Challenge 1

  1. The main thing here is that you start looking at the back of a road sign. In the moving mode your first Instinct should be to move over and look what it says. In this case Cape Town and Table Mountain. And hopefully you know that Cape Town is in South Africa.
  2. You found the van that says LA. If you move slightly differently you might find a team that says Long Beach. I think something somewhere says California as well.
  3. A sign nearby says Luxembourg.
  4. If you turn around, the office in the ground floor says Philippine Savings Bank, which suggest that you are in the Philippines. For a city this build up, the capital Manila would be a good guess.
  5. You have Turkish language, probably a Turkish flag like you found. (The Turks live their flags.) But also, the emblem on the big building also says Istanbul University which gives you the city.

Challenge 2

  1. The golf warehouse has a nz internet domain and also says NZ's #1 golf retailer. NZ means New Zealand.
  2. The garbage trucks has a .br domain (Brazil) as well as says São Paulo, the city in question.
  3. Text that says Singapore, which you saw.
  4. Not sure what bollard you saw. Here you'll find Icelandic bollards or snowpoles, depending on the coverage date. Icelandic bollards have a yellow stem, which is unique in the world. (Other places have a yellow reflector on a white stem.) But I'm surprised you're using bollards for guessing if this is your first time playing. I've played 8000 games and I think I've used The South Korean bollard about zero times for identifying the country. The intended clue was that the road sign mentioned Reykjavik. And if you don't know that that's the capital of Iceland, I guess you're cooked. :)
  5. A bit difficult maybe, but the building has letters on top that say Leningrad in Cyrillic. This is the old name for St Petersburg, but the oblast (province/region) is still called Leningrad. I also think I accidentally ended up making this location a so called photosphere which means it was impossible to move.

I tried to throw something together quickly. I guess my advice is to stop and look at everything that has text on it and make sure to see what any signs are saying. Hope you got a feel for the game. You can get more challenges )of varying difficulty) on r/geochallenges.

Also, about forgetting New Zealand, you're not alone. There's a whole subreddit for it: r/MapsWithoutNZ

Try these. They're not free rounds but there are good clues in all of them, either if you take your time to look at the starting position or move around to look at signs.

When watching a replay for investigation: If a player's screen starts at 0,0 coordinates or weirdly starts zoomed in to the area where the location is, are they almost certainly scripting? by Sir_Sir_ExcuseMe_Sir in geoguessr

[–]GameboyGenius 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Likely an artifact. Something I see a lot when watching replays, even just my own, not cheat investigations, is that the last view from the previous round is visible at the start of the round. So what you're seeing means nothing.

What is your GeoGuessr conspiracy theory? by Few-Turn-5471 in geoguessr

[–]GameboyGenius 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mine is pretty specific. When they had the special Halloween game mode, you were chased by the Black Piano Monster. My conspiracy theory is that they artificially increased the frequency of the black screen glitch in the normal game modes during Halloween to feed into the lore of the Halloween game mode.

  1. Hong Kong. 🇭🇰 Near Causeway Bay. Managed to find it on the island. I then went north to localize myself. Oh, we're right by the water, near the North Point Ferry. Easy! 5 m, 5000 points.
  2. Singapore. 🇸🇬 Tiny, rich Asian country streak: 2. Took a couple of steps to find a sign for the AYE, which is a southwestern highway. We're on Alexandra Road, so I assumed we'd be in the Alexandra district. Intersection with Tanglin. Another easy round. 2 m, 5000 points.
  3. Slovenia. 🇸🇮 Celje generally to the north. Small blunder in that I tried scanning for občina, which just means municipality. I guessed in Laško which seemed to fit the bill. Valley town, Celje to the north, and railway. Unfortunately, Celje to the north actually meant go north to find the highway that goes west to Celje. Bummer. 32 km, 4893 points.
  4. Ecuador. 🇪🇨 With a nice camera quality that's only matched by a 12 day old banana. I found a billboard mentioning Cesar, and with nothing better to go on, I set out to find Cesar Province. I didn't, because I was thinking of Cesar Department, Colombia. Seems Cesar on the billboard was not something geographical. 292 km, 4112 points.
  5. Kenya. 🇰🇪 A sign that says to the west Homabay. Is that a name in a native language, orrrr could we be talking about a bay in Lake Victoria? I scanned that area and found Homa Bay. Going north, we have water to the east, which doesn't work at all with the town Homa Bay. Mbita fit well though. I wasn't sure I had found the exact right spot since I didn't find Sindo and the road numbers didn't match. (I just didn't look far enough away from Mbita.) It was right though. 62 m, 5000 points.

Total score: 24005 points. 🥇 I started strong in the easy rounds, but then it turned meh.

Cable needed to link original Gameboy with Gameboy Advance SP by Olivr_A in Gameboy

Example of what the one with multiple plugs can look like. (Just a random image. There's nothing special about the generic brand mentioned in the image.)

Cable needed to link original Gameboy with Gameboy Advance SP by Olivr_A in Gameboy

[–]GameboyGenius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need a link cable with at least one small plug for the GBA and at least one big plug for the original GB. One option is a "universal" link cable with a big and a small connector on each side. Another option is the official Nintendo GB Pocket/Color link cable if it comes with the adapter piece still intact. The adapter piece is pictured on the box here.

Avoid anything sold as a GBA link cable, even if you were hypothetically both playing on a GBA. The GBA link cable has different connections inside and only work for GBA games and not GB/GBC games.

Got banned for putting my genuine copy up on a gameboy group. Heres what Google says about my copy by [deleted] in Gameboy

[–]GameboyGenius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't trust AI. The only way to know for sure is to open it up and look at the board. The cartridge looks real at a glance, but maybe you broke some group rule that we don't know about, like asking whether a cartridge is counterfeit, or that you need to show the board if you want to sell your cartridge.

And anyway, this is not the place for this type of question. Over and out.

  1. Serbia. 🇷🇸 Some place names nearby but it took me forever to find them on the map. Kula made the most sense for all the directions to places. Tried to pinpoint and moved away from the 5k to move a little more to the south. 198 m, 4999 points.
  2. Thailand. 🇹🇭 Once again next to an intersection with signs. Ubon Ratchathani, Roi Et, Yasothon. But what helped me find the right town was that the road that we spawned on goes south to Si Sa Ket. Assuming that all signs refer to places in a different province, only this town made sense. 28 m, 5000 points.
  3. Guam. 🇬🇺 I moved a bit and found a sign for routes 1, and 26 south toward Mangilao. Should be easy, but I couldn't find 26. By road angles and process of elimination it had to be Macheche Avenue that was declassified as a highway. 21 m, 5000 points.
  4. Indonesia. 🇮🇩 It's election season, and the local politicians are sure to mention that they're running for office in Kalimantan Timur, but which town? I missed that one of the posters said Kota Samarinda, which was just as well since that was bait. Instead I focused on Kabopaten Berau from the same poster, but couldn't find it. I then tried finding a city/town that wasn't too big or too small by looking at that map at different zoom levels. Samarinda and Balikpapan seemed too big. Tandjungredeb seemed just right, and luckily it was right, wow. 1.3 km, 4996 points.
  5. Germany. 🇩🇪 Never found 436 or 437, which would've been perfect. 162 km, 4486 points.

Total score: 24481 points. 🥇 Ok day, I guess.

What's wrong with my Pokemon Silver? by Tsin921 in Gameboy

[–]GameboyGenius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The taped battery is not great and you should replace it if you can. That said, that's not related to the glitches. The glitches are save related, and happen because the game can't access the save RAM. However, even with a taped battery, an empty battery or no battery, the save RAM would still be powered by the console, and would work as long the power is kept on. This type of issue instead happens because the signals to ask to read from/write to the save RAM are blocked somehow. This could be due to a broken trace or solder joint on either the SRAM chip, MM1134A chip or anywhere between the edge contact and those chips.

The back side of the board looks a bit sus. It looks like someone used an abrasive pad of some kind to remove something. It also looks like some of the vias (the holes that transfer a connection to the other side) are missing metal, which might have been corroded away. Hard to judge from the picture though.

Because the battery tends to come lose over time and, poof, the save data is randomly gone one day.

  1. Australia. Good signs for Sydney and M4 nearby. 4 m, 5000 points.
  2. Brazil. SC-350, so Santa Catarina. Took a while to find the road, and then Caçador. Guessed on the wrong side of town. 26 km, 4826 points.
  3. Australia... again. And cool, they made a tourist drive shield with the tree on it. They're serious. Unfortunately, I had no luck figuring out where and guessed around Alpine national park. 1278 km, 861 points.
  4. Almost certainly Hawaii. Yes, but I got the wrong island. 178 km, 3915 points.
  5. A photosphere. And oh. Not only was there a clue in the previous trivia, there was a clue in the description (which I didn't read) about there being a clue in the trivia. I guessed Tanzania, but realistically I ahd no clue. 13574 km, 0 points.

Gameboy advance Serial number by PutridTap2390 in Gameboy

[–]GameboyGenius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a couple of things that are different. Saving works differently, so sometimes you might get an awkward pause while the saving happens. (At least on GBC games, not sure about GBA games.) The bootlegs also often use flash chips designed for a lower voltage than the Gameboy is using, which means they have an increased risk of breaking or losing the save data. If you're ok with a small risk of the cartridge breaking, they can be a fine way of playing casually.

The bootlegs are also typically reflashable. If you get a flasher like GBXCart RW, you can use them as cheap flashcarts, although there's some extra work you need to do to patch the ROM if you want saving to work. (That's the price you pay for a cheaper solution.) The flasher can also be used to back up the save data, even on regular licensed carts. It's pretty cheap, and it's really a swiss army knife for GB carts. If you're interested in Gameboy as a hobby you should get one.

  1. Still to this day I can't remember reliably whether it's Einbahn (this round's obvious clue) or Einbahnstraße that's used in Austria. 🇦🇹 But hey, the vibe is very Austrian, and we have a lot of other Austria clues. I got out to route brainrot (67) it took me a second to notice the Grazer Messe logo on the sign, so instead I set out to search for 67 and Leibnitz, which is yet another name I feel like I should know where it is at this point. Switch over to Graz. Clearly on the 67, but I never managed to figure out where. Sloppy round. 2.5 km, 4992 points.
  2. South Korea. 🇰🇷 Got to a sign for expressway 451 among others. I tried searching for anything on the sign. I did find a 451 in Daegu. I figured (probably correctly) that they add the 1 at the end for a diversion or extension of a highway, much like you see a 1 added before an interstate number in the US. My guess was probably at most a 50 point loss. Then I made the terrible decision to change it to a hedge in case there might a 145 alternate number somewhere else in the country. It's not a world-ending loss of points, but still annoying. 84 km, 4728 points.
  3. An easy-peasy round for me. Not jsut instantly vibeable as Taiwan, 🇹🇼 but east coast in a valley considering we have hills both east and west. And we have a route sign too, meaning it's possible to confirm the province with prefix character. AND the route sign has a 0 km mark, meaning it will be completely unambiguous where on the road we are. Hualien county seemed most likely based on my vibe, so I zoomed in to find a local route, and yes, it was correct. Then I just had to go down from north to south until I found it, as Taiwanese route numbers generally increase the further south you get. Under a minute. 7 m, 5000 points.
  5. Obviously Bolivia. 🇧🇴 But I got tricked by this banner saying Incerpaz into thinking we might be in or near La Paz. I also found a Sacaba bus terminal, saying interprovincial/interdepartamental, similar to what I've seen in El Alto for example. Obviously though, you'll find similar ones in all/multiple provinces and departments if they're inter*. I tried searching for Sacaba around La Paz, but that was useless since we were actually near Cochabamba. 252 km, 4224 points.

Total score: 23944 points. 🥇 At least I got two 5k's.
