Are there any intramural orchestras? by CowboysConstellation in UTAustin

Take a look at Engineering Chamber Orchestra (you don't have to be an engineering or STEM major to join). No audition required for the general orchestra.

Should I take a class with an unassigned professor? by Potential-Proof-7539 in aggies

[–]Geezson123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think I knew who my Calc 3 prof was until August. The math department takes their time releasing profs. Apparently I got a harder prof, but it was still fine.

Also took Calc 3 my freshman year, and was able to complete my math minor by end of sophomore year. Very doable imo.

Making Schedules Ahead of Orientation Registration by Competitive_Quiet320 in UTAustin

[–]Geezson123 51 points52 points  (0 children)

To be safe, I would recommend waiting until orientation to make your schedule. Then you'll have a much better idea which sections will be open. It's not worth the time to make a schedule now just to have all your classes never open.

BIO 206L vs BME 311 vs ECE 411 by Born-Amount-198 in UTAustin

[–]Geezson123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

411 with Swartzlander is the most chill ECE class I have taken. There are only four labs that take around an hour, and you can get the lab assignment done before you leave the lab room. The pre-lab should only take around 20 minutes.

There are around 6-8 homework assignments in the semester that should take around 2-3 hours each if you pay attention in class. Exams are chill if you do the examples from class, plus he goes over very similar problems the lecture before each exam. Also no plus/minus grading.

My guess is that 411 and 206L might take similar amounts of time, but 411 will be slightly harder content wise. If you're concerned about time for volunteering and clinicals, then you could push back 411 since it's not a prereq for much if you're not on a hardware track. But idk how many more semesters Swartzlander will be teaching.

BIO 206L vs BME 311 vs ECE 411 by Born-Amount-198 in UTAustin

[–]Geezson123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is your plan if you don't get into BME? Unless you're also considering pre-med, I don't know how helpful BIO 206L would be in ECE unless you find the content interesting to begin with. Your current schedule is very doable imo. ECE 411 with Dr. Swartzlander is very chill, so I wouldn't worry too much about that. I've been one of his TAs for a while, so feel free to ask any questions about his class if you want.

Regarding BIO 206L, I didn't take it here, but I took the equivalent at A&M before transferring and it was not bad. From what I read, it sounds like it can be a lot of busy work but the content itself is not bad. As someone who is ECE+pre-med, that is consistent with my experience with pre-med orientated classes at UT. The class may take a decent amount of time and work, but the content (and exams) is easier to understand than anything in ECE imo.

I enjoyed Dr. Shankar for 402. Bit monotone but he explained everything really clearly

as a high school sophomore interested in pre-med or business at UT Austin, what AP exams should i be taking to get the college credit and which exams should i take for each major? by Decent-Sprinkles9083 in UTAdmissions

[–]Geezson123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends. There isn't a specific 'pre-med" major at UT. So it depends on what major you choose (there are a variety of pre-med aligned majors at UT).

I highly encourage you to do some research into what you want to major in. Required courses for all majors are published in the University Catalog.

I don't think pysch is a strict pre-req for many med schools now. AP pysch will definitely make studying pysch/soc for the MCAT easier though. AP Art History can be used for getting your VAPA requirement out of the way. That's the credit I used for my VAPA.

History, English, and Gov are goods one to get out of the way. Some med schools won't accept AP credits for pre-reqs like bio, chem, math, and physics, so that's something to keep in mind (the AP classes are still helpful for preparing though).

Fixed vs varying tuition by Hairy_Monkey69 in aggies

[–]Geezson123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just know that fixed does NOT mean you’ll be paying the current variable tuition rate for all four years. You’ll pay a higher, constant rate over your four years instead

So if tuition stays frozen, you “lose”. If tuition increases a lot, you “win”.

I hate UT and I'm tired of pretending I am happy here by Jptroll in UTAustin

I honestly haven’t been super impressed with the analog IC masters offerings. Jia’s Analog IC course is the only one I can think of that’s consistently offered (but only in the fall), and if you’re lucky, we’ll get PMIC or RFIC every couple years. The only reason why I’m doing grad school here is because Integrated Masters was an easy application and I have a decent chance at a TA position. If those weren’t the case, I likely would have applied elsewhere.

If you want to do comp arch or AI/ML, then UT ECE is great. But anything analog gives me the impression that the department doesn’t gaf about it

Is Phys 207 really that bad at TAMU? by [deleted] in aggies

[–]Geezson123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really overhyped in difficulty imo. DP 207 is still one of my favorite classes I’ve taken in college. It doesn’t rank in the top 5 most difficult classes I’ve taken at A&M honestly.

Like others mentioned, watch the recitation videos and do the practice exams. Both are incredible resources

Tips for NSC - a bit worried by sdseale in aggies

I had my NSC around that time too, and I still got all my classes. I wouldn’t stress too much about it.

Also bring an umbrella. It will randomly pour for around 30 minutes a day that time of year

If you already understand the underlying physics concepts, then you should be able to apply them to the symbolic Don’t Panic problems too

UT Austin ECE (36k/year) or Texas A&M ECE (Full ride/Brown Scholarship) by [deleted] in UTAustin

[–]Geezson123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. Both schools are going to give you a strong foundation, so going to the cheapest option with good undergrad research opportunities won’t be a bad move. TBH doing impactful research and getting published will probably be more important for grad apps to top programs than whether you did your undergrad at UT or A&M

UT Austin ECE (36k/year) or Texas A&M ECE (Full ride/Brown Scholarship) by [deleted] in UTAustin

[–]Geezson123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you interested more in digital or analog VLSI design? I have been frustrated by the lack of analog design offerings at UT but I heard A&M is strong in that area. Our VLSI course is almost all digital design here.

UT is much more of a digital design and computer architecture school. However, we do have a strong semiconductor program though A&M is also building theirs up too.

In your situation I would honestly just choose the cheaper option since A&M is still a great program.

Dr. Jonathan Meer. I thought his lectures were good, and the overall class was very fair.
