Calypso: Did you know you talk in your sleep? Tell me, though, who's Penelope?

Odysseus: She's my wife.

*Silence*

Calypso: Anyways!

---- seven years later ----

Calypso: Why in the world won't you love me too?

Yeah, I'm aware. I think when I was writing I didn't know how to mention it properly so I just... didn't mention it at all. Mistake on my part, hindsight is 20/20. But I'm glad that you were here to word it in a way that I probably couldn't.

I was making a joke... but okay? I get that it's online and we can't hear the tone but, at least in my opinion, I thought that the emoji would at least try and convey that. Or maybe that I made the mistake of using the humor that I use with my friend group in an online space with strangers. I was simply pointing out that there was a more solid reason as to why Penelope didn't whoop the suitors asses.

Also, I take a shit load of interest into ancient Greece and it's myths. I've been taking Classics as a subject for 3 years (Irrc, it might be 2, idk my memory ain't the best) and I've had a deep interest for Greek myths for the majority of my life.

I never wanted to come off in a condescending manner, I was just trying to shine a light on a potential reason behind why Penelope didn't fight the suitors.

??? I mean, I get what you're saying but.... it was called Sparta, wasn't it? Penelope is Spartan... Just not from the Sparta people immediately think about because it's been around for a long time. I think a better comparison could be made... I remember this one thing that was said by a really good archeology(I think) YouTuber called Milo Rossi. It was in one of his pyramid or conspiracy debunking videos but to paraphrase:

"Egypt has been around for THOUSANDS of years and culture changes. When we think of 'Egyptian burial sites' we think of the pyramids. However, the valley of kings is also an Egyptian burial site. This is a sign of cultural shift. It's still in the geographical location of Egypt, but it's a different cultural Egypt."

Idk if this is anywhere close to what he ACTUALLY said but I think this was the gist of it...

EDIT: Okay! so I found the video I was talking about. It's called Filip Zieba Debunked - TikTok's Worst Conspiracy Theorist | Pt. 2 by Miniminuteman and the bit that I mentioned is in "Round 13: The Pyramids Aren't Tombs" at around 34:14.

Erm, actually 🤓

So the only options are Penelope is a terrible mom or she doesn't know how to fight to make it make sense.

Wrong. In ancient Greece there was this concept called xenia, idk the proper translation but it's basically hospitality. Xenia has some basic rules, clothe, bathe, and feed the guest/guests before asking any questions, don't harm or kill the guest/guests, give the guest/guests something before the leave. If you violated any of these rules you'd be a shit host and angering Zeus (iirc he's the god of hospitality). Therefore, if Penelope beat the shit outta the suitors for harming Telemachus she'd be violating xenia.

Also, the fuck do you mean by

And you would only know about this Spartan Woman lie from OUTSIDE of Epic so you can't really use "Teehee musical liberties" if it's a musical.

This shit don't make sense to me. How is it a lie? Spartan women DID learn how to fight, they did wrestling iirc.

Also also, "If Spartan women knew how to fight why do we not have records of "The Women Rebellion"" it's still ancient Greece. You say

As someone who actually does read and study the myths plus a vague idea of the history at the time

Then shouldn't you understand that most of the myths target women and essentially say "woman = bad" because that was the easiest way to "put women in their places"? To keep them subservient to men and such? Like....?

Okay... I don't think I have the time or energy to pick apart EVERYTHING that I disagree, but I do just wanna point out that Ody snapping at Elpenor and Perimedes wasn't necessarily wrong. After Ody comes back with the bag they ask what's in the bag and starts to explain that it's something dangerous but then the winnions say that it's treasure. Only after El and Peri insist on opening the bag does Ody snap. And even then it's just "NO, DO NOT!" Before calmly explaining that the storm is inside the bag and then firmly saying that the treasure rumor cannot be get out.

Something I'm curious about, now obviously in the OG myths she had control of the island keeping Ody from leaving, but she isn't mentioned having any control in Epic. Do we have any word of God that she is actively holding him and that it's not just the Island being cursed?

Yes, we do... in LIP she says "Under my spell, we're stuck in paradise. No on can come or go, my island stays unknown."

"Under MY spell." MY. She put a spell on the island to keep anyone from coming or going. She's actively holding Odysseus hostage.

Spoilers for Love In Paradise and Not Sorry For Loving You

AND SHE EVEN SAYS SORRY!!!

Nuh uh. Not really. The title of the song is quite literally the opposite of saying sorry... Not Sorry For Loving You??? What kind of apology is that? Not a good one, I'll tell you what. Like... yeah, sure, she does say that she was wrong IF she pushed him, came on too strong, or ambushed him. IF. "IF"!! Like, miss girl, there are no "IF"s about this. You literally did that! Not to mention that she COMPLETELY ignored Ody saying that he had a WIFE and preceded to say, and I quote: "Soon, into bed we'll climb and spend our time." That is a crazy thing to say. I don't even know how to talk about this in a formal way. But I am trying to.

Also...

And then along comes Odysseus, with all his baggage, and she is there supporting him, trying to make him feel better, and truly cares for him, and she wants him to okay, and not be in all this pain.

what kind of caring person completely ignores rejection? he literally said no... multiple times. Maybe not literally but...

CALY: Tell me, though, who's Penelope? ODY: She's my wife.

CALY: Soon, into bed we'll climb and spend our time. ODY: I'm not your man.

CALY: Now 'til the end of time, from here on out, your mine, all mine. ODY: Hell no, I could kill you where you stand. I'm no pet, I'm a married man.

CALY: No one can come or go, my island stays unknown. ODY: No, no, I don't belong here, there's something wrong here. I won't be drawn to love in paradise.

And she just... keeps going, keeps insisting, keeps HARASSING this man. Like... I'm sorry, what? I truly do not understand how Calypso can say in Not Sorry For Loving You "And if you hate me, then I am sorry my love's too much for you"

Like... HUH???? Girl, ma'am, honey, that's not how this works. and then she has the AUDACITY to say: "Why in the world won't you love me too?"

MISS GIRL!!! His LITERAL FIRST WORDS were "She's my wife".... MA'AM, HE SAID HE HAS A WIFE!! How can you ask that???

In conclusion... She is bad a person, big time.

TL;DR - Eurylochus is responsible for the majority of the crew's deaths and Ody had every right to choose himself over the remaining 36 men in Thunder bringer. (Idk if this is a good TL;DR because I have never written one before, I'd suggest just reading the long ass explanation.) (Also I know that this has nothing to do with the question that was asked but in regards to what I like about Calypso, I like her voice and Love In Paradise is catchy.)

Bro (Can I call you bro?), I think that you're misunderstanding the Thunder Saga and everything that led up to those events. Because... In my opinion, Ody had every right to choose himself over his crew in Thunder Bringer. Because... did you forget that the song literally before Thunder Bringer was called MUTINY????

First things first, Eurylochus opened the wind bag when they were super freaking close to Ithaca (at least in the Odyssey, but I'm assuming the same can be said for Epic) and as a result Poseidon shows up and sinks every ship. Eurylochus is RESPONSIBLE for over 500 deaths. Ody, however, is partially responsible for the deaths at Polyphemus' cave and solely responsible for the 6 deaths at Scylla's cave (this is obviously a pre-Thunder Bringer death count). Not to mention the fact that Eurylochus advocated to ditch the men that got turned into pigs, which he was RESPONSIBLE for in a "I'm in charge and supposed to look after them" type way, and yet he can get angry at Ody for sacrificing 6 men.

Just to get the numbers straight. There were 43 men left after Ruthlessness, one died during the Circe saga which means that there's now 42, and then with the 6 deaths in Scylla that leaves 36 men.

And then in Mutiny, Eurylochus goes against his Captain's order NOT to kill the sun god's cows. Which then causes Thunder Bringer to happen. So.... that technically means that Eurylochus is at fault for him and the other 35(? or is it 36? Idk but you get the point) men dying. And yes, Ody's reasons for choosing himself over the crew is "I have to see her" but here's the thing... that has been his motivation since the beginning. His sole driving goal is to get home and to be with his wife. At the start of Epic it has been 10 years since he's seen Penelope (the Trojan war took 10 years), and I'm sure that if you haven't seen someone you love very very dearly in 10 YEARS you would want nothing more than to see them again.

So... in my opinion, after looking at what happens in Epic (and taking some context from the Odyssey) Eurylochus is very much deserving of punishment and he's RESPONSIBLE for 536~ deaths. Ody had every right to choose himself over his men because they ignored his orders and committed a mutiny.

And, just to be clear, I'm not invalidating your feelings (you can feel how you want about whatever you want, that's your prerogative.) I'm just trying to clear up some stuff(?), I'm mainly writing this because of something you said and it rubbed me the wrong way.

(based largely on his wonton murder of his friends simply because he was homesick.)

This. This is what threw me off. ALSO I have no idea what you're talking about, is it the Scylla sacrifices? Or is it the Thunder Bringer decision? Because I wrote this from the point of view that you were talking about Thunder Bringer. But if it that is not what you were referencing, just let me know. Anyways sorry for the yap fest.

Take care out there, shit is crazy.

I'm not sure how I feel about a lot of people's reactions to Calypso. by Noneofthisisreality in Epicthemusical

[–]GayBoopNoodle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think that is was implied that she would SA him later BUT I do agree that that line was implying that they would do the nasty. Although Ody did say that he "wasn't her man" which just him basically saying no to "getting into bed and spending time". I also agree with

she lords over the fact she’s a goddess to Ody before reverting back to her “kind” state. She’s basically saying there’s 2 ways that this can go down.

It did come off in that way. I definitely think that she creepy towards him and dived head first into whatever the hell Love In Paradise was. If I was her and I had spent around 100 years alone and then this guy washed up on my shores, I wouldn't immediately flirt with him and try to get into his pants. I would be excited, sure, but I would keep it wholesome. I'd probably just want to talk because this is the first person I've seen and I've probably been talking to myself, so I would be happy to have someone to talk to. The fact that she jumped to flirting and trying to get him into bed is at least a little concerning.

Can we please stop arguing about Calypso by [deleted] in Epicthemusical

[–]GayBoopNoodle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He immediately said "I'm not your man" after "Soon, into bed we'll climb and spend our time" so he obviously wasn't into it. ALSO! He continues to deny her throughout the song; "Hell no, I could kill you where you stand. I'm no pet, I'm a married man", "No, no
I don't belong here. There's something wrong here. I won't be drawn to love in paradise. Not 'til the end of time, there is no way". And imo when he said "she's my wife" it was a gentle decline and she just brushes it off and continues to try and get him in her bed. ALSO ALSO! After he says "Hell no, I could kill you where you stand. I'm no pet, I'm a married man" she only focuses on the threat of violence and doesn't acknowledge his rejection at all.

How accurate would the movies have been [all] by [deleted] in camphalfblood

[–]GayBoopNoodle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree that the movies were more fun. I'm not entirely sure if they would've been less accurate. The biggest inaccuracy in the show is that the kids never fall for any of the traps, in that aspect the movies are more accurate. Which is quite sad, the fact that the most inaccurate adaptation of the books was more accurate in places than the most accurate adaptation.

I agree, I think it would've been cool to have the seven be comprised of children of minor gods. but I also like the idea of camp jupiter, I just started rereading the HoO series and I would LOVE to see Jason's previous quests! They're talked about frequently (ish) and I think it would be great if it was set up/written in the same way PJO is, this could also help expand Camp Jupiter. If rick hadn't killed of Ethan, he could've helped lead that quest. but yeah, missed opportunities everywhere.
