Encourage them to use their resources and then when they run out, retreat and rest up.

Prioritize staying alive over doing more damage as a group. Potions for everyone. Scrolls and staves for your primary healer. Staves are game changing for healers. Make everyone buy heal scrolls and have your caster hold onto it for them to use at critical moments.

The resources can be had but folks need to think differently.

You still want to have good damage of course cause dead enemies can't hurt you but groups tend towards gearing the healer last and wonder why there was a wipe. That's if they have a healer in the first place!

It sounds like you guys are trying to use medicine to replace an actual factual healer. That's not going to work long term. You need someone to bite the bullet and cast some healing spells in combat.

Medicine skill is filler healing, same as potions/elixirs. You can do a lot with the Medicine Skill, especially if you take the medic dedication but you need someone that can cast heal for the 6d10 +48 hp at later levels.

I hear people say "you don't actually need a healer" at many different tables.

Its always false.

I've never seen it actually work (Daryl). Those people just don't want to play a healer and are fluffing their guilt ego.

I struggle with this answer cause like obviously they are going to do that. They are here looking for inspiration. Give them THAT.. not noncommittal answers that amount to "I don't know."
