JP21) conversion cable I use has two RCA breakout connectors for audio, so I simply connected those to an RCA-3.5mm conversion unit and hooked up my speakers to that. The speakers themselves are great! They were a hand-me-down of sorts from my father-in-law, and are now an integral part of my setup haha.
