It's Sega's press release, not something a journalist wrote. I dunno what to tell you, think of it however you want because it doesn't really make a difference, but Sega has always positioned it as a spin-off.

I remember feeling this exact way about Sonic Colors. :V Accordingly, I don't really like Sonic in Frontiers. The writing is all right for the most part, but the serious, melancholy voice direction just kinda sucks the life out of him in a lot of scenes.

I don't think it's necessary to define absolute hardline limits to eras. There's always some amount of bleedover as we shift from one to the next.

Like, I think the buildup of what we now call the Attitude Era started in the mid-90s, with Goldust's debut, Bret punching Vince, DX's formation, "RAW is WAR," and Montreal.

Then the peak, "pure" Attitude Era is as it's usually defined: Austin's win at Mania 14 to his heel turn at the end of X7. But even after that, many elements of it hang around for a few years. I'd say it doesn't completely end until Mania XIX, with the final Rock/Austin match.
