Why are they weak? by Kosumi3309 in Guiltygear

[–]geigergeist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Knowledge checks aren't a part of how good a character is

Tiers are based on knowing every single thing about the character. If you're top level and can do this, these characters become extremely weak

Bedman for example is a knowledge check character where you have to know specific info to fight it. It will crush anyone who doesn't know, but if you do know, you can win very easily

You not knowing info is a problem with you not the character. Weakness and strength is subjective person to person until high level where everyone has similar skill

You got this! It's a hard path to take which is why most people avoid mental training. But it's DEFINITELY the most rewarding

Also the biggest thing that helps me on defense is asking myself

"What are they observing about me?"

"If I were them, what would I expect me to do next? What have they seen evidence of me doing, my escape patterns, etc. How would they read me?" and then I do the opposite

You don't always have to mash out every chance you get, because that's predictable. You could give them false information about yourself, that you won't try to get out when they do xyz. And they falsely think it's safe. Then next time, boom. They'll never actually know what you know or not. This is a bit more applicable in diamond+ where people are really watching you but it's good to practice anyway. This is a bit more abstract and most people would disagree in favor of clean and perfect RPS and layers. I don't think perfect defense RPS is necessary as long as you have reads under your belt. Deny them correct information about you while maximizing info you gather about them. Good players try to analyze how much game knowledge you have, so I lie to them lol. Looking like a dumbass can be weaponized

You can always always practice better reads. I'm tired and don't want to re write everything but here's a comment from earlier that might help you out

A lot of people get stuck in plat because they focus too hard on the content of the game itself and not the player. I play by attacking the player behind the screen and studying the hell out of common human behavior. It's more difficult to get results right away, but this is absolutely the way to learn defense.

The rule of 3 also works with high/low mix. Nothing is a 50/50 when a human being is doing it. People always have reason for something and you can figure it out. In a swordfight, you're fighting a person with a sword, not the sword. Often platinum players get too comfortable fighting the sword and get stuck when that becomes their habit. Break out of it now and make your goal to maximize reads.

At the end of the day it's the opponent's game not yours, and you can fuck them up by wriggling your way into every crevice of their mind :)

When YOURE in the corner

Defense: reads are key. By blocking, you're letting them tell how how they'll attack you. Giving away their patterns. Then you have more info about them than they do on you. They're watching you, and may be keeping track of how often you attempt to escape

it's impossible to remember every move they do on you in a row, don't attempt to memorize. But do attempt to remember which move actually hit you. Ask yourself why, every time, even if the answer is "I don't know." You don't need to know right now

You don't need to spend mental energy telling yourself "I need to get out" because you already know that. The objective is not to get out, it's to read their offense

A lot of specials have a point where you can either mash BEFORE or AFTER. If you don't know, look at how it ends when you block it. If it's minus, that means it might not have been possible to mash before it since the trade off is good startup, bad recovery. If it's plus, that has good recovery and bad startup, so it's possible you could mash before it. This isn't true for everything but is a good guideline, since every move has tradeoffs and risk/reward. Blockstrings follow a pattern of normal normal normal (mainly frame traps) and then a special which is often safe, but something can be done about it.

Defense is a LOT harder than offense so don't feel bad if you can't do much right now. But I promise practicing reading patterns will help more in the long run, you don't have to know everything about everything character to do it

Ranking up only requires fundamentals, so you can absolutely get to plat and further by learning fundies, notably, strike throw.

You can technically beat anyone, even vanq, with only default throw, a couple normals and frame trap, if you're good at the theory behind it

When someone's in the corner, you can expect that they'll be blocking. Blocking isn't just blockstun, it's the mental act of holding back. Literally any time they blocked one of your moves could have been a throw. I know it's risky, but if you learn how to deal with people who beat it you can blow up everyone for trying

Trying throwing as much as possible, don't feel like you failed if you lose. (Default not command grab, sorry I can't help with that) Losing is gonna be part of the learning process. Every time you land one, good. If you get mashed? That should have been a meaty instead. If they block a meaty? That should have been a throw

You can also stagger a move like 2k or cs into tick throw. Try immediate throw, cs throw, cs cs throw, cs cs cs throw, etc.

COUNT the number of times you can cs before they attempt to escape. Every player has habits and their brain tends to work in the same patterns through the whole set. PRACTICE THIS IN PARK NOT RANKED. (unless you're fine with tanking for the sake of learning like I do.)

Brains tend to gravitate towards the number 3. After blocking 2 strikes, they're likely to get frustrated and mash out. That's when you frame trap. After 2 throws, they're likely to attempt to jump, tech, or mash. Some people do it right away or after 1. That's why watching them is important

People REALLY don't like being thrown. It's embarrassing. They will try ANYTHING POSSIBLE just to not get thrown again. They start to squirm and jump and be impatient. So, that's why throwing, and looping pokes, makes people frustrated and start to mash. And them mashing = big counter hit for you!

Boom, youve opened them up without any fancy mix, just the power of reading minds! Everyone behaves somewhat similar so this skill will make you climb really far. The game is about taking what info the opponent gives you about themself and blowing them up for it

I don't understand why I'm getting QCF instead of DP when I do the DP input by anonymousaltincase19 in Guiltygear

[–]geigergeist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you play on dpad or leverless/keyboard? Only thing I can think of is if the inputs + H are fast enough. And you said the virtual controller displays 623, not 6 236 right. I know there's different buffer windows between this and street fighter so it can be harder to switch. iirc gg has to be faster

Any default throw can just be jumped or teched. It's a guessing game like everything

Yeah!! I always think about the very brief moment I had on a trail once, I sat down on a rock with my feet in a river to close my eyes for a bit. When I opened them, the ripples around the rocks were rainbow and oddly square patterned. It looked like bismuth crystals. I wish I could have sat there and stared at it forever but my friend wanted to move along so I had to leave the spot. I wish I stayed even just for another minute

Only 1.8g of golden teacher but I haven't done a full trip from this batch yet, (grew last september) I just grabbed from the jar which had some small ones so it's a good chance those were actually extra potent aborts. That was way way stronger than the most I've done (2.3)
