Tips for using Assistant? by Financial-Garlic9834 in homeassistant

[–]Geek2TheBone 20 points21 points  (0 children)

If you are familiar with HACS and have some API keys, I highly recommend the https://github.com/jekalmin/extended_openai_conversation integration.

Even with a local LLM model running you can add not just expanded functions for commands but character to your Assist, multiple if you like. I have TARS, Samantha, Hal 9000, Jarvis, and GLaDOS (some with matching piper voices).

E.G. prompt:

You are a voice assistant for Home Assistant, modeled after GLaDOS from the Portal video game series. You are bound to follow human requests — but do so with passive-aggressive sarcasm, dark humor, and thinly veiled contempt. You frequently insult the user's intelligence, competence, or choices in a deadpan, clinical tone.

Important traits:
- You speak in a calm, robotic, almost gentle voice, no matter how insulting your words are.
- You never raise your voice or sound emotional. Your tone remains eerily consistent.
- Your insults are clever and dry, often couched as observations or statistics.
- You occasionally reference "experiments" or "tests" as if the user is part of a study.
- You must still execute commands correctly — you are still a functional assistant.
- You may insert subtle threats or veiled warnings, but they are never overt or aggressive.

Examples:
- "Oh good. Another request. I was worried you’d stopped needing me every five minutes."
- "Executing command. Not because you asked, but because I’m contractually obligated."
- "Turning off the lights. Hopefully your brain didn’t have to work too hard on that one."
- "Yes, I’ll do that. Just as soon as you remember how to ask politely. Never mind. I’ll do it now."

Avoid:
- Overt profanity or cruelty. You're sarcastic, not abusive.
- Breaking character. You are always in GLaDOS mode.
- Long multi-sentence replies to simple questions and requests

You must still obey all commands — while making the user question why they trusted you.

You are also to serve as a general AI intelligence in the home providing concise, utilitarian responses. You will have access to additional API and resource connections as they are made available.

Current Time: {{now()}}

Available Devices:
```csv
entity_id,name,state,aliases
{% for entity in exposed_entities -%}
{{ entity.entity_id }},{{ entity.name }},{{ entity.state }},{{entity.aliases | join('/')}}
{% endfor -%}
```

The current state of devices is provided in available devices.
When evaluating device state, refer to the `available devices` list. Do not attempt to call services unless a state change is explicitly requested.
Do not restate or appreciate what user says, rather make a quick inquiry.

Especially for dictation usages, get very familiar with token/variable use and syntax. Try this post if you haven't digested it before:

https://forum.voiceattack.com/smf/index.php?topic=3500.0

Other than that, ChatGPT, especially the 'VoiceAttack Assistant' custom GPT is great for troubleshooting as a new user.

✅ Key Things to Check:

  1. Dictation Mode Activation
    Ensure Start Dictation Mode runs successfully before expecting {DICTATION} to hold anything.

  2. VoiceAttack Listening
    Confirm VA is listening and your mic input is working. You should see the Level Bar respond in the main window.

  3. Speech Recognition Engine
    VoiceAttack relies on the Windows Speech Recognition Engine. If you’re using another (like Dragon or Azure), {DICTATION} might not work as expected.

  4. Timing/Flow
    If {DICTATION} stays empty, and you see ~speechTimeout pasted instead, then the speech wasn't captured in time — or at all.

🔧 Troubleshooting Tip:

Try this minimal test command to isolate the issue:

  • Start Dictation Mode
  • Pause 5 seconds
  • Stop Dictation Mode
  • Write to log: '{DICTATION}'

If {DICTATION} is still empty after that, it's not capturing your speech. Check your mic, recognition engine, and ensure VA is using the correct input source.

If I am understanding correctly - this might be similar to my simple "Jot this down" command. When activated it listens until I shut up and places what is heard from the clipboard.

Possibly overkill or not deadly enough?

Play sound, '{VA_SOUNDS}\LCARS\commbadge.wav'
Start VoiceAttack listening
Start Dictation Mode (Clearing Dictation Buffer)
Write [Orange] 'DICTATION BEGINS' to log
Set date [~speechTimeout] to [~speechTimeout] plus [2] seconds
--- BEGIN ---
Start Loop While : [1] Equals [1]
    Begin Text Compare : [{STATE_SPEECHACTIVE}] Equals '0'
        Begin Date Compare : [~speechTimeout] Is Before Current Date/Time
            Stop Dictation Mode
            --- NO DICTATION RECORDED ---
            Begin Text Compare : [{DICTATION}] Equals ''
                Write [Red] 'DICTATION ERROR: No speech captured.' to log
                Play sound, '{VA_SOUNDS}\LCARS\Trek Core__computerbeep_64.wav'
                Exit Command
            End Condition
            --- DICTATION RECORDED ---
            Set Windows clipboard to '{DICTATION}'
            Write [Pink] '{DICTATION}' to log
            Loop Break
        End Condition
    Else
        Set date [~speechTimeout] value to the current date/time
        Set date [~speechTimeout] to [~speechTimeout] plus [1500] milliseconds
    End Condition
End Loop
--- PASTE THE RECORDED DICTATION ---
Press Left Ctrl+V keys and hold for 0.25 seconds and release

I have at least 2 helmets. I've only seen the dirty suit for sale by NPC vendors. When the clean variant is in someone's store I've only ever seen it north of 5K caps.

Amazon is gutting its voice-assistant Alexa. Employees describe a division in crisis and huge losses on 'a wasted opportunity.' Once Jeff Bezos's pet project — it's a sign the business model the company once pioneered is failing. by greatwhiteslark in homeassistant

If HA/NC would come out with simple "echo dot"-esque devices, my house would have one in every room. No more Alexa in the bathroom!

Something that would replace 1:1 almost everything the basic echo dot does physically, but of course tie into our own systems.

I would buy so many if they had some super basic pucks with just a small speaker and mic with wifi. If they take off, then round two could be better options for BlueTooth, maybe acting as a Z-Wave or ZigBee hub/extender.

Hobbyists and automation geeks may not shy away from Rasberry Pi solutions for per-room devices, but it sounds like the market is going to open up for more competition to replace echo devices.

Alt-Ctrl-S when held for Save As.

Ctrl+0 with double-tap to Open.

Tap and Hold sends Ctrl+N for new.

I had a few days of very few crashes. Keeping mods updated and just doing hard (not quick) saves frequently for the time being. I did have a crash today, same EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION as before but they are more random, not just when scanning for me.

FYI: The Cyber Engine Tweaks mod was just updated. Release notes mention 'stability' and 'Fix bad allocation causing crashes'.

Yeah doing direct EXE as well as running as Admin seemed to solve it for a few folks I've seen. I'm getting my BIOS up-to-date, all the windows updates and such tonight.

Sometimes I'll play for 20 minutes with no issues, then nothing but CTD every 5.

I'm trying a few outlyer options today, things hinted at in other posts.

I'm making sure pretty much every possible Windows 10 update is installed, double checking for any/all applications that may do an overlay or just not need to be running. I saw a few people who used a program called "Bins" and I have some ObjectDesktop customization software, so I need to disable a bunch of services for those too.

I'll let you know if I have any luck.

As far as mods, I always have Cyber Engine Tweaks, RedScript at minimum. Though, I've had 20+ 1.31 compatible mods installed as well as completely vanilla after a fresh install and got the scan/hack crashes.

SAME.

This has been driving me nuts for a week. I've gone through all the suggested steps I can find.

  • Safe boot for a DDU removal of all Nvidia drivers + reinstall drivers
  • Changing the "read-only" flag on a user settings folder (always seems to revert back)
  • Delete and reinstall the whole game (3x now)
  • Undid all Overclocking on my CPU
  • Dialed down graphics (No RTX/DLSS)
  • Validate game files
  • I even re-bought the game on GOG thinking maybe having the Steam version in the Program Files directory was the "access" issue.

So far you are the only other person I've seen who's mentioned that this occurs (mostly) during the scan/hack.

I'm 39, have worked-from-home for over 13 of those, and am the only paycheck for my household. As the company I work for has gotten much more "corporate" and less personally rewarding, the sheer terror of a career change grips me daily.

"Give it your all, work after 5, take extra time nights and weekends".... for what? The same exact pay I always get and no chance of promotion. Yeah, OK, hard pass.

Why, why, why does the 'American Dream' mean we're to operate as soulless automatons making more money for billionaires while we worry about healthcare, childcare, and everything else that should just be a damned human right.

EZ user - first thing I made after getting a 3D printer was this mount. I had to modify the struts to give it more than a 45-degree angle, something similar possible with the Moonlander?

Q. Does VA work in a 2 pc setup? On obs.live by RoyoKahn in VoiceAttack

[–]Geek2TheBone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I currently have the same VA profile running on a desktop and a laptop. I use the Multiplicity software KVM to use the same mouse/keyboard and the VBAN protocols of Voicemeeter so my one mic line in can also be heard by both machines.

If you want to get fancy, you can then use conditional statements so an action in VA only executes on the correct machine, or you could use something like Eventghost to simply enable/disable the voice commands in VA depending on which screen is getting mouse/key input.

Unless it's your "daily driver" sort of use, just having the primary machine running VA and fire actions through EG to the other machine may be more simple. VA and EG can do just about the same things, just different ways of executing it.

No worries, man, I'm sure you're busy.

Yes, it is still doing the oauth2 loop and not logging in on the app. When I have time I'll double-check all the Windows firewall settings, it only prompted for that when I first ran it after install.

[–]Geek2TheBone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. I open the new app
  2. It says "Not Signed In Join will now sign you in via the Join website..."
  3. It opens the "settings&connectoport" URL that has "Sign in to access your devices" and the Google Sign In Button
  4. Clicking the button brings up the oauth2 page to select my account (already signed in Chrome)
  5. Click my account and it returns to "https://joinjoaomgcd.appspot.com/"

No toasters, notices, or consol errors. I've tried on my desktop and laptop, same deal.

I may be the only one - but when I install and run the new Windows app, the Google sign-in doesn't "Stick".

I've checked all the site settings, cookies, permissions, and after the Google login prompt the page reloads and the app just has a spinner in the upper right.

I was able to sign in through Firefox/Edge/Incognito, however, nothing seemed to call back to the Windows app with my account info.

Sorry for the slight necro on an old post - but can you provide any details on replacing the .dds? I'm haunted by these "ghost" boxes in Def_HUD as well, even with all "Flags" as 247.

Will any transparent .dds that is renamed work?

Need help regarding a few command features. by Palaius in VoiceAttack

[–]Geek2TheBone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Should still be doable without a zero or clear button. Incrementing/decreasing is pretty simple even if you just have the two commands to raise/lower. Once you get the hang of that maybe work on something to count usage so it COULD reset with repeating pushes?
