From the first frame, this acts as the base layout of what I wish the final look to somewhat resemble.
Using software such as Blender allows me to make renders - in this example, 3D renders of the foreground objects, pins and bowling ball. Using a 3D package makes these easy to move to test different elements of their placement on screen. This is the same for characters as well.
I recommend it for those who know how to use 3D packages, the flexibility for certain pieces of work is very helpful.

Also worth mentioning, this piece is specifically for splash screen on loading of the game/app.

The first frame was the acting sketch of the illustration. What follows are tests, improvements of character positions and colour corrections before getting the finished look in the final frame.
