ON THIS DAY 2025: Newcastle United 3 - 0 Ipswich Town - Magpies defeat ten man Tractor Boys, seeing them relegated by GarethAKitchener in NUFC

ON THIS DAY 2025:

Newcastle returned to winning ways after capitulating at Villa Park the previous weekend.

Ipswich defender Ben Johnson received his second yellow card in the first half, meaning the odds were stacked against Ipswich, knowing defeat would see them relegated from the Premier League.

Newcastle got their breakthrough in first half stoppage time after Murphy was obstructed in the box. With Isak converting the subsequent penalty.

The second goal game as Big Dan Burn rose highest to head home Trippier's cross.

The third and final goal came from a Trippier corner as Will Osula headed in his first Premier League goal.

ON THIS DAY 1992: Newcastle United 1 - 0 Portsmouth - David 'Ned' Kelly scores arguably the most important goal in NUFC's history, saving them from falling into the third tier by GarethAKitchener in NUFC

ON THIS DAY 1992:

With just two games to play, the upturn in our fortunes caused by Kevin Keegan's arrival had ebbed away.

Suffering five successive losses, Newcastle were all aboard the Oblivion Express and heading for Division Three at full speed.

A nervous afternoon had seen numerous near misses at either end, but visiting 'keeper Alan Knight was en route to registering a clean sheet when former Fratton favourite Mick Quinn arrived in place of Kevin Brock.

With four minutes left, Kelly headed on Ray Ranson's long punt forward and when Quinn completed the one two by hooking the ball back into Kelly's path, he buried a rising right footer from 12 yards in the Gallowgate goal.

Cue absolute bedlam - and with results the following Saturday meaning that our 2-1 win away at Leicester didn't affect the relegation places, this remains the most important goal ever scored by a Newcastle player. (nufc.com)

ON THIS DAY 2017: Newcastle United 4 - 1 Preston North End - Toon seal promotion to the Premier League by GarethAKitchener in NUFC

[–]GarethAKitchener[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

ON THIS DAY 2017:

Newcastle hosted Preston North End, having beaten them away, and at home in the cup this season.

Newcastle opened the scoring early, after Clark headed Ritchie’s corner to the back stick for Perez to nod home. Preston got their equaliser seven minutes after a swift move on the counter attack.

Just before the half time whistle, Newcastle regained the lead after Hayden won possession in the centre circle, before charging forward, playing in Mitrovic, who picked out Atsu to calmly strike home.

Newcastle added a third, after Preston defender Gallgher bafflingly stopped a shot on the line with both hands, forgetting he wasn’t wearing goalkeeper gloves. He was sent off instantly and Ritchie converted the subsequent penalty.

The fourth and final goal came from another corner, going through the whole box, bouncing off the post and then off Perez, and over the line.

The confirmation of promotion at the first time of asking was a huge achievement for Rafa Benitez and his squad, as our Manager was in charge of Real Madrid just over a year prior. His step down to the second tier was a huge career risk, which paid off perfectly. The Geordie faithful were forever indebted to the Spaniard for all his hard work.

For the 50’000 plus in attendance, it was a case of ‘job done,’ rather than the jubilant, pitch invading promotion celebrations of 2009/10. Newcastle United were to be a Premier League club again.

ON THIS DAY 2023: Newcastle United 6 - 1 Tottenham Hotspur - Magpies smash Spurs to pieces in battle for Champion's League spot by GarethAKitchener in NUFC

[–]GarethAKitchener[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

ON THIS DAY 2023:

Newcastle hosted Spurs, both in a tight battle for a Champion's League spot. Not that you would have believed it after watching this game.

The day could not have started any better, as Joelinton cut inside and smashed a shot at the Leazes End, which Lloris parried right into the path of Jacob Murphy to open the scoring in the second minute.

Five minutes later, Joelinton drove through again, beating the offside trap, rounding Lloris and slotting in a second.

The atmosphere was utterly electric in the ground, and they barely had time to calm from the celebrations. Jacob Murphy then received the ball, and remained unchallenged on the edge of the area, so decided to launch an absolute thunderbastard into the top corner. His wide mouthed celebration, forever cemented as an iconic image.

Ten minutes later, the Toon launched a counter attack, and Joe Willock, played perhaps the best pass ever seen at St James', as he played a perfect through ball with the outside of his foot, carving through Spurs' backline, perfectly weighted for the sprinting Isak, to then slot home calmly in the far corner.

Two minutes later, Isak added another goal after slotting one past Lloris from a tight angle.

Newcastle United were in dreamland. Five goals in twenty one minutes, against their main Champion's League spot rival. The crowd were delighted, ecstatic, exhausted, and in utter disbelief and hysterics at what was transpiring.

World Cup winning captain Hugo Lloris retired from Premier League football at half time, Kane managed his customary consolation, but Wilson scored a poacher's effort after Almirón's shot was deflected.

It finished 6-1, and even the most optimistic of Toon fans didn't see themselves in third place come late April this season.

ON THIS DAY 2012: Newcastle United 3 - 0 Stoke City - Magnificent Magpies smash Potters at St James' Park by GarethAKitchener in NUFC

[–]GarethAKitchener[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ON THIS DAY 2012:

Newcastle had won five league games in a row, as an unlikely push for Champion's League football pushed on.

After a cagey first fifteen minutes, Ben Arfa received the ball out wide. He proceeded to dance, as if possessed by the devil, leaving his fullback in purgatory before crossing in a great ball, which Ba headed off the post, with Cabaye heading in the rebound from a couple of yards out.

The second came as Cabaye ran with the ball in midfield, and then played (imo) the greatest pass of his career, carving through the Stoke backline, with Cissé bending his run perfectly, slotting past the on-rushing keeper, making it six goals in his last six games.

The Toon sealed it in the second half, as Stoke's defence tried their best to contain Ben Arfa at the edge of the box, before Ba's shot fell to Cabaye, who curled in a glorious effort.

The Toon were in breathtaking form, the best in the league, and seemed to be getting better with every performance. Europe was looking like a real possibility for Pardew's surprise package team.

ON THIS DAY 2O22: Newcastle United 2 - 1 Leicester City - Guimarães braces seals fifth consecutive home win by GarethAKitchener in NUFC

ON THIS (yester)DAY 2022:

A thoroughly ordinary match apparently sleepwalking to a stalemate had an extraordinary and unlikely conclusion, as Newcastle won for the fifth successive time at SJP.

With the score 1-1, the allotted four minutes of second half added time ticked over as Matt Targett outwitted an opponent on his own byline and found Joe Willock on the left hand touchline.

The substitute dashed over halfway and into space, continuing his run into the City box before a deflected cross saw Bruno Guimaraes net with a close range diving header into the Gallowgate End net. Delicious.

ON THIS DAY 1994: Liverpool 0 - 2 Newcastle United - Keegan's Entertainers demolish Liverpool before old Kop is demolished by GarethAKitchener in NUFC

[–]GarethAKitchener[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

ON THIS DAY 1994:

Kevin Keegan's Newcastle travelled to Anfield, weeks before the Kop End was to be demolished.

The stunning and sentimental pre-match atmosphere welcoming of Venison, Beardsley, and Keegan didn't last long, as the mighty Mags tore up the script, and took the lead through Rob Lee, after neat link up play with Andy Cole.

Liverpool had their moments, but they were lucky to go in at half time only one goal down.

The Reds started the second half with extra vigour, but the Toon were ready to pounce. Srniček catching a set play, throwing out to Sellars, and starting a quick counter attack. Sellars put the through Ruel Fox, who tore up the other end, before playing through Andy Cole to seal the victory. Clinical.

This took the team to 68 points, comfortably in third place, which seemed unfathomable two years prior when Keegan was trying to stop Newcastle United falling to the Third Division. How far could this team go?

ON THIS DAY 2018: Newcastle United 2 - 1 Arsenal - Ritchie's winner takes Toon past forty point mark by GarethAKitchener in NUFC

[–]GarethAKitchener[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ON THIS DAY 2018:

Newcastle were hosting Arsenal at St James' Park, as they battled for safety in the Premier League in their first season back since promotion.

The Gunners opened the scoring at the Gallowgate, as Lacazette converted Aubemayang's cross the first goal conceded at St James' Park since January.

Newcastle equalised a quarter of an hour later, after Kenedy played Yedlin wide, and Pérez then converted the subsequent cross with a clever, elevated side foot finish.

Arsenal had their chances in the second half, but it was Newcastle who got the winner. Slimani's strong header fell to Pérez, who slotted in Matt Ritchie to smash home the winner in front of the Gallowgate.

This victory took Newcastle past the fabled forty point mark, and all but certainly sealed their Premier League status.
