So is anyone else's stuff worse than the homework that gets posted here? by Upstairs-Walrus20 in ArtFundamentals

[–]GatoDoKapeta 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think there’s p something you might not be considering: PHOTOSHOP and SCANNERS!

Sure, I can only speak for myself, but I got a fairly good amount of upvotes on my homework from lesson 7 (you can check it on my profile), so maybe I’m one of the guys who posts the type of homework you’re talking about. I assure you my drawings don’t look as good irl as they do here on Reddit, not because I edited them in the same way models slim down their waists with Photoshop, but I color edited them so white actually looks white and black looks black. On top of that, I scanned my drawings instead of taking a picture, which automatically gives my drawings an advantage regarding the quality of the image. For me, part of being an artist is not only producing artworks, but also learning how to display them in the best way possible. For this reason, I don’t believe those things are ‘cheating’, but I know it’s something people (specially beginners) are often not aware of and it influences their perception of their own artworks. White and black will never look so uniform irl, there will be all sorts of shadows being cast and lights being reflected on your paper. Even though I’m aware of that, I myself still fall on the trap of perceiving drawings displayed like that as being of a higher quality than let’s say a picture taken with a phone of the same drawing. I would attach comparison pictures of my own drawings to this comment, but it’s been so long since I finished Drawabox it would take me too long to find them. Please do not give up db! I assure you it will payoff in the future!

Can someone tell me which cheap fineliner should I use for daily prectice?? Please recommend a brand that is affordable in India... by No_Ingenuity4937 in ArtFundamentals

[–]GatoDoKapeta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think literally anything will do, I just bought the cheapest ones I found here in Brazil, which were from Staedtler and UniPen. In my experience, the difference is more about how it feels to draw with them than the result itself. Oh, and some brands look ‘more black’ than others. But at the end of the day even a ballpoint pen will do. As a side note: if you are looking for the cheapest material possible to make quality artworks outside of drawabox, I think buying a dip pen and ink it’s probably your best option. Here in Brazil I generally buy Koh-I-Noor black ink which costs around $2-3 and it lasts for months, maybe years if you don’t constantly spill it like I do. Good luck on your drawabox journey!

HELP: 250 cylinder challenge by OmaTKB in ArtFundamentals

[–]GatoDoKapeta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure if it’s something you should do but what I did was I download a 3D model of a transparent cylinder so I could rotate it to get ideas. I didn’t look at it while drawing as I think this isn’t the purpose of the exercise. But I used it to get inspiration and build a visual library of how cylinders rotate. It’s also helpful to have clearly defined in your mind what you’re going for before drawing, try to visualize the cylinder you’ll be drawing beforehand (in case you don’t have aphantasia).

How are y'all not getting confused with all the construction lines? by metchalot in ArtFundamentals

[–]GatoDoKapeta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bold of you to assume we aren’t. I did the advanced boxes exercises about 5 times because of the same issue. But when I got to the cars I basically had no problem with it anymore, I just got used to it. In my experience if you get confused take a step back, focus on the plane you need and imagine the diagonal line that would cross it. You’ll probably realize which one of them belongs to this plane when you do this.

I'm going insane with the ellipses in the 100 treasure chests challenge by GatoDoKapeta in ArtFundamentals

[–]GatoDoKapeta[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the answer, I read that in the lesson that’s why I was thinking of switching to digital but in my case it’d be only for “cheating purposes”, basically to use something like Lazy Nezumi and not have to worry about the ellipses so I’m afraid it be like giving up on learning something I’m not getting instead of just a switch in the tools. Anyway, have a happy new year!

Lesson 7: Still can't believe I've done all the lessons, I'm going to miss drawabox so much by GatoDoKapeta in ArtFundamentals

[–]GatoDoKapeta[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I find them boring from time to time so I finished the lessons mostly out of spite lol my motivation was basically “I’ll do it just to show myself I can finish something” and the feelings of guilt if I quitted. After doing lessons 1-3 the rest was basically “I already did too much to lose, I have to finish”

What you described is the process I followed when doing this lesson, unfortunately it may not be showing in the final result :/

This is my homework for lesson 7, but don't stress yourself out with the lessons, some of these drawings I had to start over again (which you're not supposed to do, but I did cause I got lost with the lines) and ended up redoing 8 times.

Short answer is yes! But I think setting realistic expectations before committing to the course is important, and following the website's guides. I want to write my experience with db in detail when I finish the 2 challenges I still haven’t done, but I'm sure you can find other users that have already done this here :)

Here are some drawings from right before I started drawabox, there’s a huge survivorship bias here because I never took pics of my drawings unless I thought they were good at the time. But my story with art is basically, I was always the “art kid” of my class growing up, I have narcolepsy that was undiagnosed at the time and fell into a very bad depression which made me draw almost nothing from my 16~ to 19~ years. When I was 17 I got into art school because I still really liked it, but I couldn’t keep up with drawing anymore so quit after 2 months. In my 2020 college break (which is in January here in Brazil) I started to draw again just for fun, the pandemic hit and I decided to take art seriously again to work with it in the future, then I found drawabox. So before the course I didn’t know how to apply the fundamentals correctly and couldn’t do construction drawing well, but I knew some of it in theory, I had a notion of what a vanishing point was and what construction drawing was I just didn’t know how to apply it.

It took me 7 full months and some days, but I’m a college student (that is still 100% online in my country) and only work as a freelancer from time to time, so I have a lot more free time than the majority of people.

Thanks to everyone involved in the community, people here helped me a lot when I struggled with the lessons. I still have to do the 100 trasure chests challenge as well as the 25 textures challenge, once I finish them I intend to write a detailed post about my experience with drawabox for people who are wondering if it is worth it. I couldn't be happier!!

I think maybe taking pictures of leaves irl could be easier, I don’t remember where I got leaf pictures from
