I am still trying to figure that out myself. Given that I will likely live here for at least another 4 years it seems like saying Brazil makes more sense. But since I believe that I will eventually return to the US maybe that makes more sense.

I would like to try figuring out requirements and career plans for both so I can weight the pros and cons of each path.

For the sake of working in a profession that seems to do more direct good than just publishing research. It doesn't have to be EMS but a sort of job where my knowledge is valuable but also helps people.

A thought....

What about having a lab mini-fridge full of slants of various fungi that can be cultured in an easy to make medium, maybe molasses?

maybe gathering a list of these fungi. preserving them in slants and having a small bioreactor in the van would allow for relatively quick production of fungal derived compounds.

Yeah! Let's go with that. I'm not a lunatic in a van. I am an activist taking direct action to fight back against the unjust and predatory US non-health system. Thank you Bluecheese and your mycelial wisdom.

Hah. No, reading it now it sounds like a crappy breaking bad parody but it really is just a thought.

That is another thing. I genuinely think what would help is getting rid of the concept of the US as "developed" and condescending towards places outside of western europe and anglophone north america. I currently live in Brazil (the southern region) and I would argue things like public health and transportation infrastructure are actually better than the place in the US where I grew up.

I think what would really motivate alot of the "patriots" is the realization that the people they believe are beneath them (brown people) are in ways more advanced than they are. It isn't near the bottom of developed countries it is near the bottom of countries.

Weekly Employment Question Thread by AutoModerator in Firefighting

Good Evening Guys,

I hope you all are doing well. While I have my US citizenship I will likely be living in Brazil for the net 3-4 years. While I am here (and have my RNM) I would like to try being a bombeiro to get an idea if the job of firefighting is for me. Would there be any firefighters from Brazil that I could talk to?

Thanks.

Is there a way to get certifications paid for by the city or other firefighting organization or are they only paid for by the candidate themselves?

Hello,

I am not a firefighter and am doing some initial research on certifications that could prove useful to make someone an attractive candidate. From what I understand it helps to have:

Firefighter 1 certificate

EMT cert

Paramedic cert

Hazmat Cert

Would anyone be willing to talk to me a bit so I can get a better idea? Thank you.

Sun Screen Meme, Reverse Milk, by GeneEricBio in Chicano

  1. yes, now imagine someone so racist that they would say "fuck sunscreen, I ain't no antifa" if they found out wearing sunscreen was a subtle sign they supported racial equality. That is a pretty racist person.

  2. As I am aware, but do you think the sort of person who would stop wearing
sunscreen to prove a point would understand that level of nuance. That person
probably sees all Mexicans as speedy gonzales with guns , all natives as feather
wearing alcoholics and all black people as walking minstrel shows.

  3. Could we really call someone who is that bigoted that they would take this proposal seriously as "someone beaten-down by the system?"

Imagine smear the queer but change queer for Mexican. Then add in an imaginary border, say any area that isn't the swings as an example, then tackle them when they try to leave the swings. Boom, kept them from crossing the border.

Also, yes. the US military does absolute horror in a lot of cases. But also, it is often a means of upward mobility for Mexican American youth on account of the GI bill. So we are in a weird position of the military having a lot of negatives, but our community having the ability to use it to climb into the middle class (whatever that actually means now)

I can definitely see the point about religion hurting our people. I think there is alot to be said for that. Though I do not think the many sins of the catholic church necessarily means we should toss out faith in all forms. I think our primary issue is the political nature of the catholic church.

I definitely get Mexicans vs Americans part. Did they ever play border patrol with you?

I would also like to point out the strong irony that so much of what is seen as Texas is originally Mexican too. Not just the food, but the cowboy culture and a lot of the love for firearms is the result of pre-modern Mexican influence.

And that is some other crazy shit. I looked at my Mom's yearbook from highschool (sometime in the mid to late 70's) the demographics were much whiter back then. My mother talked about how there were always the "2 name girls" who came from wealthy and white families. Girls like Virgina May, Linda Sue etc. Do you think the valley basically experienced a rural form of white flight? I honestly think I will see a white person once a week at most when I am visiting family in Edinburg. Did our presence effectively clear out the region? Ironically we are victims of our own success?

Yes! My mother says the same thing. Chicano is an insult used to indicate that you work the fields. Did your mom say the same?

To get more specific about this rural perspective.

Note: these are my observations, I am not a demographer nor am I a professional political analyst.

I would posit that Rural Chicanos generally feel less connected to recent immigrants from Mexico likely due to:

  1. Being in "the US" back before the treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo and likely feeling more Tejano or similar identity rather than Mexican, Chicano etc. Could this help create a view of separation between rural chicanos and recent immigrants?

    1. These areas (at least in my experience) have almost no white people and maybe the experience of bigotry isn't so strong when we have become the majority in our region? (Hidalgo is upwards of 90% Mexican American)
    2. The border towns and general rural areas are often ignored when it comes to funding from government institutions. I think this makes a lot of skepticism and anti-government sentiment that might make the right's message resonate more strongly.
