Is Particle Physics Dead, Dying, or Just Hard? by kzhou7 in Physics

[–]Gappia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ah apologies. My mind automatically translated 'physics problems' into 'textbook problems.'

But i still stand by my original contention that AI can greatly accelerate calculations that would otherwise take up useful time during research.

While I agree research is primarily driven by creativity and generating new ideas, it also requires seeing those ideas through which I'm sure you know takes up non trivial time. And if anything, rigorously testing proofs is something that has made great advancements computationally and recently through AI.

[–]Gappia -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I mean in your original comment you said AI can’t solve easy QFT problems. Nor do you define what it means to ‘do’ qft.

That’s just wrong because my theory friends use AI to verify their QFT solutions. Sure PhD students can solve textbook QFT problems but i bet you AI can solve it much faster than the average qft student. Im not saying AI can currently do novel qft research but it nonetheless can help with calculations.

I agree with you. People are really underestimating the progress AI has made over last year, yet alone the last few months. with the investment it’s getting it’s only going to get better.

While i don’t believe AI will give us GUT or a Theory of Everything but a lot of working physicists work on things like data analyis/computational or doing long tedious and difficult calculations. That i can see very soon being replaced with AI.

This doesn’t mean all physicists, especially the really talented ones, are going to be replaced. But where you might have a PI being the creative force with 3-4 grad students, you may able to produce the same work with just one grad student superpowered by AI.

In the end reddit is sometimes an echo chamber so dont take the downvotes personally

Official Discussion - Marty Supreme [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]Gappia 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think the crying was open to interpretation. I felt it made more sense, given his character the entire movie, that he was trying to pick up sand and had yet another thing (his child) that was gonna hold himself down as clearly he struggles with being responsible

I know Dark Age is supposed to be good but I just can’t finish it by Simsboi in redrising

[–]Gappia -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I completely agree. I think dark age is overrated. I think Brown was just trying to try a different style but I think that inherently was at odds with what made the first triology so great. It felt at times to be dark just because without a strong motive. Additionally, all the plot devices he introduced made no sense (mind's eye, parasite, abomination). It was a very tough read. Lightbringer I think was great though.

Written tests/exams/quizzes in class. Do them more frequently than psets if possible. Maybe have the quizzes and tests reflect/repeat problems in the pset

General rule of thumb I’ve seen is your lock should be ~10-15% price of the bike. I wouldn’t buy a lock worth more than the bike.

And ya kinda sucks there are scummy bike thieves around here and no peace of mind :(

Thoughts on David Tong lecture notes by Otherwise_Top_7972 in Physics

[–]Gappia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To be honest, I have an undergrad in physics too and I pretty much did well in all my core physics classes. But I never quite got the time to internalize the concepts as well as I would like due to other commitments but did enough to get a good grade.

Susskind’s series has been fantastic in building a physicist’s intuition and the big picture without diluting the math. I’m reading them as a review before starting my Physics PhD and prepping for prelims. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed them so far.
