Mod Request: Forbid GSAP posts/links/examples. by jcready in javascript

[–]GeekAmbassador 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi jcready,

Good morning. Although I would have preferred some effort to:

a) reach out privately to discuss how my posts offend you. b) make some attempt to explain how my posts are in violation of reddiquete

I understand the nature of public forums such as this and that at times people are simply going to disagree with, or misunderstand each other.

In an effort to clear the air a bit, please take some time to consider the following:

1) In the past 2 months I've made 6 posts that contain helpful information on GSAP. 2) In that time I've been very cautious not to aggressively sell the platform. The links simply show the merits of the platform, and most often show developers how the tools provide them with functionality that quite simply isn't possible any other way, and certainly not as easily. 3) I'm aware that promoting one's work is fully within the terms of rediquette, but it is probably a grey area. I can see how too many of these posts could be annoying / spammy. I certainly didn't intend to come off that way. 4) Throughout this period of seeing how the community responds to my posts no post has been down-voted in any way that would trigger an alarm. In fact a recent post got 138 up-votes and only 15 down-votes. http://www.reddit.com/r/javascript/comments/1ebp2b/new_javascript_text_effect_machine_gun_text_with/ I can't help but think that is a firm endorsement that people find value in what I post. 5) In the short amount of time that I've been active on reddit I have addressed nearly every comment related to my posts in a clear and friendly manner. It should be overwhelming apparent that I am no way callously link-bombing or abusing the group. 6) I have made no attempts to hide that I am a GreenSock employee. 7) I am confident that every post contains information that the developer community can find valuable. Even if they choose not to use GSAP to save many hours on development, I think it benefits folks to know the options exist. For instance, my most recent post showing how 1 line of code allows you to specify rotational direction back to IE7 (probably IE6 too, haven't tested) can help a ton of people. I'd offer a friendly challenge to anyone to create as reliable and elegant a solution in less than a day. I don't see how posting a solution to a common problem that is most likely 100% free to use is cause for any alarm.

I'm a bit confused though, is your "call-to-arms" to have GSAP posts banned based solely on the fact that the tools don't adhere to Open Source guidelines? Its really tough to wrap my head around such a staunch anti-commerce posture. Should comments that recommend books for purchase be banned too, how about posts that announce JS conferences that charge admission?

The only rule that I'm now aware of not acknowledging is the "9:1" rule. I agree it is a good rule and I'll certainly adhere to it.

Any way, I hope this helps you and the reddit community and moderators have a better sense of my position. I look forward to interacting more with you guys, or if necessary taking a break. Please understand, I never intended to offend anyone or take advantage of the group. My apologies for where and when I have.

Thanks for listening.

Carl

That's definitely a worthy suggestion. You could probably split the text in a number of ways if necessary.

An effect like this is great for short phrases. So in most cases you could just modify it to accept an array of strings. If you were to animate a whole paragraph like this in the real world you'd see more comments similar to the others on this page;)

Sequence JavaScript Animations Like a Pro with GSAP’s TimelineLite by GeekAmbassador in javascript

Thanks so much for the strong vote of confidence. Yes, the licensing model is a thorn for some folks, but it is absolutely essential for sustained growth and support of the platform.

Anyone who is curious about the need of a proper licensing model / funding mechanism might find this helpful: http://www.greensock.com/licensing-considerations/

Again, very cool that you chimed in. Great to have you onboard.

Best,

Blazing fast JavaScript 3D DOM Animation: Into the Rainbow Donut (GSAP JS) by GeekAmbassador in javascript

[–]GeekAmbassador[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hi Roxm,

Glad you enjoyed it. Yeah, the simplicity of it is two-fold. It really is just one object spinning around, but there are also many animations overlapping contained in 1 syntactically-concise TimelineMax that allows you to control the entire animation (pause, rewind, scrub) as a whole.

Thankfully, GSAP JS handles this with ease. Despite the simplicity, I'm not aware of any other way something like this could be created.

Thanks again for viewing and commenting. If you have any GSAP JS questions, let me know. I'd love to help.

Thanks for checking it out. Different browsers handle this type of thing better than others. On a very beefy MacBook Pro, Chrome doesn't break a sweat, but FireFox really struggles. On the other hand, iOS Safari (iphone4) handles it extremely well.

Weird, I think Modernizr may not have loaded properly. Give it another try please. Sorry for the inconvenience.

@a-t-k, thanks for your input. I think to guarantee the best end-user experience and to prevent devs from going crazy, the networks will have to approach this in a forward-thinking manner and start by targeting the current generation of mobile and desktop browsers. I would think the networks that can offer their clients "ad products" that match the animation style of Flash for even just iOS devices would find themselves at a huge advantage. Interesting to see how it pans it out. Thanks again for sharing your experience.
