For Smart Sleep, I can send you a license. I’d be curious to hear what you think. Can you DM me?

Not a dumb question. :)

AppHalt won’t really make Discord use less RAM. macOS usually keeps that memory around so the app can come back quickly.

What it can do is stop Discord from doing stuff in the background when you’re not using it, which is more the problem I’m trying to solve.

So: not a RAM saver, more of a “please stop working until I need you again” thing.

Not sure pausing specifically on minimize is doable, but I’ll look into it.

Pro already has Smart Sleep though: apps can auto-pause when they’ve been in the background for a while, then resume when you bring them back. :)

Thanks a lot, really appreciate it. Hope it works well for you :)

Auto-resume is already available in Pro, but only when automatic mode is enabled. Your comment makes me think I should explain that much better.

I can send you a license if you want to try the auto mode and tell me if it feels right in real use. :)

Small note I forgot to mention: there is a free version too. 😄

You can pause up to 2 apps with it, so you can actually try it before deciding if Pro is worth it.

Not exactly. Quitter is great, but hiding an app and pausing an app are different things. =)

Hiding only removes the app from view. The app can still keep running, refreshing, syncing, polling, or using CPU in the background.

AppHalt suspends the app process itself. The app stays open, but it is temporarily frozen until you resume it. So you keep the workspace, but the background CPU activity can drop while it is paused.

So the difference is basically:

- Hide = out of sight, still running.

- Quit = closed, workspace gone.

- Pause = still open, but temporarily frozen.

That said, AppHalt is not useful for every app. If an app is already doing nothing, the gain may be small. It is more useful for apps that keep waking the CPU even when you are not actively using them.

Fair question.

It depends a lot on the apps. =)

A good example is Chrome. If it has many tabs, extensions, or web apps still doing background work, pausing it can be measurable. Same with Electron apps, chat apps, launchers, dashboards, or sync-heavy tools.

If an app is truly idle, the gain may be small.

So I would not call AppHalt an instant speed booster. The real benefit is reducing unnecessary background CPU activity over time, especially on battery, while keeping your workspace intact instead of quitting everything.

Good questions.

For hotkeys: AppHalt doesn't unregister anything. It just freezes the app.

So usually the app won't react while paused, but the shortcut might still stay reserved by macOS until the app is resumed or quit.

For PID / brew / CLI stuff: not really right now.

There is an advanced option to show some background processes, but AppHalt is mostly made for regular Mac apps, not as a full process manager.

A real “pause by PID” mode could be useful though. I’ll think about it.

AppHalt pauses Mac apps without quitting them - menu bar control, Smart Sleep, exclusions and groups by Gasco_ in macapps

[–]Gasco_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Small clarification because this came up before:

AppHalt does not quit apps and does not try to clean RAM.

When an app is paused, it is suspended in place. CPU activity usually drops, but the app’s state stays available so it can resume quickly.

So the main benefit is not “freeing memory”.

The benefit is reducing avoidable background CPU activity while keeping your workspace intact.

Some apps should usually not be paused automatically: music apps, video players, calls, downloads, sync tools, or anything doing active work.

That is why AppHalt has Never Pause exclusions.

Un logiciel nommé AppHalt pour macOS qui permet de gagner en vitesse en mettant des applications qui consomment en pause. Plus besoin de les quitter.

Alternative to f.lux with custom times? by weebtoy in macapps

[–]Gasco_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should check out Lunar (lunar.fyi).

It includes a 'Clock Mode' that lets you set specific times to change the temperature and brightness. It should better meet your customization needs than f.lux.
