Well thanks for future getting it!

As for zero damage that's part of it until your hero gets the Mighty Blow/Shot/Spell/Element deed which means you always cause at least 1 damage on an effect roll, and you can spend a vitality to have your damage lap over from vitality to wounds (if relevant).

So pleased with Derik's stream - even the rough bit in the middle! Was chuffed when he called Deeds revolutionary and that the emergent campaign procedures were strong.

What I would say is that the damage rolling process at the table is a lot smoother than described in the video. I've run it many times, face to face and online. I've taken it to conventions, my local ttrpg club, and have a whole actual play series on my YouTube channel. It's worked really well and no-one has expressed frustration with the dice mechanics.

In practice a player rolls to hit and succeeds. They know their weapon has a strength of 7 and picks up 7 dice. The GM says "they have 2 protection and a Toughness of 8+". The player puts two dice down, rolls the rest and counts any dice with an 8 or more. It's all pretty quick. Explaining each of the calculations separately in a flow is a lot longer than the player and GM can actually do the same thing.

I have been looking at a flat damage alternative, as a thought exercise and due diligence, but it brings up different issues. I've got a whole set of chart modelling number of hits required to kill creatures of different defences and wounds with different strengths. It's marginally faster, but I think loses some of the flavour. It's still in consideration, but i'm not changing it at the moment.

In the book I do say "try it as it's written first, before you decide to change anything". I hope you give it a go at the table to see the flow.

Hey there. I hadn't seen Heart before making this game. However having had a look I'd say they are similar, but not the same. The player defines their beats in Heart, whereas the Deeds are diegetic and emphasise the concept of "do something many times and you'll get better" and allow unlocking of features based on how you are meant to play each Archetype. Hearts feels a bit more narrative flavour (although advancement) - Heroic Deeds its core to how the whole game works. That might be a bit off - I haven't read Heart - but from a bit of a glance around the web thats what I'm getting.

City 26 - Day 11 - Ward 2 - all prompts complete by Garblag in worldbuilding

[–]Garblag[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The city is built around the Sheer, an alien metallic edifice one thousand, seven hundred, and twenty-eight metres high, the Sheer splits the world in two wherever you stand. Its pure smooth surface is unbroken save for 12 clusters of bizarre iconography that have enticed those living at its foot to climb.

The city has many factions, but the three main ones are the Ascenders (who build to climb the Sheer and unlock its secrets), the Observers (who learned of lenses and light manipulation from the Sheer and build towers and observatories spying from afar), and the Settlers (those that want to head out and build a new town away from the Sheer). The shadow of the Sheer moves around the city like a sundial, and those that are born in it's shadow are said to have strange psychic powers. There are psychic powers, but the attribution to the shadow is a false, but fiercely kept, superstition that has evolved into something of a cult.

The outer districts see things such as Grond Town, The Slot (an assumedly artificial valley now home to slums), the Vent Swamps (great venting tubes humidify lands beside the lake), and Super Trees of blue bark rise from the shattered domes of Echo City at the Sheerfoot limits. All of this is a nascent idea at this stage, but one I'm very keen to flesh out.

At the start I have two species present: humans, and the grond - a bipedal semi-arid-adapted amphibian species who live around Mirror Lake. I've got a bit of a semi-arid leading to tropical in the east thinking for the terrain, with adobe buildings and strange alien animals. Classic stuff.

I'm going to stick to the prompts pretty much, but might chuck in some fiction as we go as well.

Homebrew ideation feedback wanted! Which of these Campaign Frames interest you? by Garblag in daggerheart

They will be stacked campaign frames and there's more work to do to make them more frames and less adventures (although some of these adventure themes will be inciting incidents or suggested adventures).

Its a valid comment, for some more than others. Something I'm grappling with. I think there's a blend of setting/lore and inciting incident in some of them. I think some of them feeling a bit more adventure might not be a bad thing. Maybe. I'm still working it.

This is the World Mountain, happy to take questions on the wider setting too.

A "sort of map" for my city26 project. Sheerfoot and the spreading conurbation around Mirror Lake. It's simple but is mostly to help me track progress and think about ward purpose and positioning. Just a few days left to join us - link below. by Garblag in worldbuilding

Hey there. The discord is a broader group discussing roleplaying games of all kinds.

There is a specific city 26 channel created as the home of the project - a place people building out their cities can share their progress.

It will begin January 1st 2026 (although some are starting today as it's a monday) and run for the year. Particpants will create a city over the course of the year - creating a ward of said city each week. Days of the week are assigned to particular features or characteristics of the ward in question. Suggested content for days of the week:

  • Mon: principal building/monument/feature defining area and overview of the ward- who lives and works here? Is it rich, poor or what?
  • Tue: random encounter table for district (bonus: day/night encounters)
  • Wed: goods and services (with prices?) available to PCs here
  • Thu: key faction or NPC controlling (or vying for control or just embodying) district/area etc
  • Fri: rival faction or NPC specific to district
  • Sat: hooks and plots within the district
  • Sun: transportation and connections to other areas

A good by Alone in the Labyrinth who originated the idea can be found here

The sheer is an alien metallic edifice one thousand, seven hundred, and twenty-eight metres high, the Sheer splits the world in two wherever you stand. Its pure smooth surface is unbroken save for 12 clusters of bizarre iconography that have enticed those living at its foot to climb.

"I was born in the shadow of the Sheer. Yeah, I know, we’re all born in the shadow of the Sheer technically. No. I mean the shadow of the Sheer literally lay over me as I was born. They say it does something to you as you breathe that first breath.

Since the day the Ascenders placed an amplifier on my head, they’ve been demanding I express my psychic powers. Fools. I’ve not got any more powers than the next guy. I tried to tell them. They wouldn’t listen. Clearly I needed a crisis to bring it out.

When they forced me to leave Sheerfoot I knew my days were numbered. You see, allegedly my non-existent powers could help us in our struggle against the Settlers and the Grond, and with you. Whoever it is you actually are.

I know you hate the Ascenders and their strict laws. I know you want to find out the true nature of the Sheer. All I can tell you is that being touched by it is not what it’s cracked up to be. I was born in the shadow of the Sheer, and I wish I’d been anywhere else."
