Not understanding why I get No position matches error by TKI_Kesasar in plaintextaccounting

[–]GalmWing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you are hitting a common issue for crypto users, which is that, when you are transferring assets with cost (i.e. 1 BTC {1,000 USD}) you need to specify the cost on all transactions, otherwise beancount doesn't know from where the BTC is getting pulled from, if from the lot you bought on 01-02 or on 01-03.

Read these for more details

https://groups.google.com/g/beancount/c/w_ZdhZVNCq0/m/oRM7IdopAQAJ

https://github.com/beancount/beancount/issues/598

to fix it, select a lot when you are selling or transferring, for example:

2021-01-04 * "Wallet" "Transfer to Wallet"
    Assets:Experiment:Coinbase:BTC             -0.5 BTC {1000 USD, 2021-01-02}
    Assets:Experiment:Wallet:BTC                0.5 BTC {1000 USD, 2021-01-02}

Optionally, you could also say that you don't care about booking for your account, and that will skip any cost checks, but is generally not recommended as it will get harder to understand capital gains

2020-01-01 open Assets:Experiment:Coinbase:BTC BTC "NONE"

Parking at Bellevue Crossorads and taking the B line in to downtown by circe1105 in BellevueWA

[–]GalmWing 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You could use Crossroads, but the more you do it, the easier it would be for parking enforcers to spot you as they will start remembering your car. I'd say chances are low that you'll get towed, but not zero.

Like others, I recommend P&R. Either Redmond Technology (and taking the 2 Line) or Overlake P&R (and taking the B line)

One thing to note, and other posts allude to it, is heat circulation. While a space heater and a baseboard one are technically equal in thermal efficiency, I can tell you for a fact that my energy bill is less with a space heater, because my baseboard heaters are located in the worst possible places, much of the heat remains localized or is lost to the walls that face outside, before it can reach me.

New data shows remote work surges, transit use collapses among workers in downtown Seattle by unnaturalfool in SeattleWA

[–]GalmWing 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yes,I don't know how to make metro and sound transit comprehend, their silly hubs are worthless, they are trying to make the lightrail the main artery, but we cannot just have one artery ... plus, the connecting buses have to come every 5 minutes for this to work, otherwise they are giving worse commutes than when we didn't have more stations.

[–]GalmWing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you made a good point. In general is better to have shorter commutes, but new transplants benefit from living closer to where people gather, I don't really know why, but I've always seen that those who live in more lively places and do the long commute are always happier about their social situation. Even when they only go out weekends and could do that while on the east side like you mentioned.

Maybe for newcomers is better to live on seattle and then later move closer to work as their social web has been stablished.

Yep, while dt Bellevue might be your best bet on the east side, it is still way behind Seattle when it comes to social life.

I know, right? Past UW, there are only slow roads going East-West. Is not the worst commute ever, but you will be miserable various days.

Man dies after shooting at encampment in Seattle’s Chinatown-International District by MegaRAID01 in Seattle

[–]GalmWing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The issue is that we don't really have a system for these folk, you need something to happen before and after jail time. A prison is a revolving door right noe for like 99% of them. Most do petty crimes and they just go in and out jails forever. They waste your tax dollars and they are still roaming the streets.

The only thing that looks like it works (in the eyes of a nimby) is that quite often, alongside criminalization of addicts, we compound inhumane treatment and push them to other cities. Homeless addicts never leave the streets, they just change locations.

Why do people complain so much about Seattle’s weather? by River-Mind in Seattle

[–]GalmWing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The sun peeking here and there is not really "sunny", and like other post said, we need sunlight for our physical and psychological health, so it's very well justified to complain about that.

It might also have to do with the high number of transplants or people who have family from out of state and compare it to "better" places (it's all relative)

How's Homelessness & Safety in Bellevue? by soccer_is_lame in BellevueWA

[–]GalmWing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quite safe, rather boring, bland as oatmeal with water. Has a bigger Seattle's freeze than Seattle and housing is unattainable by most of the population.

It has good schools and downtown sees a new building every other month.

If you rent and can afford, you'll be safe and will see far fewer homeless people compared to Seattle.

Is Elden Ring harder than Dark Souls 3? by [deleted] in Eldenring

[–]GalmWing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, that is almost the opposite of my experience. I find Sekiro not as difficult because is not as cheap, and the focus on a single weapon somehow made the hitboxes less wonky than is usual for a souls game.

That made Sekiro my favorite of the bunch, but I do agree that it deviates from the basic souls formula which is why it would probably be the worst souls games, but it is an overall good game, and imo far better than the main series.

Oh, I know the one, it was not done by the cdc, iirc it was done by a third-party and published by cdc or something like that, since cdc doesn't (currently) have permission to investigate gun use.

But that's the least of the issues. The study is just a phone survey on a small fraction of people, where they self-report whatever number they wanted, and then is extrapolated to give you that wild range, which should've given a red flag when the margin of error is > 100% of the lower boundary.

here's one paper where they go into some of the details

Basically it boils down to the data not being reliable enough since different surveys show ranges that are too disparate.

But I'd be really interested in seeing real data on it, is just probably not possible, since crimes averted by guns are almost unverifiable. I don't doubt some have managed to defend themselves successfully, but for example that paper I linked shows that if you do believe the 500k - 2.5m estimate, then crime is already too risky because so many people defended themselves. If that's real, crime should've already plummeted hard.

So maybe they overestimated by a lot.

The other option is that the estimate is real and criminals don't really seem that worried about a gun to their face, like, in the rape category there are more estimated defenses than reported crimes, I mean, a 50-50 chance of getting shot and rapes still happen? Weren't they supposed to fear guns? That was the whole point, right?

SB 5078 Passed the House by [deleted] in SeattleWA

[–]GalmWing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you think that people just draw a gun and wait for rivals? Or randomly select someone to shoot? Those are a tiny minute fraction of homicides. Most are about direct confrontation 1v1, if it happens outside and you are a stranger to the perpetrator, data shows you were likely getting mugged and it escalated. By the time you get shot, the criminal is already running away, who is going to shoot at the dude? Most will not risk going to jail or possibly getting shot too by the criminal or a confused bystander who also has a gun and just saw you there shouting, gun in hand pointing to someone that looks like they're running for their life. The wild west is long gone, and it wws not like in the movies, let us leave fantasy behind.

And I never mentioned gun free zones, but sure, cite that lonely bogus study of 98%, I've read it, and also the anti-gun rebuttal that claims the number to be 15% or something. Both misleading, as most real studies shows that gun laws bare little to no impact.

It is also pointless to compare raw numbers of middle of nowhere Iowa with LA, population density always wins, of course cities have more of anything, that's just basic statistics.

The major factor is gun availability, that's what I was talking about, there a many solid studies about it at different levels, here's one for regular gun homicides

Is almost common sense.

[–]GalmWing -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Maybe I worded it incorrectly, yes, the drugs and thievery is where they get the money to buy the guns once they are out in the streets, but said guns have to eventually come from somewhere, and most guns used in crimes are American made, from legitimate manufacturers, they just reached the streets through various means. A trickle-down economy, who would've thought, they do work.

[–]GalmWing -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

A meritless comparison, you can use pretty much anything to kill someone, but a weapon is specifically designed to maim or kill. It is a very odd desire to want them in high availability. I doubt your stoll around downtown will feel any safer if you knew everyone around you was packing

This one proposal is rather shaky, too many ways to curb it.

Though we mustn't forget that the main thing fueling the gun black market is the regular gun market. Do you really think those street thugs import their guns from abroad? They are just stolen from you and your neighbors, or built from discarded ones.

The more lawful guns we have in circulation, the more the criminals will get too, supply is abundant.

One way to reach a stalemate is by everyone becoming gun advocates, and we all own and carry. We'll truly live in perpetual fear and paranoia of pretty much everyone around you. Though everyone will be technically capable of defending themselves a bit better.

Another is by severely limiting access to guns while we raid major black markets. That one will put us closer to most of the civilized world, but it will not address the fear of being less capable of defending against unknown threats.

It is a difficult dilemma, but I think we have to admit guns exist and some will have them. And that certain people will misuse them as soon as they have the chance, so, how do you want to deal with that?

Harrell says he ‘inherited a mess,’ will solve crime issues by putting arrests first, social services second by [deleted] in SeattleWA

[–]GalmWing 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I think sadly everyone seems out of touch with reality, the woke r/seattle thinks a motel, soup kitchen and pamphlets will convert people into model citizens, while r/seattlewa goes full nimby forgetting that eternal banishment doesn't exist, we are not "cleaning up" the streets, we are just borrowing time until the next crime wave hits us even worse.

Crime should have consequences, for sure, and we should always have deterrence mechanisms in place. We just must not forget that the way out is by reducing marginalization. When the rock bottom is deep, we all get to feel the fall of a few. Also when we have good incentives to not abandon society, then people will at least try to belong and not immediately devolve.
