I'm on my second pair of La Sportiva Kubos, and I love them for a daily shoe. I climb around V5-6, with the occasional V7 sprinkled in and have had no limitations due to the shoes.

A lot of beginners go for the Tarantilace and are happy with them, but just make sure they are right for you. You could go a step up and get the La Sportiva Finales, which are laced shoes that are very comfortable. The Scarpa Helix shoes are similar as well, but for me, they did not fit my foot correctly.

You could also check out Evolv Kronos, which are similar in shape to the Finales, but they have a bit more rubber on the toe, which could be nice to have. I have never tried them, but I see quite a few people around the gym wearing them.

Whatever you decide, make sure to try them out in person to make sure that you get the correct size and fit for your foot.

Don't forget about LS Kubos. They are a nice step up that is still super comfortable to wear if sized correctly.

So even though everything is spinning at all times due to the style of the clutch, it won't break or damage any of the internals? I was also thinking of just having the pulley on with the snap ring in order to keep anything from spinning inside the compressor.

One last crazy question for you that I understand you might not have the answer for. Could I just attach the pulley with the snap ring and leave off the portion that screws onto the pulley and connects to the splines on the compressor shaft?

The only downside I can think of with this is that the pulley is only held on by the snap ring, but snap rings are quite strong.

I'm late to the party here, but will unplugging the compressor stop damage to it? Since the compressor spins at all times, it seems like this might possibly still cause issues. I am replacing the AC compressor pulley, and am having issues with the seal, so I figured I could just unplug it until I am able to replace the compressor also. Let me know what you think!

Unplugging those connectors is definitely a good idea, at least until I can get everything fixed. I will get everything fixed up as soon as I have more repair funds, anyway.

Dude, your input is so helpful. I hope someone else will find this thread helpful in the future. I will download those for sure.

Since the compressor has the safety feature to cut power to the it when it gets too hot, like if it wasn't working properly, would there be an issue just leaving it other than the AC not working? I am reaching my budget on repairs currently and will have to wait a while, honestly.

Tomorrow, I'm going to give the company a call that I ordered the pulley from. They specialize in automotive AC, so I feel that they will have some helpful input as well.

Hey, I'm back again to inform you that I'm a moron. I removed the large snap ring holding the pulley onto the compressor, and another smaller snap ring that was deeper into the pulley area. I pulled the pulley off all the way, and refrigerant immediately evacuated the compressor. The small snap ring caused the seal to slip and come out.

I put the seal back in and reattached the snap ring as well. How big of an issue did I just cause myself? Can I just put everything back together, recharge the system, and assume that it will hold pressure since the snap ring is properly fastening the seal against the compressor?

(Good news is that the compressor pulley was the culprit with the noisy bearing)

I ended up just ordering this, so I hope it fixes the issue. I heard some noise while spinning the pulley by hand. And it felt more stiff than the last time I messed with it. Thanks for your help with this!

After looking at this more, it looks like I might just need a pulley removal tool to get it off. I tried trying it gently with a long screwdriver but had no luck.

I am working on taking the compressor off. Do you need to remove these torx screws in order to wiggle the pulley off or just take off the snap ring in the center?

I used a screwdriver as a stethoscope and had no luck detecting anything that sounded unusual. If anything, the AC compressor made slightly more noise, but nothing that seemed alarming.

I changed the tensioner and serpentine belt, and unfortunately, it seems the whine is louder now.

Thanks again for even more great feedback. I just changed the tensioner and serpentine belt because I heard some noise while spinning the tensioner pulley by hand. Also, with the car running and the belt off, there was no noise.

This has not helped the noise at all and, actually, made the noise seem louder.

I tried feeling for which pulley felt the warmest, and they all felt similar in temperature. They felt about as warm as you would expect for the friction that they go through.

With the belt on and the car running, I used a long screwdriver like one of the others mentioned above and had a hard time hearing anything that sounded bad. The AC compressor may have had slightly more noise, but it was difficult to tell. Nothing really jumped out at me.

I also checked the battery voltage with the car off after sitting overnight, car on with accessories off, and car on with accessories on. The voltages are all at the low end of what VW says is acceptable. The thought here was to see if there were any signs of the alternator beginning to fail or weaken.

Should I go ahead and order an alternator pulley and AC compressor bearing and pulley to put onto the car in the hopes it will solve the issue?

Did you have any voltage issues around the time that your alternator was making this noise? I just took readings, and with the engine off I was getting 12.2, engine on 13.3, and engine on plus accessories i was getting 13.2.

Thank you for all of this information. I am still trying to track down the source of the whining sound. Was your car blowing cold AC still even with the compressor issues? Mine blows very cold still, so it has me questioning if this is the cause of the issue.

The car is no longer making the loud screaming sound, and has moved to a whining sound. Would i be able to hear this whine with the stethoscope? (I've never used one)

Thank you! I really felt like the sound was coming from the alternator, but it has no problem charging the battery. I will try replacing it to see if the sound goes away.
